From the developers of Rift, Trion has released a sci-fi MMOFPS, Defiance, on PC, PS3 as well as the Xbox 360 - tying them all into the upcoming SyFy science-fiction TV-series by the same name. In addition to the events of the show influencing the game, there's a chance that what you do in the game might affect the show as well.
The game follows the so-called B2P-model, which means that you buy the game but do not need to pay a subscription fee. Instead, there will be both microtransactions and larger expansions to add content in addition to the free content updates.

In the world of Defiance you play the role of an Ark Hunter, a specialist in survival, combat and tracking who braves dangerous frontiers to locate and retrieve lost relics of alien or advanced origins in return for great financial rewards. Currently you can play as either Human or Irathient ark hunters, but more playable races are confirmed (one of which will be in the DLC season pass)

Wreckage from the Votan ships that exploded in space periodically falls to Earth. These meteor-like fragments usually contain rare and valuable alien technology. While Small arkfalls can be tackled by a brave Ark Hunter or two and go unnoticed by everyone else, Major arkfalls are impossible to ignore as they blacken the skies, turning the surroundings into a violent torrent of debris. As an Ark Hunter’s EGO sounds the alert, a massive section of arkfall impacts the land. Filled with arktech wonders and/or rare resources, these large arkfalls attract a horde of beasts, who are often in turn dwarfed by a massive guardian of the species, intent on claiming the arkfall for themselves. Only an army of powerful Ark Hunters can hope to stand against the monsters of a major arkfall and live to claim the glory and rare rewards found within.

Guided by the celebrity scientist Karl Von Bach, a team of Ark Hunters embark on an Earth Republic-funded expedition to find a mysterious alien relic rumored to have been lost in the Bay Area. Unfortunately, they are not the only ones searching, and their ship is soon brought down by mysterious forces. Now the Ark Hunters must try to gather local information to find the artifact and thwart looming dangers that threaten all life in the Bay Area. In addition to the main missions following the main story line of the game, that is tied to the TV-series, you will as a player be able to engage in a number of side-missions as well as challenges with leaderboards and special rewards of their own.

In addition to being able to explore the missions, side missions, and challenges with your friends, you'll be able to shoot them up too if you so fancy. There's both instanced PVP as well as an ongoing world PVP called the "Shadow War".

Ark Hunters in the vicinity of certain arktech will receive mercenary contract invites to an ongoing Shadow War. Those who choose to sign up become what are known as Shadow Operatives, soldiers working in the “shadows” of Echelon, a private military corporation. These Shadow Operatives quickly fill the ranks of two teams. Teams are then directed by Echelon to converge on the fallen arktech, where they must battle to claim the prize.
To the winners go the spoils: Echelon credits to be used on special gear, weapons, and armor, as well as a ranking on the Echelon mercenary leaderboards.

Through the coures of the game you will recieve a number of EGO points. These can be spent on EGO powers, Blur/Cloak/Decoy/Overcharge, and a number of EGO perks which provide passive benefits. You don't need to go into this system blindly though, as Defiance fans have put together an EGO point calculator.

Looks really neat, will be waiting a week or two to see how the xbox version fares. Hope it does well in the long term, semi-concerned over the community being split three ways.

I have it on steam. Any chance for pre load? Hit me up if you want to play.

RealityExists is my user name.

Not enough info. Does this game need a sub? Is it really a mmo or more like borderlands etc?

No sub required.
It is an MMO, but with genuine FPS mechanics, a shooting and looting system that is reminiscent of Borderlands. Not to the same depth, of course not, but instead you get massive encounters and player interactions similar to what can be found in other MMOs.

Hate to derail but are any you on America's east cost? South of New york if so how is youtube workiing for you. The biffering is so bad its become unwatchable

The game and show was a collaboration between scyfy and trion. Game has been in development for 5 years. In my opinion its a cross between apb, borderlands, halo, and a pinch of tf2 thrown in.

Its quite fun as i played the alpha version which was closed beta their naming was weird.

There's no sub that i know of so its like guildwars. There well be dlc.

If your not seeing your key in steam go into big picture mode and go to defiance in library and right click defiance and cdkey should show.

In all I put about 30 hours into the PS3 beta. I found it to be incredibly addictive and I especially liked the random co-op that happens when others come up along side you and join you in missions. Here's a cross-post of my thoughts on the PS3 beta:

"Back when I was playing a lot of 'Red Faction: Guerrilla' I remember thinking "It'd be cool of this was an MMO." That's how Defiance feels to me and that's a good thing. This is the first MMO I've played that doesn't feel like I'm doing lame missions (collect five of these, etc) just to level up. To me it feels more like a single player game that other real players can join in at any time. It's pretty satisfying to be outnumbered in a mutant firefight and then have several players role up on ATVs and help out. Loot is fun too. I've picked up some good loot from just roaming about doing random side missions, clearing areas, etc. The voice acting can be pretty awful and the graphics aren't the best but after several hours with it I'm having a lot fun and that's what matters most to me."

Really looking forward to this game, hopefully it does decent. Didn't manage to get in on the beta but preordered anyway. Come on tomorrow!

Not sure if any of my friends are picking this up or not, but would love to play with some US 360 Gaffers, GT same as name :)

Yeah I was playing it a couple hours ago.

And if you bought it on Steam, you can take your CD keys and plug them into Trion's website and download the client there.

obviously my friends aren't going to dump money on this game, but I'm more or so willing to.

How is this game for lone wolves who like to pug it up? Are there systems in place that facilitate this kind of play like "find-a-group?"

I'm assuming there will be a good number of Gaf's that get it don't feel like you have to lone wolf it.

I'll be picking up my copy for the xbox360 tomorrow in the AM probably play most of the day as I have the late shift tomorrow. Looking forward to it. Game looks like a lot of fun.

1st, negative outlook - Downloading the game, I was half way through it then I got an error about the patching not updating. As a result the installer closes out, no big deal though. I click the installer to continue...it starts ALL over again...are you kidding me? Granted it only takes me 1h 25m to download it...it seriously started all over? Really? REEEEEAAAAALLLYYYY?!

Everyone can help you with most quests as they are completing them themselves. So you'll wind up with some support most of the time.

Just had a good session there on the EU server (I'm pretty certain it was EU) just getting stuck in and starting to do the same areas again from the beta. Got much better weapons from the off with the preorder items and that's making it more fun to play right from the beginning :)

Ended up doing an Arkfall and seeing a good few different enemy types already as well. Not many people on (and I couldn't get on the EU server again there now) but should be much busier tomorrow hopefully!

Also, anyone seen how big the full map is ?

US servers are up. Waiting for EU over here. Dont really know why... It was the 2nd in EU first.

BTW: Great OT!

Just played about a hour worth and I am loving what I have played so far. Really addicting and interesting landscape, the story isn't too bad either. Really looking forward to playing more and watching the show also.

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
Sounds like a fun MMO shooter which leads me to believe it'll probably be terrible :(

Wow, stealth launch tonight. Got to play it for a bit, really enjoyed what little I got to do. UI is a little awkward till I figured out all the hotkeys (seriously who puts settings on F6 instead of escape?).
With damage numbers on getting a real borderlands vibe. Little laggy at times, but the shooting was satisfying. Loaded up the pre-order car and wife was able to sit in the passenger seat, made questing fun.

You mean TPS? Unless somehow I magically played the beta not in first person.

Not sure if I want to buy it to go through the entire starting area again though. I did really enjoy those little world events that pop up.
