Hunter Blade Closed Beta Begins: F2P Monster Hunter Clone!

MMOSite reports that Hunter Blade Online, the infamous F2P Monster Hunter clone developed Joy-China, began its English closed beta yesterday.
MMOSite said:
The news comes from a post in ONRPG that Hunter Blade, known as the Chinese version of Monster Hunter Frontier Online seems to have an English server. Developed by JoyChina, Hunter Blade is a 3D action MMORPG features gorgeous graphics and dynamic action designs. The closed beta test has begun at 0:00 A.M on August 24th.

ONRPG said:
As a 3D action hunting game, Hunter Blade emphasizes the game balance and smooth fighting actions based on the beautiful game scene. Server of this testing will be WingWolf (Wing Wolf is violent, cruel and has vigorous stature and powerful wings. It also has a keen vision and sense of smell. It is very good at ambush and chase of small prey. When you meet a winged wolf, you must keep cool to observe its movements to dodge attacks, so you can jump away and attack it the time it flutters to you.)

During the closed beta test, various events will be held to give you a better game experience. You can reach the top level 60 in this test but the game data of this testing will be deleted after the test. An English teaser site is now available. You can check out more information and download the client from the website.
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, what we've seen of Hunter Blade so far has been extremely flattering, but the graphics engine looks nice and Joy-China seems to have figured out the basic MH gameplay. I know that it's just another F2P ripoff, but with Monster Hunter's future in the West uncertain, I thought it would be worth starting a thread about.

Downloading the EU Beta now, will update my thoughts and opinions later on. Probably in a Monster Hunter Tri style Diary. :D

Tried it out today, game is F2P so I didn't expect much. It's pretty much the basis of MH with some extra things included that are usual in MMO's (like autowalk).
You can use your controller and map buttons just like in other MH games (dual analog!). Graphics look good (as you can see in the screen above) not that much worse then let's say: Monster Hunter Frontier considering this is F2P. The only big complaint I have is the small text on a high resolution, it's really annoying and I hope there is a fix for this.

Tried it out yesterday with my brother and it's kind of fun.
Any other GAFer playing it?

I am, just PM if you want to play or anything. The game indeed is too easy but it's not too bad for a clone.

Are there any mirrors of the beta? From the official site it would take me 17 hours.

Also, is it legal? Even the player attack animations are the same as MonHun...

Use 'orbit' to download the beta (speeds it up), it will take ~1.5 hours.

I think Capcom already tried to sue a company for a similar game but lost.

EDIT: some screens to show people how the game looks like.

Copyright laws are very relaxed to non-existent in China, hence why you see all these clones.

I say fuck Capcom and bring on all the clones, I want a F2P Monster Hunter on PC. China just does what Capcom don't.

That was Fighter's History, and it was a work of creative genius compared to the OP video.

You know, with Monster Hunter clones popping up here and there, I wish someone would bring out a bigger budget version on either an HD console or the PC.

Hit level 23 I think, game doesn't really get harder :/
1 - 20 is the tutorial area.
I'm currently level 41 and the Crab King is rather tough on Challenge.

Wow, the beach area in one of the trailers looks like a plainer and uglier replica of the jungle in MH2.

EDIT: Holy shit, the logo splash at the end looks and sounds like MH too. When the title said clone, i didnt believe it to be so literal.

Whoa, this got bumped? Neat. My level is currently in the early 20's, and although I have some gripes, I find Hunter Blade to be a pretty agreeable Monster Hunter subsitute. The difficulty is still hella low and it's not nearly as immersive as the real thing, but the animations and enemies are a lot better than I was expecting. They just need to give me a difficulty setting that hides health bars, work out the kinks in their controller support to give me proper analog movement, and generally continue to clean up the game.

It's been two-ish weeks since I last played - Is the font still hideous, tiny, and unreadable?

Yeah. You can eventually fix it using AppLocale but they said it's gonna be fixed 'till Open Beta.

chinese mmo tend to be absurdly easy until mid/late game. Then the end pretty much require cashshop to survive.
In current Close Beta you have (kinda) unlimited access to all cashshop items.
There are no items that I felt are neccessary or OP which is relieving.

Yeah, I was intrigued by this as well. The leveling scheme also seems very sane compared to some other MMOs out there, and only affects your talent tree and access to gear, rather than any of your character's inherent abilities.

Also, I find it funny that the "closed" beta is completely open to join. Probably should have bumped the thread again when I figured that out back in August...

Hoped on this shit in a minute, just built a bad ass PC... and I loves me some monster hunter....... but I only played the PSP ones... and then emulated 3 on dolphin... sooooooo might as well.

Its almost nauseating how much of a rip this is......... but it looks fun XD

If anything, I can see this game making a MMO or HD (PS3 Xbox 360,MH5?) monster hunter come out faster. If it gets big that is...

So far this will hold me down... I dont play my psp anyway XD

You can use Microsoft AppLocale and create a link to blade.exe with "Chinese (simplified)".
The font will be 1 - 2pts bigger that way.
Or just wait for the Open Beta.

Not sure what I am doing wrong, but I keep getting database error after signing up for the beta access. It seems like a fairly common issue on the game's forum so hopefully..

Downloaded using this so maybe that is it?

Wow thanks for the Tip. Just tried it and it worked! Before I got Database error. Maybe it was down before... About to try it.

Got bored of this very quickly purely because of the AI. Also attacks dong consume stamina? It pretty much made dual blades god tier.

Back to Freedom Unite.

Got to login. Seems their registration is busted so they manually activate new accounts every so often, hence the errors. Or something. Game seems well made enough so far but I didn't even get to a boss yet, just the early gathering/herbivore murder stuff.

It's such a rip off Capcom should be able to sue though. At least for versions available outside China?

It's basically a Monster Hunter game with very slightly altered mechanics, like skinning (which you can do with your weapon out, though it sheathes it too) and other functions having a dedicated button instead of dual function buttons based on if you have your weapon sheathed or unsheathed, completing quests by going to the NPCs that gave them rather than just on the field, having that return home stone, and item hotkeys instead of the single item use button and item browsing functions, and other such things. The great sword and longsword that I tried functioned identically to Monster Hunter, the same attacks, combos, animations, dodge openings, etc.

Oh yeah, the hitboxes are a little off too. The monsters seemed okay enough but my own attacks missed way too much, seemed I have to directly center the monsters to hit. I don't know about the AI, the herbivores seemed similar enough to Monster Hunter, though more eager to attack you. I didn't get to a boss yet.

You cannot sue for plain gameplay resemblences. The same way all the FPS have similar gameplay foundations.
It's Capcom's fault for not localizing Monster Hunter Frontier Online.

Level 1 - 20 is the tutorial, even afterwards it's not much of a challenge. I think the real game begins at level 40, but it's really easy and quite fast to reach it.
Me and my brother reached 40 in less than a day, so that should be an indicator. There are way too many quests and they give plenty of EXP.

Personally, I have no issues with the hitboxes at all, although the AI is very predictable. It get's tougher later on eventually. I find the Crab King kinda tough on Challenge, especially with just two players.

And what part of what I said indicates they're mere plain gameplay resemblences?

No, the two are completely unrelated, regardless of how some people "feel".
Xane said:

I had issues mainly with things like the great sword's backslash not hitting when it's just about shaving a monster sideways, it would have been a clean hit in MonHun.

Weapon reach seems to start off lower than the models indicate too, but that might just be my inexperience with the longsword.

And the main movement controls only having 8 way directions also causes issues playing with a gamepad.

Lol. I logged on and this was in my face. I wonder what else they've ripped off...

Yeah, I agree. At level 40 it started getting more interesting. Until now, the Crab King seems to be the most difficult boss I've encountered yet, especially on Challenge.

That lizard has some of Khezu's attacks, heh.

The boss monsters start to have decent health above the "common" mode, whatever it's called.

Also, there's way too much delay after getting knocked down, sometimes the boss has already started another attack just as you get up and you get hit again. The boar was annoying in that way the first time I fought it on that difficulty, as up to that point it took few hits to die so I rarely got hit at all to notice it. I figure I'll stick with that difficulty for solo (if I stick with the game at all), the challenge mode (final difficulty choice I guess) is probably doable too due to the weak AI but it could get annoying solo.

Edit: actually, I just realised I never even made any consumable items (though I've crafted some new armors and weapons), I've only ever used the handful of starting potions and other than that just a few supply items, mostly the sharpening stones at that. It's probably much easier if you actually craft items and use them like you must do in MonHun.

Yeah, in D-Index and Challenge, monsters have like 16k x 6 health.
It is still rather easy to defeat them, but it'll start changing later on (those crab kings are evil).

You can get combo'd in MH as well. I don't mind it, it's part of the challenge.

For the duration of the Closed Beta, you can rank up Jade Shells and buy potions off the cashshop for the time being.
But yeah, you can also synthesize potions like in MH.
