5th Cell - Scribblenauts would “definitely work on other platforms”

Starlet developer 5th Cell has never thought of puzzler Scribblenauts as a DS exclusive, technical director Marius Fahlbusch has told VG247, and has confessed that the puzzler could migrate between platforms.

“The concept would definitely work on other platforms as well and we’ve seen gamers from very different backgrounds pick it up and enjoy it equally,” said Fahlbusch.

He added: “We’ve seen both kinds of gamers instantly taking to the game, the casual gamer that played a few games before as well as hardcore ones that play nothing but the latest titles on PS3 and X360.“But we never limited ourselves to the DS as platform in our heads and we’ll see what the future holds.

”Scribblenauts, a puzzle game in which gamers type in the names of objects to make them appear for play, was the shock story of E3 this year, taking away the official Best Original Game award.
Also VG247 has a small interview with them:
VG247: You must be pleased with the E3 reaction - did you expect it?
Marius Fahlbusch: We knew we had something special with Scribblenauts, but to be up there with all the other great titles is a true honor.

Being the first handheld title to win Best of E3 is just amazing. Is there any chance of this ever coming to other platforms?
It would work well on PC, for example. Unfortunately, I cannot comment on it at this point. But the concept would definitely work on other platforms as well and we’ve seen gamers from very different backgrounds pick it up and enjoy it equally.

Do you find people are disappointed when they input a word and nothing happens? Fortunately, that rarely happens once people understand that they cannot use proper names, copy-righted or vulgar words, but even if it does happen, the dictionary is just so vast, chances are there is a very similar item to what you’re looking for.

Does the game have a “plot” as such?
We didn’t feel a story would fit this kind of game, but it does have a kitchen sink. And a hover board.Do you feel a little like the little guy standing up for creativity in an industry dominated by “blockbusters”?5TH Cell has always tried to fill a gap, to provide experiences that gamers couldn’t get anywhere else, so Scribblenauts just continues what Drawn to Life and Lock’s Quest have started. We’re really just focused on making awesome games.

Are you concerned that you may cut yourself away from the “core” consumer by being restricted to DS?
We’ve seen both kinds of gamers instantly taking to the game, the casual gamer that played a few games before as well as hardcore ones that play nothing but the latest titles on PS3 and X360. But we never limited ourselves to the DS as platform in our heads and we’ll see what the future holds.

How big’s your team?
Are you able to keep costs down by concentrating on DS as a platform? We are currently in the thirties in terms of headcount, consisting of two teams at the moment. So there were around 15 - 20 people involved in the development of Scribblenauts. While cost efficiencies are always important, especially as an independent developer, we felt the DS was just the perfect platform for this game.

Have you got “sweary” stuff in there?
We did not include any vulgar items, so that first thing we know everyone wants to write in there… I am sorry! But who needs vulgarity if you can ride three panda bears on a unicycle while wearing a snorkel. There are just so many surprises in the game.

Finally, can you see the idea being replicated by other developers?
Every title out there is also in inspiration to all developers in some way, so why wouldn’t certain concepts of Scribblenauts flow into other future titles? But it will be interesting to see if and what kind of influence it could have.

It confuses me why Nintendo hasn't pounced on 5th Cell.

HD version on PSN/XBLA plz.

Maybe with some kind of multiplayer. Co-op through the levels, but also versus battles.

YES!

A downloadable version on the 360 would be AMAZING. And hey, maybe they could make it use the chatpad for easier typing of words.

I cant see why Scribblenauts can't work on other platforms but the style of the game works so well with the DS, it just seems like a perfect fit.

Because today's Nintendo probably doesn't even know who 5th Cell are or what Scribblenauts is.

Which is sad, as I'd love to see a developer like 5th Cell have the financial backing of a company like Nintendo, and I think concepts like Drawn to Life and Scribblenauts are right up Nintendo's ally of creating original titles that appeal to everyone.

Scribblenauts just seems like something Nintendo would adore having their name on.

Half of the appeal for this game comes from being able to take it anywhere and play a couple stages whenever you have a few minutes. IMO anyway.

I'd definitely welcome a XBL/PSN release with graphical updates and DLC/user created content though. That'd be awesome.

What the fuck is going on in your avatar?
Character's hips are being rotated 360 degrees and penetrating the legs, but the head has been programmed to always look at you upwards irrespective of the hips orientation.

Right... Heaven forbid them.

Seriously, that is good to hear for those who don't own a DS, though I know I wouldn't be able to wait if there was a version already out on a console I didn't own

MS guys have already said they love this.

Gonna get on DS but I would think it would be great to show off the speech recognition as a launch Natal game, would really have that wow punch they are looking for too.

Who cares about Natal, just make it work with the 360 and PS3 chat pads.

5th Cell's previous game, Drawn to Life, is a million seller. Of course Nintendo has heard of them. What is that supposed to mean anyway?

What kind of stupid question is that?

Wii is the logical next step.
Yeah, because typing is so fun on the Wii...

After the DS version I want one on PC so a bunch of mods can be made.

So, has the backlash started yet?

I think a PC is the most obvious choice. It would be a cheap and easy port, and the keyboard would make the best input device. Also..there would be a much easier way to update the "dictionary" through online updates.

It would be cool if this was a next-gen game..but I think it's just too difficult to model so many objects in 3-D. It would have to remain a 2-D platformer.

It has keyboard suport. If the DS version sells well, Its hard for me to imagine any of the big three wouldn't let them allow keyboards as an alternate input.
That said, if you are using an anaolgue stick on the other two consoles, adding a pointer to said stick would be better than not.

Pointer only typing however, does suck

IPhone version for the non-gamers would be nice I guess

While technically possible, it would be horrendous typing words using the analogue sticks. I hate just entering 25 characters to redeem arcade points.

As has been said, PC and iPhone seem like the obvious choices.

Wouldn't they have to redraw every single item, or is the game pseudo 2D?

I don't own a 360 but I'm not waiting around for the Halo game to come to the pc.

If you want Scribblenauts badly enough then buy a DS.

As said in this thread, iPhone is the best place. It already has the built in text screen, all you have to do is port over the art and levels since the game already controls 100% with the touch screen on DS. Perfect fit.

it's amazing enough that i'm willing to double/triple/quadruple dip on it.

It makes complete sense for 5th Cell to diversify.
