With summer holidays in full swing Nintendo follow up the launch of the Wii MotionPlus controller 7 weeks ago with the first Nintendo title to take advantage of this new accessory.

It will come as no surprise that ‘Wii Sports Resort’ is a resounding No1 this week and this is the fourth biggest week 1 for a Wii title, behind ‘Wii Fit’ (week 17, 2008), ‘Mario Kart Wii’ (week 15, 2008) and ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympics’ (week 49, 2007). Note that the original ‘Wii Sports’ was only released with the Wii console and as such has never been tracked as a software item. However, interestingly enough, week 1 sales of the Wii (week 49, 2006) were almost identical to week 1 sales of ‘Wii Sports Resort’. EA’s ‘Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince’ has a solid fourth week on chart, sales down just 4% over last week but the title drops to No2. EA remain at No3 with an equally solid fourth week for ‘Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10’ (EA’s second Wii MotionPlus-enabled title) with sales down just 3% over last week.

Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit’ remains at No4 (+3%) and Activision-Blizzard’s ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ (-13%) drops 3 places to No5. EA drop 1 place to No6 with ‘Fight Night Round 4’ (-24%), Ubisoft also drop a position to No7 with ‘Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood’ (-19%), as does EA’s ‘The Sims 3’ at No8 (-11%). Activision Blizzard and EA are non-movers at No’s 9 & 10 with ‘Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare’ (-13%) and ‘EA Sports Active’ (+8%). Note that the other Wii MotionPlus-enabled titles are also within the Top 40 – Sega’s ‘Virtua Tennis 2009’ is at No13 (-40%) and EA’s ‘Grand Slam Tennis’ is at No25 (-19%), actually the first MotionPlus product to market having been launched 7 weeks ago alongside the solus Wii MotionPlus controller.

Hey dabra, this is just being picky and all, but can you fix it so the NDS links go to the DS rankings instead of the PS2 rankings. All the other ones seem to work fine.

THANKS.

I have a question regarding the Dutch chart: what is the last day counted? I was under the impression that it tracked sales up to the previous Thursday but I am no longer sure... We often see new games not make the top because of this.

Seeing as WSR is listed as 1st and it only came out on Friday (I believe), this makes me wonder if they changed anything or if I was simply always wrong...

whoa, Monster Hunter Unite is doing great. the hell? the moment it became £25 at amazon (it launched at less than £20), the moment it charted. that doesn't make sense.

maybe there were offers in store that i don't know about.

Meh, WSR sales are a little disappointing. I expected it to have the highest weekly sales of a Wii game thus far.

It's half the price of Wii Fit, and was marketed to hell and back compared to Mario Kart. Mario & Sonic doesn't count, as its highest week was at Christmas.

Wii Sports Resort has been out 3 days in the UK, I'm sure next week's numbers will be a fairer reflection of sales.....

So had Mario Kart and Wii Fit and they still both outsold it.

I sometimes think I'm the only one that reads the Chart Track write-up.

Granted that it sold less than those games, but I don't see what the big deal is. The game sold well. It will probably have a bigger week next week.

We can only measure the game against Nintendo's internal expectations, and we have no idea what those are.

Does it really matter when it's virtually guaranteed to have long legs?

arent those two titles like some of the highest selling games this generation

I think it's a result of being released in what seems to be the slowest sales period of the year.

Of course it's a high-profile title with a significant advertising campaign, but I think M&S, Mario Kart, and Wii Fit were launched into more favourable retail environments.

Tiger Woods and Grand Slam could climb even more if people are looking for a second Wii Motion Plus. If they price these puppies right for the holiday season they could turn into their own little version of Wii Play.

Its being featured on those "summer of PSP" ads they're running on TV atm.

Only counting consoles, they are easily the highest selling titles, with WiiFit #1 and MK Wii #2. Of course if Wii Play counts, bump both of those numbers down by 1.

Yes, but neither of those games was released mid-summer where nothing sells that much. Easter however is like a mini-Xmas in relation to game sales.

That and piracy may have increased to such a level it now makes a difference in the charts.

Yup - WSR will shoot up in sales next week as the families realize it is out. There is stock for it to do so too. Not of the extra accessories though - as I suspected Nintendo would rather you pick one up packaged into another game...

The fact that it's opening weekend was less than other games is more due to the time of year as people have suggested. MCV retail mag for this week. direct link isn't working so I got the pdf. The last page shows you that games being released now are either activity based, kids based or sent to die...

Also All 3 of the Wiis top opening weekend games ARE STILL IN THE WII TOP 10...

Wow at Wii software, 6 out of 10. Good to see WSR at #1, tiger woods and layton up too.
And wow at CoD4, did it ever drop out of the top 30? Not that I'm complaining...

and whoa at Mario kart DS and NSMB, they will never die.

I still don't have either one, i really need to buy them

Pretty good showing for all the consoles.
The Wii can have really good software sales when big budget games come out on it. WSR, EA Sports Active are two good examples. It's a shame no other companies decided to put more games with Motion +, and we're not having anything worthwhile for quite a while now.
The 360 and PS3 can have great software sales with the right games.

New UK charts:

Nintendo's Wii Sports Resort Stays Relaxed at No1

Nintendo’s ‘Wii Sports Resort’ still rests comfortably at No1 this week with an increase of 6% in sales.

Nintendo also claim the No2 spot thanks to the brilliant stamina of ‘Wii Fit’ jumping up from No4. The next three places are held by EA with ‘Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10’ staying on par at No3, ‘Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince’ moving down to No4 and ‘Fight Night Round 4’ bouncing back to No5. Activision-Blizzard’s ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ drops a place to No6 and EA’s ‘The Sims 3’ regains No7. THQ fight their way back into the Top 10 thanks to ‘UFC 2009: Undisputed’ at No8 and EA’s fifth title in the Top 10 comes in the form ‘EA Sports Active’ at No9. Ubisoft’s ‘Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood’ rounds off the Top 10 and the only new release to make it into the Top 40 this week is film tie-in ‘G-Force’ featuring Disney’s secret agent guineapigs sneaking in at No26.
