My NES Guide: I filtered out the crap in the NES library.

I've noticed recently, people have been asking questions regarding the good games in the NES library. Well, wonder no more. I've taken the liberty of compiling a list of every NES game released in North America and given each game a ranking. They organized by genre and are ranked on their quality - 'BEST', 'Good', 'Worth Playing', and 'AVOID'. Can't say I find any highly disputable verdicts on the games, but I'm confused with some of your puzzle genre assignments...

BBCC and Milon's are definitely platformers. Mendel Palace I guess I'd classify as an arcade action title... while something like Solomon's Key I'd definitely classify as either platform or arcade.

Y'ever play any of these? BBCC and Solomon's Key are puzzle games, at least.

Come on, of course I have ~

Both of those titles feature an avatar that has to manipulate between different platforms and faces threats to goal completion by on screen things which can't be touched; in puzzle games the only threat to completion or game continuation you face is your own mistakes or lack of ability in utilizing what the gameplay offers as the sole way to interact with the game (ie. every individual item that you can interact with is, in and of itself, a non-threat; it's up to the player to keep them from becoming threats). The only way I'd classify either as puzzle games is if they removed all presence of physical enemies.

I'd even consider Chip's Challenge, as much of a sokoban nightmare that game is, as more of an action/overhead "platform" game than a Puzzle Game.

Despite being a religious game, I remember Exodus kicking ass. I'm probably wrong though since I was about 6 when I last played it.

Wait, why is Zelda 2 an adventure game if Battle of Olympus is an RPG? I know the ARPG debate is a touchy subject, but these two are practically the same in every way. They need to be in the same category, I'd actually suggest switching all ARPGs (Crystalis, Wollow, etc) to the adventure category or maybe doing a seperate ARPG section and throwing stuff like Zelda 1-2, Faxanadu & Castlevania 2 over there.

Also, how are Manaic Mansion or Uninvited RPGs? They're totally adventure games. And wasn't Destiny of An Emperor a straight up RPG rather than a strategy game?

Oh and finally where's Gargoyle's Quest 2? :(

When I was seven, I really enjoyed Renegade. I was one of the first NES games I played. I guess I didn't know better at the time.

Whoa King's Quest V came out for the NES? Why did you list it under RPG?

Though the entire game is intact, the NES's limited color palatte kind of kills the experience... It's definitely worth playing on a PC instead. It's an admirable translation, and it couldn't really be much better, but it's still not nearly as good.

I actually ended up playing the NES version before I played a PC version (I was between upgrades) and the difference is night & day.

... The 3 Kemco Text-Adventures(Déjà vu, Uninvited, Immortal) ...

Wait, what about Shadowgate? That was the first one of these and, in my opinion, the second best (behind Uninvited). I've never played Immortal either .. what is that? I can only find an EA game called "The Immortal" when I search for it - there is no listed Kemco game called "immortal".

Edit: And also, I don't really consider those games "RPGs", because they really aren't. They're certainly much closer to puzzle games (in fact, you might consider them the precursor to the CD-ROM puzzler games like Myst and the 7th Guest).

I'm sure he just got confused... Shadowgate is Kemco, The Immortal is EA. Both are worthwhile, though the Genesis version would be the one to go for with The Immortal.

Castelian and Krazy Kreatures shouldn't be avoided.
And wasn't AD&D Dragonstrike more of a top down shooter? Heroes of the Lance is apparently pretty decent if you get the control scheme, but Hillsfar is really, really terrible.

Baron Aloha

A Shining Example
Um... A Nightmare on Elm Street is actually pretty damn good. I don't know why its on your "avoid" list. At the very least it's "worth playing".

1. It's one of the few 4-player simultaneous games on the NES.
2. The dream powers (acrobat, wizard, & martial artist) are fun.
3. Just about every notable location from the movies is represented in the game in some form or another.
4. It controls well.
5. The music is decent for the NES (I can actually remember some of the music which is more than I can say for most other NES games).
6. The boss fights were good (albeit pretty similar).

The only thing really "bad" about the game is that the enemies consist of various insects and creepy crawlies and stuff like that but honestly... you have to fight something while going through the levels. I doubt anything other than Freddy would have worked well in the context of the game but they saved him for boss fights.

Yes, its a movie game. Yes, it was made by LJN (the makers of such bad NES movie games such as Friday the 13th, and Back to the Future). But don't be so quick to write it off for those reasons. It's probably the only good game LJN ever made.

Renegade was a fun little game, much better than Double Dragon 3, that's for sure. The part where you ride the motorcycle and kick other guys off is hilarious, if nothing else. Friday the 13th, if you give it time, can actually be an interesting one. The random popups of Jason were done well. I think the design principles they established in that game would be just awesome if reworked in 3D today on something like the HL2 or Thief 3 engine. Ikari Warriors is actually a classic and should be in anybody's NES collection. Certainly one of the most challenging shooters, yeah, it's too long and the ending sucks, but action/shooter fans don't usually care. And where is Jackal? One of Konami's all time greats. Rush N Attack certainly belongs in the best category. Konami used to do such awesome arcade translations on the NES. Commando and Gunsmoke also belong in the good or best categories. And the NES Rampage I didn't care for at all....blah, the C-64 actually had a more true to the arcade version than that. I think the Master System did as well. I didn't like Super Spy Hunter much, not compared to the original. In all the Spy Hunter renditions/sequals that have come out since the classic orignal, they've all failed to capture the essence. The NES translation of the original was very good though.

I agree that Nightmare on Elm Street for NES is good. I can't think of very many 4-player simultaneous platformers like it!

Looking this over, there are a lot of quality titles on the AVOID Lists!

DON'T AVOID: Castelian, Athena, City Connection, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Gilligan’s Island, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Robocop, Simpsons: Bart VS The World, The Three Stooges, Shinobi, Dick Tracy, Bad Dudes, Low G Man, The Punisher, Karate Champ, Urban Champion, Yoshi, Loopz, Krazy Kreatures, Baby Boomer, Chiller, Winter Games, Toobin’

ugh, so much here I disagree with >_<

I'll just go through a few of the avoids,

City Connection - this is action arcade

Godzilla 2 - its a strategy game, not an action game

Friday the 13th - this is an adventure game and its not crap, alot of people don't know how to dodge Jason's attacks cause they don't have the manual, then they end thinking this game is crap cause they get killed quickly by Jason, there's also alot of strategy involved in the gameplay between managing the counselers and keeping them and the kids alive

Gilligan’s Island - this is an adventure game and its not crap

The Three Stooges - this isn't great but it isn't crap either

Renegade - this is one of the best beatemups on the system

The Punisher - this isn't crap

Conflict - this isn't crap

Al Unser Jr.’s Turbo Racing - this is hardly crap, its one of the best racers on the system, you just have to learn to manage your turbo and gas, its also one of the few racers where it actually takes some skill to pass the CPU racers

No kidding! This is one of the most underrated games ever, imo! It's not super-great, but it is universally reviled for no good reason. I actually prefer it to The Goonies 2, which it strongly resembles. It's pretty tense at times, looking for Jason in a cabin & then having him pop up in front of you. The one frustrating thing about it are the mazes...

Fighting Jason and his Mom's head is great! It's almost like Punch-Out! :)

I liked Friday the 13th and Skate or Die.

Aside from SMB/Duck Hunt, some of my early favorite NES games were The Karate Kid, Blades of Steel, and The Adventures of Bayou Billy.

There were plenty of others, but I think these titles aren't generally thought of very well.

Oh yeah, as someone else already mentioned, Toobin' was good, too.

Yeah, forgot to mention that one. The NES certainly wasn't a racing powerhouse, but Turbo Racing was a decent way to pass the time.

Oh, and Capcom's Trojan deserves a mention on there somewhere. And I didn't really care for the "reimagining" of Gyruss on the NES.

Never played the NES version of the The Three Stooges, but I loved the C-64 version to death. So if they were similar, then it shouldn't be on the avoid list.

Also forgot to add that a dodgeball game can't be the best volleyball game, no matter what. Super Spike and Kings of the Beach are too damn good to not be listed in the best category.

Here's an avatar I made.

PM me if you like the NES game concept. I have a couple of others I managed to grab from videos.

All right, thanks for the good suggestions guys! I had NO idea Dragonstrike was a shooter. I assumed they were all like the first one(Heroes of the Lance). Live and learn.

I moved some of the games around. Super Dodge Ball is really more of an action title, I stuck Battle of Olympus and King's Quest V under Adventure, and I moved the 3 Kemco Advetures to (Duh.) Adventure.

As for Bases Loaded, that was a tough call. Almost all the baseball games for the NES were so great, it simply got lost in the shuffle. Same thing happened with the Renegade games, pretty much all the beat-em-ups for NES are good(Excpet Bad Street Brawler. Blecch.)

Are there any titles you feel I've given too much credit?

Especially Athena. What a frustrating game, with poor documentation and sloppy play control.

If you're into Shooters, check out Gun-Nac and Zanac. Those are two VERY good vertical shooters that I never hear anybody talk about.

I actually like Athena somewhat. If it only had a controllable jump, it'd be an average Action Adventure.

Ultima Exodus is one of the worst RPG's I have ever played (and I played them all back then) and is over rated on your list. I would recommend "Ultima:Quest for the Avatar" .. but even that would be a mild recommedation.

I still feel Zelda 2 is an average game (hides from all the sharp objects). But, since it IS a zelda game ... you should probably play it anyways. So it is tough on where to place it.

That is what makes Athena even more frustrating ... its a game that COULD'VE been good. It had interesting character design and some exploration aspects with RPG elements thrown in .... yet its control ruined all of that.

Robocop
I like this a lot, actually. It's one of the more realistic looking NES games, and the deliberate pacing to it makes it play different than most games of its type.

Athena
It could be better for sure, but I've played enough to accept its flaws, I guess...

Simpsons: Bart VS The World
This is way better than the games that came before and after it (Space Mutants & Radioactive Man). It would probably suffer a lot due to age, but I had a good time with it on a rental.

Winter Games
I just find the Ski Jump insanely fun in this game, for some reason!

Karate Champ
It's not as good as the arcade one, but nostalgia runs deep for this game in me.

I agree that Bart VS the World is the best of the NES Simpsons games(Not counting Krusyt's Fun House, which IS good). It still had broken controls, and the sound and graphics were horrid, but at least the levels were varied. Plus, skateboarding on the Great Wall of China was kind of cool.

Wow, you have Wizards and Warriors 1 and 3 but not 2? (Which was Ironsword)

You missed out man, Ironsword was the best of the series.

EDIT: Wait a second, I just read that list more closely. WTF! Ironsword easily killed both W&W1 and 3! What is wrong with you!

That list rocks my world, thanks!

Also, he is right ... Ironsword (although the controls are a LITTLE funky .. and there are some insanely difficult parts in it) is a superior product than 1.

I was looking for Ivan Ironman's Super Offroad. I remember that being GREAT fun as a kid.
