After 12 years in the making, Activision Blizzard’s real-time strategy sequel ‘Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty’ flies in at No1, which is the first PC exclusive to hit the All Formats top spot this year.

The original game debuted at No24 in the All Formats Chart back in 1998 and wasn’t even the highest selling PC game that week (Lucasarts’ Star Wars Supremacy was). In fact the sequel has sold more this week than the original’s entire UK lifetime sales (only boxed product is accounted for). With no other new entries this week we see Disney’s ‘Toy Story 3’ (-8%), Rockstar/Take2’s ‘Red Dead Redemption’ (-8%), Ubisoft’s ‘Dance on Broadway’ (-11%) and Warner Bros. Interactive’s ‘Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4’ (-10%) all slide down a place to No2, No3, No4 and No5 respectively. Ubisoft’s other dance title in this week’s chart, ‘Just Dance’ (+26%), is up two places to No6 followed by last week’s new entry ‘Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies’ (+27%) which is also up two places to No7.

Activsion Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (+37%) again battles it’s way into the top ten at No8 and Nintendo’s ‘Super Mario Galaxy 2’ (-5%) is at No9. Rounding off the chart this week sees a return to the top 10 for another popular FPS, EA’s ‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ (+33%).

holy crap at dragon quest. i wonder how it'll do in NPD, assuming the marketing blitz over here was employed in the US too.

why is NSMBWii so unpopular in the UK ?

The nostalgia of Super Mario Bros. has a lot of to do with NSMB Wii's sales. In fact, Nintendo showed footage of SMB1 and SMB3 in NSMB Wii commercials in Japan. The NES in Europe didn't have anywhere near the success it did in North America or Japan which limited the nostalgia effect. You can see that many new IPs on Nintendo consoles have found more success than traditional Nintendo over the past two years in some European markets.

And they like Sonic more.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 came out and seems to be killing it, much like it did in Japan - that, plus continued TV ads keeping it front and centre.

DQIX's sales even grew. Very pleasing.

Yup - it's behaving like a TV advertised casual game, not a niche product relying on pre-orders like it's predecessors did.

I'm loving it!

Dragon Quest is doing spectacularly well. Looks like the franchise is finally going mainstream :D

Week 3 is the ultimate test for casual DS games. Week 1 is the pre-orders and core gamers. Week 2 the casual gamer vanguard spots it and responds to the adverts. After that the word of mouth and general appeal of the title takes over.

As it's been selling out in a few places I expect it to be doing OK next week. I'm about 15 hours in.

DQ 9 is doing amazingly well. But I do wonder how many casual DS owners bought it after seeing the commercials, and then have realised it might not actually be quite the game they imagined. Showing the character creation thing might just have duped a fair few people I reckon.

We'll see in the next week or two if it collapses - if the performance so far is thanks to "misleading" ads then I'd expect sales to drop off sharply.

First we had Super Mario Galaxy at the top for months. Then we had Dragon Quest IX.

France is earning a lot of GAF cred :p.

This might be a very stupid question but is there a chance that DQ could outsell FF worldwide for the first time? (i don't think it's happened before but i don't know)

Considering the amount of shovelware that gets moved on the DS i am guessing being duped into a game of DQ's standard might not be to bad.

Great DQIX performance. Should easily beat VIII's sales in Europe which would be fantastic for the franchise.

Why do people keep saying Mario is unpopular in the UK? I thought NSMB DS sold over a million? Not many games reach that figure in UK. Then you have Mario Kart Wii and DS also achieving that. Look at how Galaxy 2 is staying afloat. Mario is plenty popular in UK, at least this gen.

Because Mario is less popular over here. Not just in the UK, but in Europe altogether. If JoshuaJSlone is around, I'm sure he can demonstrate that with telling figures. I'm not sure I remember correctly, but I think the best-selling Nintendo home console in Europe sold around 8 million units, a far cry from the Wii (3 times more units). Don't know about the Gameboy and GBA though.

Nintendo's efforts to penetrate markets back in the 80s in 90s were mostly limited to the US. Europe got the short hand of the stick. I'm sure there were reasons for that, but I can't remember any of them, apart maybe from lawsuits. And gaming computers being more prominent in Europe at the time.

This doesn't mean that Mario isn't popular — heck, it's still Mario —, but Super Mario Bros. is ingrained in less people's memories here than in Japan and the US. I think Mario Kart is more popular than 2D Mario at this point.

Very encouraging for DQIX.

Did Square Enix ever state their expectations for sales outside Japan? Or have they been keeping quiet since Nintendo took over publishing and distribution?

It will be interesting to see how well the price holds up in the long-run. So many of SE's DS RPGs have had massive price collapses.

if you look at German or French Charts (No. 2 and 3 markets after UK) Mario games tend to be up there in the Top 10 and stay there for a long time

not so in the UK market

Yeah, my bad, I was exaggerating.

For some reason France and the Netherlands really like 3D Mario in particular. I wonder how NSMB Wii compares in those countries.

France has been very receptive to Japanese culture and videogames. A lot Japanese games that failed to make an impact in other European nations, especially JRPGs, performed well in France. Germany was one of the few countries in which the Gamecube was not a total disaster. Mario is popular through the GBA ports of 2D Mario and through Mario Kart: Double Dash.

I don't know but seriously we seem to love Mario games and not make that much difference between 2d sidescroller and 3d starfinder....
If you ask me I prefer the sidescroller though >.>

as a side not, nobody cared about Smash before Brawl here, and I mean not to the extent of Mario Kart.
By that I mean they actually made Mario Kart tourney in France while the fighter scene was devoid of the plumber before Brawl (if that one is even used now)
Mario Kart is VERY popular.
Also France is indeed VERY receptive to Japanese culture in general since a long time now, after all it's one of the country were manga make some big numbers (with a very diverse market to boot, something like 5 major publishers and a multitude of smaller ones that thrive or die).
But it's still irrelevant as Mario is not really seen as a japanese product anyway.

I like how Starcraft 2 sold more in first week than the 1st one in the entire lifetime. :lol

It also seems that Resistance 2 broke 300k in UK... Not bad.

It's always funny when old games get ELSPA sales awards. I just imagine they must have been teetering about 10 copies away for months or something.
