As written previously, the Wii will ship with a PowerPC 750GX CPU jointly developed between IBM and Nintendo. Nintendo says the codename of the processor is Broadway and was manufactured using a 90nm fabrication process. IBM claims the 750GX GPU is based on the 750FX processor designed by the company several years ago. The chip can run at frequencies up to 1.1GHz and includes a 4-way set-associative single core with 1MB L2 cache.

On Nintendo's official Wii hardware "specifications" page, the GPU of the console is listed as still being developed with ATI. Whether this means that the GPU is still being tuned or there was simply a grammatical error on the site is up in the air. Very little is known about the Wii's GPU, codenamed Hollywood except that it is part of ATI's R520 family.

The r520 bit seems to be their own speculation, and doesn't fit with the descriptions of power to date.

Keep in mind they don't actually provide any references. It's quite possibly just rubbish they've made up.

Another good question: probably only Nintendo worked on new specs and Third Parties on an Upper Gamecube: this could be a possibility !

Seriously, the games do look completely gimped.

Development kits must be (honestly) GameCube ones because we're not seeing the results yet at all.

Not 100%...

This is weird, I remember reading the Wii GPU was similar to a x1600 video card. Now its x1800, if this is true then that is pretty impressive.

And Mario Galaxy DOES look a lot better than the other games for some reason. I never thought Mario would be the title that impressed me most in that department.

For the last time people, the article provides NO REFERENCES. It's probably fiction.
 
Well Nintendo themselves have never usually been at the forefront of graphics. Zelda is a GC/Wii game, etc. Most of 3rd parties have been basically developing Xbox 1.5 type games with their GC development kits, etc.

Maybe, like others have said, Galaxy is running on true hardware, and the rest are not? In the Red steel update hands on, they said that the game was running on Gamecube hardware,and on a "target PC"

The ONLY specs released about these chips is that they are built on a 90nm process. I have no idea where they got their info about the 750GX and R520.

I mean, Mario looks really quite impressive, do we have anything else they've made that should look good, but doesn't?

looking at the baseball/tennis games, its obvious they could've easily replaced those characters with high poly Mario characters. But they didn't. They want the focus to be on the controls, and how new the controls are. Better graphics will come later (I hope).

The GPU bit seems speculation indeed and they don't say the chip in the Wii runs at 1.1 Ghz, just that it could. There could very well be a lower clocked version in Wii for lower temperature or so?
 
There are no Wii specs in the thread. Just speculation. Also, upto isn't the same as equals.

Anyone expecting and X1800 (the ~equivalent of a PS3 or 360 GPU) is insane.

Makes perfect sense that it can throttle CPU speed for standby (WiiConnect).
