‘Mafia II’ from 2K Games/Take 2 grabs the top spot in the Entertainment Software Charts from Square’s ‘Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days’ (+33%) with the biggest UK game launch since Take 2’s very own ‘Red Dead Redemption’ 14 weeks ago.

The Xbox 360 version is the Don, taking 52% of all Mafia II sales, while PS3 hits 41% and the PC version 7%. ‘Mafia’ was originally launched as a PC game 8 years ago, with PS2 and Xbox versions following in early 2004. The combined launch weeks of the PC, PS2 and Xbox versions of the original game only account for 29% of its successor’s first week sales (PC, XB360 & PS3). Square’s ‘Kane & Lynch 2’ drops to No2 despite an impressive rise of 33% in sales in its second week. Previous All Formats No1s ‘Toy Story 3’ (-11%) and ‘Red Dead Redemption’ (+0%) both make way, falling one place to No’s 3 and 4 respectively.

Wii console hardware selling at £129.99 helps boost the bundled ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (+91%) from No16 to No5. Perennial Top 10 contender ‘Just Dance’ (+4%) slips one place to No6, but remains ahead of 'Super Mario Galaxy 2’ (+8%) which is a non-mover at No7. ‘Lego Harry Potter’ (-12%) is the biggest Top 10 faller, down from No4 to No8, while City Interactive's 'Sniper: Ghost Warrior' re-enters the Top 10 with their highest ever chart position, up from No13 to No9, jumping Ubisoft’s ‘Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands’ (+4%) at No10.

Or seeing a week old release at £18 instead or £40 tempted people to dip in

Exactly, who could resist at that price.

I fully expect to see Mafia II with the same price discount in a week or two when all those pre owned copies come flooding back in and are not selling.

Seriously, the legs on this game is truly beyond all comprehension.

Well, Mafia 2 started well, Kane & Lynch enjoying an upsurge in sales (!) and the likes of Mario Galaxy 2, Just Dance and Red Dead hanging on doggedly.

There's a polish interview out with the developer and Sniper: Ghost Warrior has now sold around 100k in UK alone (360+PC). Pretty big for such a title.

Also 200k in US, 500k worldwide.

Mafia II has Don it Again

06/Sep/2010

2KGames/Take 2 prove that crime does pay by holding the No1 spot for two weeks in a row with ‘Mafia II’ despite a 23% drop in sales.

Square Enix’s ‘Kane & Lynch: Dog Days’ (-19%) continues to bite at the heels at No2 followed by Nintendo’s ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (+19%) at No3 which is at its highest position since December 2009. Disney’s movie tie-in ‘Toy Story 3’ (-14%) slips down another place to No4 and Take 2’s ‘Red Dead Redemption (-15%) follows suit dropping to No5. Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ (-9%) and Nintendo’s ‘Super Mario Galaxy 2’ (-10%) hold their positions at No6 and No7 respectively. City Interactive’s FPS ‘Sniper: Ghost Warrior’ (+1%) continues to sneak up the charts at No8 and Ubisoft’s ‘Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands’ (+1%) leaps up to No9. Giving Ubisoft three titles in the Top 10 is new entry ‘Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X. 2’ at No10.

The only other new entries in the Top 40 this week are both Nintendo’s with ‘Metroid: Other M’ at No12 and ‘Tetris Party Deluxe’ at No23.

It would seem that either Sniper: Ghost Warrior (released June 24th) is an absolute sales titan or Metroid: Other M is bombing pretty hard.

Well, Corruption landed at #7 (All Formats) while the Trilogy was a complete no-show and Echoes launched at #33. Metroid is really more or less a US thing.

Pachter once again makes himself look an absolute idiot. :p

Surprising the WoW drop was 'only' 23%. Most games drop off far harder than that.

As noted, Metroid has never really been a big seller in the UK. Its placement is probably a bit better than expected, but it's not going to be a big hit.

DQIX continues spiralling out of the charts - really keen to know what its LTD is - and SMG2 holds on and on and on.

Considering the 10th best selling game in July was selling a weekly average of 6k copies I'd say it's the latter.

It will probably be no1 next week as well. Their is a distinct lack of any competition until Halo Reach comes out.

I didn't know HAWX 2 was a one-week exclusive lol.

Valkyria Chronicles 2 PSP not on the overall charts but #1 in PSP full price chart. VC1 PS3 only debuted #18 in the PS3 full price chart (didn't chart overall either). Wouldn't surprise me if a PS3 #18 is better than a PSP #1 though!

Prime 1 launched at no1 though. Not sure about Fusion or Zero Mission, but Metroid has at least done well here once, lol.

I may be wrong, but I seem to remember that the release of Prime coincided with the price of the GC really going in the tank.

Eh don't think it could end up doing 1.5-2 million unless it ends up selling well in the U.S. The game is going to bomb hard in Japan as well. Unless you mean sold to retailers but even than I don't see them buying too much game stock for a game like Metroid.

The Metroid Prime games managed to pull off those kind of numbers perfectly fine. Other M seems to be selling more or less in line with those games.

What makes you say it's going to bomb hard in Japan? I would have thought it'd do okay since it seems to have been developed with Japan in mind. Better than the Prime games did there anyway.

But yeah, the Metroid series is not a huge seller. Still should end up at around 1.5-2 million worldwide when all is said and done though.
They actually showed the US live action ad over here in the UK. I only saw it once, though. They should have had that in every ad break rather than the other two.

I'm sure the game will inevitably do well in the long run.

If I remember correctly seeing the sales of the Metroid games only the first game sold well while the other Metroid game hadn't. Can't find the Metroid sales that was posted. Think it was in a Media Create Sales thread.

Edit: Numbers from that thread:

Anyone else getting kind of interested in Sniper: Ghost Warrior because of the huge legs?

I briefly considered picking it up on saturday but i have enough games to get through at the moment.

Nothing to see here. Metroid has never been a big seller in Europe, it's main audience has almost always been in the US. It's not going to change in the forseeable future.

The Metroid games almost always manage to sell at least 1 million units worldwide. I'm sure Other M will do the same. It's not fantastic for what is one of Nintendo's more significant franchises but it's just the way it is. Even Prime, which is (I think?) the best selling Metroid, only managed around 2.5 million, and that was bundled with the GC for a period of time anyway.
