I know the one big question many GTA fans are waiting for me to answer right now: is GTA 5 on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One worth buying again, for a full $60, if you already own it on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360? Sadly, that’s not a question any reviewer can answer for you. If you already own GTA 5, you’re the only one who can decide whether a prettier, better-performing version of the same game is worth paying for twice, and whether you even have enough HDMI ports on your TV to support keeping your old-gen console plugged in to go back and play the old version. You have to ask yourself if that experience is one you’d want to repeat, or if you’d rather move onto one of the many new games that’ve come out since.

  • First-person doesn't work so well for vehicles

If the somewhat pat dialogue, misogynistic leads, poor representations of women and frequent hard violence didn't appeal before, they won't now. But while nothing has changed in the story these characters tell in cutscenes, the new tech has changed a lot about the story you make out of them.

In Short: An incredibly ambitious upgrade that not only improves the visuals and gameplay but, through the new first person view, offers a new way to play the best GTA ever.

Pros: Amazing next gen visuals and incredible attention to detail. New first person view works very well and is fully customisable. GTA Online is available from day one and looks just as good.

Cons: The story is as vague and meandering as ever, with not a single virtuous character in the whole cast. Gunplay and driving could still be better, and first person view doesn’t work in every situation.

While the narrative leaves a bit to be desired, Grand Theft Auto V on the PlayStation 4 is a technical marvel, a masterclass in world building, and absolutely worth exploring again.

Everybody, from those who have spent the better part of the past year exploring everything its world has to offer to the three people who have yet to play it, should experience what has been put together here.

Rockstar Games revisits last year's heist-filled romp with a new version on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. With the new power, the developer has added more depth and life to the world of Los Santos. It's the same game, but the new visual effects and first-person mode provides a strong experience. It's not completely worth a double-dip if you tore through the original GTA V, but it's definitely worth a second look.

First-person doesn't work so well for vehicles

Huh... how did they get that bit wrong?

EDIT - seemingly, it's not really "wrong" as much as it's a little too twitchy for first person, and certain missions are more difficult in that mode.

Car cockpit views doesn't work well in any game on conventional displays really (in VR it's perfect, on a monitor not so much), so I was already planning to do my driving in third person and go through the rest of the game in first person.

I guess frame drops are inevitable in games like this, but hopefully it's better than PS3. That's enough for me @ 1080p.

The hero Los Santos deserves
I'd like to see a Digital Foundry analysis on these frame-rate drops.

Same.

I never noticed any performance issues when I watched dozens of streams. Mostly it was the stream itself that was lagging behind or something. I'll remain skeptical until I see more reports about this. .

Pro: Awesome first person mode you guys, it works REALLY well

Con: First person mode doesn't always work well

10/10, perfect!!

I know, hence why 10/10 scores should not be used.

That makes no sense. Not using the highest score on the scale would just turn the next score down, in this case a 9, into the new "perfect score."

A 10/10 simply means its the best game doing what it does at that particular moment in time, in that particular reviewer's opinion.

What's with this new 'review in progress' trend? I think the first time I saw it was a few weeks ago and it seems to be catching on.

I don't this like this part at all. The reason why I wanna jump into the next-gen version is because I just wanna drive around in first person mode.

What's up with the "review in-progress" that's been popping up lately?

Anyway, can't say I'm surprised with the positive feedback. A little interested to see how bad the frame drops are.

Hold your swamp rats there, Darth. If they are taking a slight slow down after you drove a semi into a train as 15 cops all crash into you and you simultaneously jumping out of the truck and shooting a rocket launcher them I'm ok with that.

If it's locked 30 99.9% of the time and in 1080p its going to feel like space magic after playing Unity.

Calm down, opinions on GTA physics/driving are always so divisive... I would really wait for more impressions or try for yourself.

Anyone saying a 10 does not mean perfection... what are you on about?

A 9.9 doesn't mean perfection, a 10 DOES.
No discussion possible, that's how it is.

Reviews can be such a joke.

Review in progress lets sites have their cake and eat it too. Clicks when the embargo breaks so that readers don't go to competitor sites, while still getting plenty of time to do a real review so they don't get criticized for rushed review plays.
