Week of September 1st to the 7th, 2014.

Fighting Games Weekly is the weekly discussion thread for all things fighting games. News, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related.

Don't know what to watch right now? Check the FGCPros Twitch Group or Jaxel's Stream Viewer. If you want to watch multiple streams at once, you can use Jaxel's customizable multiviewer as well.

New to FGC-GAF is the FGC-GAF Index which lists the fighting games GAFers plays as a neat reference with some rough statistics to boot. To add yourself to the index, quote this post and use the survey link below. Please remember to save/bookmark the "Edit your response" link so you can edit your responses if/when you buy a game already on the list or a new game that releases in the future.

Last week's thread. An archive of previous FGW threads is available here.

Every week, FGW will spotlight one GAFer to get a better picture of their history with fighting games, their preferences, and much more. For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look our resident flag-waving expert, Horseress!

What fighting games do you currently play, what is your all time favourite and why?
Not playing games that much since I've been working a lot lately, but when I have a chance, I play UNiEL (still don't understand all the mechanics yet, but I'm getting there) and USFIV.

My all time favourite has to be the all time most hated fighter of almost everyone else: CROSS FUCKING TEKKEN! I mean, it has flaws, the scenarios could be shorter and the gem system could've been done differently, but on top of that, if a great footsie game, and I love how the Tekken characters play, mixing strings into chains and canceling into specials and stuff...it's so good. I can understand why people hate it, but I love it.
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? What are your least favorite and why?
MMy favourite is the parry system. It's so simple, yet so smart! A good read can change the flow of a match entirely. And a special mention to HD combos from KOFXIII, that, for me, it's the perfect comeback mechanic. You can do a shit ton of damage with it, but it's HARD to do the full HD combo consistently.

My least favourite is an easy question: TAC's. It's so fucking stupid! I mean, I remember when I first played MvC3 a month after it's release and I was loving to press up to chance my character mid-combo and keep the ABC chain, but after understanding the game more deeply I understood that a low risk/fucking high reward mechanic will never do good to a fighter.
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?
Back in the 90's some video renting stores had a few stations with SNES's and MegaDrive's that we could play for a buck an hour. Me and my brother played MKII there all the time, until we got a SNES! Duuude, it was a dream, then we got SFII (champions edition IIRC) and I loved it as well, but all the cool kids in the neighbourhood were playing the brand new UMK3.

The problem was back then the struggle was real. I obviously didn't had money to buy a game, and my parents thought those games were too real for their 12 year old kid, so I had to grind in my friend's house. Eventually I got really good at it, then another friend called me out: "my father is the best, I doubt you could ever beat him!".

So that Sunday I went to his house and meet his father: a 30-ish yo guy who probably had drugs that morning. Then I proceed to beat his ass with my Striker! Then I had to run as fast as I could 'cause that guy was MAD at me.

I mostly play fighters, but I also love to play FIFA, racing games and classic platformers.
What is your favorite fighting game character and why?
Bison. He's the dictator, he's Raul Julia, he's awesome! I love his movelist, it's very unique. You'll never be low tier to me baby
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
I try to be as offensive as I can be, putting the opponent in situations were if he don't make the right choice he'll be there getting mauled for some time.

I mostly play online, only have one fried that loves fighters as much as I do.
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player?
I can understand mid-game the opponent's habits, what they usually do in certain situations. But still, I have a hard time reacting accordantly.

My biggest weakness is definitely being able to do hard combos on training mode and almost never in actual matches! Holy shit that's so frustrating.
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career?
Well, I have a close friend who started me in competitive fighting games, he was the one who told me to search for "daigo parry" on Kazaa in 2005 to watch the moment that changed the way I look at games forever, and he was also the one who linked me to LevelUp's justin.tv channel to watch the very first WNF with MvC3, back in February 2011. And he was my demon for the longest time, could never beat him. When AE arrived, I picked E. Ryu and started to grind everyday, playing online and training mode for hours. Then I started to beat him sometimes. A few months later I was kicking his ass! In both SFIV and SFxT. This feeling of finally beating my demon was my best moment.

The worst was going 0-2 in the first tournament I entered. And that close friend I mentioned above also went 0-2, so I was like holy shit, my demon is as ass as me! Big turn off for me, still a cool experience tho.
What do you want from future fighting games?
I want better tutorials and better training modes. I know developers are already stepping it up on training modes (the UNiEL's one is awesome), but tutorials...not so much.
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?
TheChits. If he done it already, then sixteen-bit.

On GAF we have various members that stream fighting games from time to time too. If you would like to add your channel to this thread, send me a PM.
Additionally, if you want to really get involved, you may want to check out the various OTs for specific games:

Often, some fighting games can seem intimidating to players new and old. Below are a bunch of resources that may be of aid to new players, or handy as references.
  • Learn How To Play Fighting Games Free eBook from Shoryuken is a fantastic primer for new players to the genre.
  • Footsies Handbook is a guide to the potentially elusive, but integral part of doing well in any fighting game.
  • Step Up Your Game is an editorial series by Justin Wong that covers a multitude of topics, notably focusing on strengthening your mental game and playing smarter instead of harder.
  • Tips for first time competitors will help you straighten out those nerves and expectations when you head out to your first tournament.
  • Domination 101 is almost a cult classic article in the FGC, which has Seth Killian telling us how he really feels about the idea of "cheapness" in fighting games.
  • Shoryuken's Fighting Game Wiki is a great, multi-game reference for detailed information about mechanics and specific characters.
  • Team-building Guide by our very own Karsticles, which helps make it easier to approach team-building in MvC games, and games with similar synergistic elements.
GAF isn't the only FG community in town though. Here are a whole bunch of other FG communities across the internet that may be of interest:
  • 8WayRun - Soul Calibur franchise community
  • DOACentral - Dead or Alive franchise community
  • Dream Cancel - King of Fighters franchise community and resource, more US-centric

So fucking hype for Smash 3DS. Hopefully unlocking characters won't be so tedious.

Though I recently had to unlock all stages for Melee again to bring over to a friend's place....using that using Master Hand glitch to make Event 51 and 15 Man Melee brainless is pretty awesome (not that Down+B spam with DK isn't brainless, but this way I can just leave the game on)

Despite Sakurai's terrible philosophy, I'm gonna enjoy Smash. I loved Brawl so I probably will love this as well. Not getting on 3DS, though. Will wait for Wii U version.

Im using the 3ds version as my measuring stick for the game. Because if I do get it for Wii U gonna end up going all in on the 100 buck version

Dat banner is the stuff of legends. Bravo.

I still wanna know what the WiiU version of Smash is going to have in the place of Smash Run.

Wish Smash Run had you start off as like a Mii Fighter or something and you switched to other characters that you'd find in the arena. Part of the fun of City Trial was the awfulness of the Compact Star and the coin flip you'd have to make when encountering a new boat.

I never looked at Smash as a competitive game so it doesn't bother me how Sakurai feels and does with it. I always played them as the developer intended them to be. The upcoming game is going to turn off a lot of competitive Smash players but I don't think Nintendo nor Sakurai cares as it will still sell truckloads and the majority of gamers will still enjoy it for what it is.

Reading a NY Times article and this bit made laugh:

The roots of e-sports trace to the 1990s with the advent of fighting and shooter games like Street Fighter and Doom. Tournaments in those days were humble affairs, held in crowded hotel ballrooms in front of a few hundred people. Even the winning players often lost money after travel and hotel bills.

That's still us! Stop talking about us like we're not around anymore, damn you!

Ah. I can't play Smash with anything other than the Gamecube controller. I don't know what I would have done if they hadn't announced that gamecube controller port for Wii U.

I was able to play brawl decently with the classic controller. Actually I had an easier time doing Pikachu's quick attack cancels with it even xD

I tested Brawl with one of those. It's definitely playable but I still didn't feel as comfortable as I did with GC controller, haha.

Yeah, that is a problem. I have like three GC controllers I can't use b/c the analog stick is all funky.
