Freedom Wars Demo Impressions

Hasemo

(;・∀・)ハッ?
As some of you may know, people who bought Soul Sacrifice Delta (Japanese version), received a code to try the Freedom Wars demo (beta) a week before it's released for everyone.

This is a thread for sharing your thoughts about the game.

I've just cleared the demo. Took me about an hour, but I've skipped some of the dialogues and explanations, mostly because of the lack of any data transfer to the full version.
Since I'm going to watch all of this again, I've decided to get to the gameplay asap.

First thing that struck me was the audiovisual side of the game. While floor textures still doesn't look as good as some would want, the rest of the game is really crisp and I believe that it runs in the native resolution (don't quote me on that).
I'd post screenshots to back up that claim, but the demo doesn't allow taking them.
Music is pretty good and it fits the theme of the game really well.

As for the gameplay itself, first thing I've noticed was how slow the character moves when not dashing. Controls in general will take a lot of getting used to, especially coming straight from other hunting games, like Soul Sacrifice Delta, Monster Hunter 4 and even God Eater 2.
Torn in particular might be quite hard to master, since you must learn how to aim it at a specific part of an Abductor to be really effective during fights. Simply staying near the monster and slashing with your sword/lance will get you killed really quickly - those huge monsters have REALLY strong attacks and can knock you out in 3 hits, at least at the beginning.
Once you get used to it, it's a whole another story. Jumping, slashing, pulling yourself to walls to run away from attacks, mashing circle to make the Abductor fall down, which isn't easy, especially if the enemy is in berserk mode. Last mission of the demo was undoubtedly the best part, especially since I've started trying some new stuff, like laying Thorn Mines.
What surprised me the most about the missions themselves (mostly because I didn't pay much attention to the trailers), was that the main target wasn't killing the giant Abductor, but getting Civilians trapped inside it and saving them by carrying them to the teleporters. Your character moves really slow while carrying them and since enemies like to spawn after the boss is dead - escorting requires as much teamwork as killing the Abductor. I don't think that civilians can die, so it's not as annoying as escort missions in other games.

The cool part is that you don't actually need to kill the Abductor - breaking the cage is enough to free the person inside. Downside? When you pick up a Civilian when Abductor is still alive, the monster will go into berserk mode, gaining speed and aggressively attacking the person carrying the Civilian.

As for the Accessory (partner) system, there wasn't really a chance to dig deep into it in the demo, but your partner character is pretty useful during missions, especially since he/she can revive you when you're knocked out.

One last thing - I love how the world is presented. There's a lot attention to detail, even in the menus. Everything constantly reminds you that you're basically a prisoner and you have to buy basic rights, like... lying down to sleep.

One thing that I DIDN'T like, was how the game drops tons of explanations of all the features at once. It was really hard to remember what every weird option does, especially since the game tries so hard to show it's theme everywhere it can.

Edit:
From the PSN thread:

Edit 2:
Oh, I completely forgot - this game has a chance of being god tier with online multiplayer. I'd test the local mp, but sadly this version doesn't have it.
And yeah, still day 1 for me.

Edit 3:
Full demo playthrough by twentytwo.

Edit 4:
Videos from the nico nico stream: 1, 2.
Awesome dragon boss, green Thorn and general 4 player action.

Edit 5:
12 min long trailer.

Thank you for the impressions :)

Do you think there's a chance that someone who likes Monster Hunter but didn't like SoulSac/GodEater2/Toukiden/PSO2 could like this game? Which one would it be most similar to or is it completely different?

I think that FW is the most similar to God Eater, mostly because of being able to use guns and having at least 2 weapons at you at all time.
Still, it plays quite differently from all the other hunting games, so I think it would be the best to try the demo once it's available for everyone. You never know!

Awesome and thank you :)

One last question. Is there a hub area in the game before you start hunting, is it just a menu, or is it it like Monster Hunter where you've got the big field to explore?

I imagine the feature dump is mostly due to the nature of the demo. Assume a more padded out system to be in place once released. Then again Japan and all that.

Thanks for your impressions. Next week, it's time to clean the fridge of my 4GB for my JP account.

What is the size of the demo?

Im pretty sure the demo is very limited...

But I am really interested in what kinds of gameplay variety this game will offer.

With up to 4player co-op, some 8 player mode, and hopefully some other mechanics... I am hoping there will be lots of different ways to play

I think the state war would be fucking sick

Like the control for Japanese prefectures has never looked awesome

Also this is one of the games I'm looking forward for e3 I hope it gets an awesome booth there so people would be interested to it and buy a vita

Fuck I'm going to enjoy playing with or against you guys when this games comes to the west.

The hub opens right before the demo ends. You get the right to explore it, but never get to see it in the demo.

611MB.

One more thing I forgot to mention - while Monster Hunter/God Eater demos allowed choosing a weapon type, here you're stuck with a short sword, machine gun and get rocket launcher which you can use for one mission. :(

Still never get why any game disables screenshots. Especially a demo of an upcoming game, one would think they would want as much exposure as possible.

Thanks for the impressions though. Sounds interesting enough.

I wonder how deep the weapon and equipment customization will be

Are there armor and accessory slots too? Skills, buffs, augments or whatever

Interested to see how customization will work and whether its cosmetic or key to building a character

There are 2 weapon slots, 2 slots for items like granades/medpacks/armor packs and a slot for a special Thorn skill:

Nice write up. I've been on the fence about this game, going from hype to deflated. It defintiely seems to be keeping my interest a little more. I was imagining the battle panning out in my head, after you rescue the civialian, and the Abductor going nutso. That, plus the swarms of enemies as you rush for the exit, makes it sound like one hectic mad dash for safety. I like that.

Thanks for the impressions, will surely try it next week (and then wait for the localized release).

Would be lovely if the demo was like the vanilla Toukiden one (didn't try Kiwami yet), but eh.

sounds like good fun, thanks for the write up

how fluid is the frame rate?
I haven't noticed any frame drops, felt pretty solid.
So after killing enemies do u pick up materials? Is there a crafting system of sorts?
Yes, you get materials on the field and after completing missions.
There seems to be some crafting/upgrade system, but you don't have access to it in the demo afaik.

After the Abd is dead, roughly how many trash mob enemies spawn? SWARMS?!?!?! One or two? Or a small handful?
Depends on the mission. One had a spawn after you picked up the Civilian (enemies incoming), while another had respawning weak enemies and the teleporter was quite far.
Nothing too hard, but let's remember that it's basically the tutorial.

Right, but of course. Thanks! My interest is slowly ramping up more and more.

Ugh. As much as I like the setting/world and the graphics of this game, "hunting" games are probably my least favorite types of games to play. The demo is going to have to blow me away in order to have me buy this

Nice impressions. I was also surprised by how nice the characters look. This and Oreshika 2 are really nice looking games for different reasons.

Vita is only gonna have 5-10 minutes. I'm like 95% sure this is gonna have a trailer during that small time span. Hell, I really think they might make a bundle with the game included digitally on the Vita.
It's likely but, hey, Tretton's gone, maybe they'll do more. New guy, new hope.

Woot woot.

I'm happy to answer any questions as well, I've been through the demo *cough* three times now.

Can you give us your overall impression of the game?

Edit: @Hasemo, wow at the dragon boss's designed and the dragon's beam attack, pretty sure that is going to be one hit kill.

I just realized why they changed the name from Panopticon: it's too similar to Patapon, and when that gets its big reveal next week they can't have any confusion.

I have the PSP Monster Hunter on my Vita and the 3DS Monster Hunter, but both bored me to death. However, this game seems nice at first glance, I hope it is fun.
