I don't think Famitsu scores deserve to be taken seriously.

No, it's accurate. Famitsu reviews are no better than product blurb.

Regarding Ground Zeroes, I mean - I expect the game to be excellent, not withstanding the supposedly short length. It's just that money for Kojima wouldn't seem necessary, considering his track record. The score is irrelevant, regardless of hypothetical payments.

Now Battlefield 4....

The games is still incredible.

I agree - it's quite fun. But the consistent issues and problems weigh heavily against a score this high. Money talks.

I always wondered why does Famitsu have their review scores out of 40?

Four reviewers - each reviewer is given a potential 10/10 scale, and the review score is a cumulative total.

In theory, it's a good idea - however, it does lead to some personal and skewed scores based on reviewer preference.

There's also the belief that Famitsu is paid money for reviews - there does seem credence to the idea as well.

Four reviewers each give a score out of 10 and then its added up

And yeah, I would take Famitsu reviews with a grain of salt, especially for a Metal Gear game. When Peace Walker came out there were ads in the magazine showing the Famitsu EIC playing it and raving about it. They weren't even trying to hide the fact that money was exchanged.

edit: See Peff's post below.

Huh, they really just used the 十六条旭日旗 (Naval Ensign of Japan) as the header image on that website didn't they?

Looks like the check cleared.

No, it's accurate. Famitsu reviews are no better than product blurb.

It's Famitsu, handing out 9s and 10s like candy is what they do.

Just make sure you pay the check, or you'll end up like Demon's Souls: 9/7/7/6.

Hyperbole much?

They're actually hard to please. They've only given a 40/40 to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Soulcalibur, Vagrant Story, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Nintendogs, Final Fantasy XII, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of The Patriots: 428: Füsa Sareta Shibuya de, Dragon Quest IX: Sentines of The Starry Skies, Monster Hunter Tri, Bayonetta, New Super Mario bros. wii, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Pokemon Black and White, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Yakuza 5, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle and Grand Theft Auto: V and a 39/40 to The Legend of Zelda: a Link to The Past, Virtua Fighter 2, Ridge Racer Revolution, Super Mario 64, Tekken 3, Cyber Troopers Virtual-on Oratorio Tangram, Final Fantasy X, Gran Turismo 3: A-spec, Resident Evil (gamecube), Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of The Cursed King, Gran Turismo 4, Kingdom Hearts II, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, Dead or Alive 4, Okami, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Grand Theft Auto IV, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Final Fantasy XIII, Red Dead Redemption, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, L.A. Noire, Tales of Xillia, Gears of War 3, FIFA 12, Final Fantasy type-0, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD Collection, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Resident Evil Revilations,Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Resident Evil 6, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3, the Wonderful 101, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn and Pokémon X and Y.

HEY.

... this only applies to Kojima, and I said as much above. He's too good to buy them off. Right?

.... right?

Bottom line is, there's no reason to take any Famitsu "review" seriously, good or bad. Even if they weren't paid for, those squares are literally all you get. Imagine how insightful they can possibly be.

Is that it? I have no idea why people are questioning their credibility, whatsoever!

Yeah, but how many 38-39 scores have they given out in recent years? Too many to list. They definitely used to be more discerning back in the 90's, but these days they are prone to inflating review scores just like everyone else.

I wonder how big the wall of text would be if we went all the way down to 36 (aka average 9 out of 10). Would probably be even more exaggerated.

Incredibly broken, yes.

I think it works like a slot machine. You play it over and over, and shit doesn't work, helicopters fly sideways, bullets disappear halfway to the target et cetera. Once in awhile though, something really awesome happens; like you launch a missile that gets stuck in a loop only to randomly hit a jet flying by that then ends up crashing into a bunch of snipers on a roof killing all of them, and you think "goddamn that was awesome" and all the frustrating bugs you hit in the last two hours seem like less of an issue.

Pretty soon, you are back and pulling that lever over and over waiting for the next great moment, and they come just frequently enough that you end up loving it.

BF is without a doubt the buggiest console game I have bought in some time, but I still love it despite having the common sense to know that I am an idiot for doing so.

Good, i am looking forward to this, the last MGS game i played was Guns of the Patriots & i really didn't like it after the other MGS games (i just hated that little robot that followed you about).

I know this is basically a prologue, but i picked it up for £23 with the The Phantom Pain DLC & it does look good on the PS4 from the videos i have seen.

So this thread is worthless for a while.

Yeah. When Kotaku is used as some sort of "voice of reason" to explain why you should discredit another gaming source (in this case, Famitsu), you know that any productive conversation will have to be put on hold. That's OK, though, I'm getting a kick out of the cynicism! (That's not necessarily a bad thing, as we all have our own reservations when it comes to certain game journalists.) Hard to go by a couple of numbers. Hopefully, more concrete review details come in soon (whether it be from Famitsu or any other reviewer).
