My NES Guide: I filtered out the crap in the NES library.

This thread is fantastic. It reminded me of how many NES games I actually finished back in the day.

I agree with the list in general, but I was wondering if anybody could specifically give me impressions on these games:

Darkwing Duck and Duck Tales 2 (loved Duck Tales)

R.C. Pro-Am 2 (loved R.C. Pro-Am)

Startropics and Zoda's Revenge

River City Ransom

I know that RCR has a very good reputation, but am totally unsure of the other games, namely the sequels. I don't emulate BTW.

Thanks.

Sure.

Darkwing Duck - Fantastic Mega Man clone by Capcom. Not too difficult, but its fun while it lasts, and has some great music.

Duck Tales 2 - Much harder than the first Duck Tales, with a few puzzle-solving elements thrown in.

R.C. Pro AM 2 - Really more of the same, but that can be a good thing!

StarTropics and Zoda's Revenge. Great Adventure games in the tradition of Zelda. I'd recommend StarTropics quite hightly. I'd only recommend Zoda is you really dug the first one.

River City Ransom - The best beat-em-up on the console this side of Battletoads. You can buy items, earn experience and learn new moves much like the original Double Dragon. I'd recommend the GBA version too,but this is an NES thread, after all. :)

Unless you are lucky to find them for a couple of dollars in which case you might want to pick them up. Panesian games are rare and worth mucho money.

AVOID: Raid on Bungeling Bay, Thunderbirds, Magmax, Cybernoid, Alpha Mission, The Last Starfighter, Robodemons, P’Radius Conflict, Moon Ranger, Mission Cobra, Galactic Crusader, Double Strike

May I ask why? C64 rev was a bloody classic, you know.

Cybernoid was a C64 game? That I didnt' know. As for the NES version, its probably no worse than that version. The game is worth taking a look at if for no other reason than it's uniqueness. Sort of a shooter/Platformer hybrid. I'll put it under "Worth Playing". It controls well enough and provides a good challenge. It could use some music, though.

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.
I won't bother arguing your choices... I'm just impressed with the effort alone. This thread should become one where everyone gets together to compile lists for all the major platforms and maybe even arcade as well.

I'm considering making a similar list for the Genesis.

SNES I might consider, but I haven't played nearly all the games for that system.

True, although if I actually owned those games, I'd be afraid to play them anyway, in fear that one would break. Can't con somebody into spending 400 dollars for a terrible, unliscenced game if it doesn't work, can I?

Gremlins 2 is listed twice..on purpose?

Other Good Ones: Wizards & Warriors1-3, Tiny Toon Adventures, Whomp ‘Em, Rescue Rangers 2, Mega Man 1, 4-6, Power Blade 1-2, MC Kids, Kiwi Kraze, Jackie Chan’s Action Kung Fu, The Flintstones 1-2, Felix the Cat, Duck Tales 1-2, Bucky O’Hare, 3D World Runner, Gremlins 2

ACTION:
BEST: Castlevania, Castlevania 3, Metal Storm, Batman, Metal Gear, Ninja Gaiden 1-3, Vice: Project Doom, Shatterhand, Shadow of the Ninja, Super Dodge Ball, Kabuki: Quantum Fighter, Blaster Master

No, that wasn't intentional. But I guess it could go either way with Gremlins. It's really more of an action game, really. I'll fix that, thanks for pointing it out.

Awesome list though..there's not too many I have gripes with, and those are all mainly things I would flip-flop from either 'Best' to 'Good' or vice-versa, so the point is kinda moot.

I gotta question you guys might be able to answer since we are on this topic;

I also own many NES games.

Isn't it possible that the actual silicon/chip inside the NES cartridges could rust or deteriorate over time? I wonder of the ideal conditions so I can keep these boxes of games for a long while.

Just going by this little law, thats all.

I also have a quick question for some of you buffs out there. Can anyone tell me what the name of this really weird zombie shooter that was on the system? What was so weird about it was you played the game at night in front of this graveyard, and along with the regular zombies there was these women with baby carriages, perhaps single zombie mothers, I don't know, anyone remember this?

Here's a quick question about Ring King for the NES. Did the developers intentionally make the in between round animations on purpose? (i.e. The trainer giving your boxer a BJ.) :lol

Great find!

The two most under-VALUED games for the NES are undoubtebly Metal Storm and Vice: Project Doom. They never go for more than mere pennies, neither one is particularly easy to locate, AND they're frickin' brilliant games.

While I don't agree with everything you said (Werewolf and Target: Renegade are total crap for instance), I believe your assessments to be pretty much spot on. It's nice to see, as the various games lists I've consulted on the internet over the years have never been critical enough for my tastes. I love the NES with all my 1980s gamer's heart, but many terrible games are left unscathed only because they were released 15 or so years ago. Bravo!

AVOID: Ikari Warriors 1

Aww.

My brother bought a second hand NES with mario 3 in the early Ninties. Ikari Warrriors was inside the cartridge slot. It was fun now and again in co-op.

Wow, this thread brings me back.

I have been thinking about updating this and making it a bit more organized. And the ACTION and PLATFORMER categories are a bit...vague.

And no, I'm not putting Ikari 1 higher than 'avoid'. Great arcade classic....but an almost unplayable NES port(unless I get ganged up on...which it appears I am :lol )

I was wondering is "Kid Icarus" in the list? I might've overlooked it .

Is that game list under action or adventure?

I had it under 'Adventure'.

But...having it in the same category as Zelda and Crystalis is a bit strange. I begrudgingly moved both it and Metroid to 'Platformer'.

Disagree with some of this list, but at least you put Friday the 13th in the "worth playing" category. Although I think that game is one of the better NES games (severely underrated). From a fellow NES enthusiast, great effort!

Also, I may have overlooked it, but where is Super Dodgeball on your list? That's one of the best multiplayer NES games IMO.

I put Super Dodgeball under 'action'. A strange choice, I know. But it's the only dodgeball game on the system, and I thought it would be lame to stick it by itself. And since it's borderline sports anyway, I just said, the hell with it, stick it under 'action'.

I agree that Friday the 13th is underrated. Many people seem to write it off as a terrible game like Total Recall without having ever played it.

Thanks for the props.

Oh, and its ok to disagree. This is all up for debate anyway, which is the main reason I created this topic(almost two years ago :D ). I switch stuff around on this all the time, judging mostly by popular concensus. So if you have any disagreements, feel free to bash me over the head with your opinion :)

Haha, my disagreements are pretty nill and not really worth arguing over. It's not like you put Crystalis in a crap category or anything like that. It's definitely an awesome list. There were a few games in the "worth playing" category that I always thought were terrible, but it's nothing worth mentioning by any means.

I'm glad you agree about Friday the 13th, I think the main reason people tend to think of it as "terrible" is because it's a very difficult game at first. I gained a whole new appreciation for it once I learned how to play it well and beat it. It's one of the earliest "survival horror" games I can think of.
