Theme: "Longing"

Tragicomedy said:
If it hasn't been done yet, I'd like the theme to be longing. It can be longing for anything from a better job to a better love life to whatever.
Let me know if that works.

Optional Secondary Objective: "Reference"

Tragicomedy said:
The secondary is to have the poem thematically tie into a quote or written line from a famous author.

I treated her to lunch and then she
shat upon my heart once more,
hummus and champagne she spat out
deep upon my carseat floor.

She protested what I yearned for
standing on thy front lawn green,
"You're a nice guy" then she exclaimed
on career she's focused keen.

She sat upon my carseat longing
for a man of higher means,
she found him in Chicago half a
thousand miles away from me.

And so my Anna why despise thee
from Pacific to Eastern bound?
You're love once was once an idol herein,
your breath upon my face a sound.

Moretti.
Your tidings.
Your love.
Your heart.
So petty.

I'm not sure if this is entirely shit, as I haven't tried my hand at poetry in about 10 years, but a Haiku:

The wind in my sails,
And I scan the horizon.
It hurts to be free.

Thanks! I'm totally in. I have a soccer (errr, football) match tonight but I'll try to have something whipped up later today or tomorrow afternoon.

You're not in til you get an entry in amigo!

On another note, as happens with nanowrimo, there may be distruptions, so we best do what we can to keep this train chugging along, whilst the prose writers take a nice little break. Being writers, they actually write a ton more then they usually do, so...

Anyways... not a lot of time left in this one. Best get a move on if I want in on this one.

The Garden of Forking Paths

Like Borges' "two bald men fighting over a comb,"
you and I never knew what we wanted
or why we wanted it.
All we knew was the want.

Our appetites were never satisfied.
Insatiable desire was our only common ground.
We fed off each other's souls that way,
always taking and never replenishing,
until the rainforest of our love was left desolate.

Icicles by Cynthia

Never finding what she seeks
on the rimed streets, the roofrims.

Never
and yet always looking.

Breathe out mist and winter days
of ill-remembered, yearned-for youth.
Keep the flame alight.
Observe, each year, as though it were the first.

Vanity in frost,

Fernweh & Heimweh

To the snowy hills, I climb
The trees dying their yearly death
A draw to travel yearns in me
To visit a place once home, now forgot

But upon my visit's end
I must travel again
And return the home that is so new
and oh so baren

In constant flux, my need to travel yearns for me
In constant flux, my heart resides, the only home I know.
In constant flux, my wheels upon snowy ground
traveling the vast expanses

Although I do not condone binge drinking, I suppose it's fair to say that you ain't a poetry corner drunkard, till you write a poem 2/3rd's drunk. ;)

Ooh new entries. Welcome back fellas.

It will come to you in a dream, they said
The decieving, thorned rose adorned bed
So I burnt my whole life sleeping
The stab wounds in my back bleeding

The dangling carrot in my tunnel of vision
A parrot repeating something not in the mission
Tarot reader said im are a result of a Pharaoh breeder
Unkempt land harrowed straight, but i'm no leader

Decided parameters dictated by false demigods
Fall in line, or be exorcised, still alive against many odds
Pill pushers preaching to sedate the madness
Hands extended, out of reach irate gods and goddesses

Not everyone is destined to become supreme leader
The lust for power, benevolent dictator to a wife beater
This is what was planned for me, I free-fell onto the x marked spot
Hustling roses down the avenues of the dead, to buy a cemetary plot

The Empty Throne

The ship finally docked,
they crowned you with gold,
a king's promise I asked,
return before we're old.
And then you went away.

Rumors and fear swelled,
you were lost at sea,
your passion for her,
was beyond that of me.
And forever you stayed away.

But no, not forever,
we would not be undone,
beyond space and sea,
another song to be sung.
And then you blew us away.

A king returns,
new treasures unearthed and unbound,
to tear down false idols,
a new dimension found.
And then we all came together to say:

Never again disappear,
you are not wantonly beckoned,
return - our king, with that angel,
and film that shit at sixty frames per second.

Dear Dad

I was just a teen when you left,
took the easy way out.
I am a man today,
but I still miss you like a little child.

You missed out on my life,
took the easy way out.
My wife would love to meet you,
you will never see my kids.

A boy and a man needs a father in their life,
I miss you like hell but you had to leave.
It hurts like shit just writing these words,
I will never understand.

Life can be bad and pull you down,
I miss you like hell but you had to leave.
I have to be strong for me and my family,
but I rather would just break down in tears.

You drove away to take your life,
you never said farewell.
what was the last thing on your mind?
your family or your beer?

Life goes on and I am still here,
older than you.
You taught me one thing in life,
I need to be stronger than you.

Hey, me too! I hope this isn't completely terrible.

(Stealth edit: I would love thoughts on this more than anything.)

the anatomy of a broken heart

dawn passes by and the tip of my nose
catches the scent of your faded red clothes
and i wish
with all desperation and quiet hope
that someday, i will fall asleep to it.

noon then breaks with easy conversation,
with shared joy and hidden elation
and i look
up to the tenderness in your eyes
and smile back at you.

the slow evenings with just you and me
spin tales in my mind of fantasy and need
and i might
almost believe in now and forever
if you did.

the midnight gleaning arrives with rain
during those moments time won't explain
and i match
the sound of my breathing
to the beat of your heart.

when morning rises, i will be here
if you want a girl who's true and fair
and fingers crossed, i watch you leave,
but you never
ever
look back at me.

Grasped at, with fingers flailing,
like twine cast upon the wind,
the memory, soft and ailing,
at the torn corners, dimmed,
as peoples faces faded on,
and conversation passed by,
distinction and detail long gone,
the memory had begun to die,
until that one burning moment
was, alone, all which remained,
thought upon in dull pauses spent
wistfully dreaming of lives lived again,
free from mistakes you failed to prevent.

Three post combo ftw.

Vote for your favourite three; order them
1,
2,
3.
hms (honourable mentions)

Sometimes, for copyright reasons and to retain first publishing rights, some will post password protected pdfs. Quoting such a post will show you the password. I've done it this week, even though I don't mean to publish this or send off to a publisher; I did this because I think it's good practice for this thread and the sister thread. A decent habit to keep up, I guess.

Voting starts right now.

I'm really happy to see this much participation and the quality of all these poems. Great thread!

1. Scullibundo - The Empty Throne
2. AnkitT - Rose
3. Ashes - Opus #35

Honorable mentions:
- Hanmik - Dear Dad (thanks for laying all those emotions out there, good stuff)

It was close enough between a couple of poems. I'll add up the votes when we wake up. Today, really is the final final time. I promise.
