Eurogamer re-reviews Resistance

The overall disappointment that comes from playing Resistance is troubling. For years, Insomniac has carved itself an impressive reputation, and had a golden opportunity to throw its creativity at a genre which has been stuck in its ways for far too long. That it merely aped almost all of the things wrong with this creatively moribund genre is alarming. That's not to say that it's a bad game at all, because in most senses Resistance bears a solid resemblance to a lot of very successful shooters of the last few years. But to simply come up with a game on a new platform that completely stands still feels like a huge disappointment from a studio that's more than capable of doing thing differently to everyone else. Put bluntly, the combat and AI is merely average, the visuals don't really wow, and the much-vaunted weaponry makes little difference to how it plays. To say we're underwhelmed is the understatement of the year.

6/10. It scored a notch lower than it did before!

Why is Resistance met with a harsher reception in Europe than in North America? Is it reviewers being overly critical or is it because of some cultural differences that I'm not seeing?

It has more to do with the hype having cooled and the game being seen for what it really is.. not forgetting that EG are now carving out a very respected name for themselves in terms of calling a spade a spade.. and not falling over to play the PR-hype game.

It solves the frustration of having to be genuinely good at the game, but means the game - like most shooters these days - lacks tension almost throughout.

... did we play the same game?

Wasn't this just locked? Unlocked for legendary thread?

It was locked because it had already been posted. It was unlocked because it turned out it hadn't been posted in its own thread before. If "same game reviewed by different person gets a score that's different by one point" makes for a 'legendary thread' in your book then you really need to get out more.

Un****ing believable... 6/10... Lower than they scored it before, and now they have Online to play with this time as well... :lol How retarded is that? Seriously? Are they playing the same game? Did Insomniac gimp it? JStevenson needs to investigate...

My post p/day has been diminishing. I'd say i am getting out more and since I have school, I'd say I get out plenty.

If motorstorm gets a higher score than resistance, something is really odd. Not that motorstorm gameplay is worse (can't really compare them, but if I had to I'd say I've had equally the same amount of fun with both), it's just that Resistance is so much more polished and thought out.

Is that a go ahead to start another one of those "FFXIII exclusivity" thread? Cause I want my meltdown a fixin this weekend.

I just found it funny how Motorstorm is generally well-liked and Resistance is getting 7-and-below scores in EU publications, while the situation is the opposite in US media. Is it some kind of rooting for the local guys, or do our tastes really differ that much?

Did they try it online? What did COD3 get BTW?

7/10.

Why did Halo 2 sell les than 3 times as much units in Europe than it did in NA?

"And while we're on this, why is the radio communication so sophisticated? In 2007 I can't even use my mobile phone on the underground trains, so how, exactly, is Hale able to get updates when he's deep underground?"

I generally like eurogamer's reviews, but this is just sad...

I can't comment on the single player portion of the review, since I haven't really played much of that portion of the game, but I completely disagree with much of they said about the online portion.

Upon entering the online menu for the first time, the update patch takes fully 15 minutes to download and apply itself
It took me around 3 minutes per update, but even if it did take that long, it is a petty complaint because the updates aren't frequent enough to be an annoyance.

promise of 40-player online relies on extensive waiting around and other players' patience.
I'm not really sure what they are referring to here, Resistance has one of the best matchmaking systems of any game I've seen, rivaling Halo 2's. If I select a ranked game mode, I'll be in a match in 30 seconds.

No... you just worry about your Wii, and why the PSP get's Oblivion but the Wii doesn't... :P

I'm tired of Oblivion tbh. I wanna start bitching about Square's Wii support now.

Are they serious? Wtf. Isnt Resistance set in the near future or something? It's possible that somebody incorporated tiny transmitters into each celphone by forgoing cell towers entirely.

A clue Eurogamer: The PS3 hasn't released in Europe yet. Might be causing the problem regarding lack of opponents..

Holy.... 6!? Wow.... just lost all faith in Eurogamer reviews. I have my problems with the game myself but I'd say it's a solid 8 at least!

What was the old score?

What´s up?

Read it again.

The gameplay, the storytelling, the music, the whole presentation feels like Call of Duty...only with aliens.

But the story itself, is not World War II with aliens. It's another timeline, a different history. There never was a World War II in this game.

Le American Gajin!

You know what's amazing is that Killzone is made from Europe, and Halo originated from America.

Coincidence?

Well that was what I was trying to point out. :p Killzone does have a very europen feel though with british accent on most character and the enemies + the more drab nature and look for the game.

Thats probably it. And would explain everything if Motorstorm were to get a higher review (though sometimes Motorstorm feels very american made).
It's kinda like Gundam in America reviews vs Japan reviews. :lol

The problem is that Radio waves are a million miles away from the microwave frequencies that mobile phones use. Lower frequency waves can penetrate easier through the ground and their use dates back to World War 1.

Who cares, you're fighting giant enemy crabs for french crepes sake!

Score one for the evil guys(i.e. Sony, sony fanboys) for this tiny kerfluffle. EG sucks ass for nitpikcing.

If they feel it's a competent but vanilla FPS, and feel the genre is getting stale (it totally is) and this does nothing inventive with it, why should they feel compelled to give it a really good score?

So explain how it went from a 7/10 (US import) to a 6/10 (EU) when there isn't any differences between the 2 and the review doesn't seem to highlight any at all.

It's just plain weird.

different reviewers?

shocking i know.

Everyone keeps saying "they", but let's not forget that each review is written by one individual. These two reviews may well have been written by two different people. And those two people might, shock horror, not have exactly the same taste.

edit: the first review is by Tom Bramwell and this newer one is by Kristan Reed

Did the same person write both reviews?
