Wii Specs!!!

Good point. Project Hammer and Rayman look really promising. What about Metroid Prime III ?
I don't know: perhaps it has been developed on Gamecube and only now they must make the next step with Wii.
Bah. Matt has said that what we have seen at the conference is far from the reality.
At the show, we will see sure what is the true potential of these games.

Yeah. It really doesnt make any sense. The graphics from half of the games look like Gamecube and then there's some that look like Xbox or better(still not up to PS3 & 360). It all goes back to Matt at IGN(yeah, I know what his popularity is around here :lol ) saying that only a few developers were getting final dev kits(and that was recently). Most still have pre-final dev kits(aka Gamecube dev kits). Didnt final dev kits just come out very recently? I remember Iwata saying that in an interview a month or so ago.....

I agree.

Many of the titles we saw looked they were running on Gamecubes. Some keep saying there is no difference between GC and Wii, but there clearly is. I'm not saying Wii is as good as 360 or PS3 (it isn't) but it's definitely closer to them than GC. I'm really happy with Project Hammer's and Rayman's graphics, I think they're great :)

I think final dev kits go out in June.

As for the GX, this: http://www.thalescomputers.com/documents/PowerEngine7-077-6e-0305.pdf seems to say that the 750GX operates at up to 1GHz...

I've read all of those documents.

Now you need to read the errata on the 750GX, page 18 to be exact. (And I was wrong, it's 913Mhz, not 933Mhz. Above that and internal timings b0rks up some instructions)

The IBM 750GX RISC Microprocessor is targeted for high performance, low power systems

Marketing fluff. :) "High preformance" is only relevant when limiting yourself to factoring in embedded CPUs (and forgetting the competition).

I didn't want to start a new topic for this, since the search is down and I can't see if there was already a topic on it, but are there any pictures of the Wii remote sensor itself? I was just curious as to how big the thing is, and how it connects to the console.

Also, has there been any elaboration as to how the remote is calibrated to the screen? I'd imagine it would be something like calibrating a touchscreen, as in pointing the remote at certain points on your screen (corners or floating targets) rather than touching them, and then hopefully such settings are saved to the Wii's flash memory.

The last playable builds of the demo must have been on the GC+wand dev kits.

Companies only recently got the final dev kits. It'll take time before they have their demos working on them. Right now they can probably produce those graphics we have seen in movies, but the playable demos must not be up to snuff yet.

the biggest offender to me was metroid prime 3. one of the best looking gc titles, from an amazingly talented team, but the wii version looks the same:

It's the art that makes Metroid look poor! After the first Metroid Prime, Retro lost a ton of artists and it REALLY showed in Echoes and indeed this new title. Just looks very bland compared to the vibrant world in the original and the generic character designs are just sad.

The first Prime tried so hard to stay truthful to the original, but the games are becoming more and more like a generic FPS with no style or class! Shame.

u suck. =_(

I don't really see why people are complaining over the visuals. Isn't a known fact that these games are only running on Pre-Final Kits with only a select few running on final hardware? I'd say Mario is one of the games running on the final hardware since it looks so nice..

Keep checking people. Infact, I think everyone at GAF should buy a home test kit. You may all have a little Korean in you.

IT'S INEBITIBLY INEBITABLE!

You know, they should reverse these. Show the actual game in the big screen, and the people playing in the little screen...

Tiny screenshots ftl.

Perhaps there's a message in that choice of layout? ;-)

If the "generic character designs" you're referring to are the Space Pirates, they're more faithful to the original designs than Prime's were. The one in that screenshot is the closest yet.

So what the heck are most of these games running on? The graphics vary so much :lol

The IGN Red Steel report says that they had two versions, one running on GC, one running on a target PC. I get the feeling that's what you'll be seeing with most games, either GC hardware, or target specs.

Hopefully the inclusion of a 16:9 tv in that photo is significant. I can cope with 480p as long as it's widescreen.
practicaly every Wii game outside of Wario Ware, even those from Nintendo in house devs, have been shown in widescreen. Even the Wii version of zelda runs in widescreen, thats why its all stretched out in the press conference video, because they kept it on a 4x3 screen. I think at this point, at least Nintendo realizes that widescreen is at least going to be popular enough to include, even if they can't do full 720/1080 HD.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't they just loose one artist between prime 1 and 2. And besides, Andrew Jones art is better anyway

Well, widescreen is set as both Mario and Zelda were shown, and the second confirmed to be, in that format.

FWIW, the PPC 750FX was in the old Apple iBooks. It's a PPC G3 chip used for laptops. It topped out at 900Mhz in 2003 (when Apple switched iBook chips). So I'm sure 1.1Ghz is about right where they would have taken the chip. It should be a very cheap chip given how old the architecture is (came out in 2002).

What are you smoking? Echoes destroyed Prime in the art department. Andrew Jones did the art for both games.

Also, people aren't taking that fact that part of the CPU load is going towards movement detection which does leave much room for other things.

They probably go about developing the games a little bit differently that usual.

The controls and fluidity of the controls with the gameplay comes first, then the fine-tuned graphical coat. I think Prime 3 will look fabulous when it hits next year, and for now its more or less just a lot of Prime 1 and 2 placeholders.

What the hell are you talking about? Metroid Prime 1 looked great, but it did that whole 'forest, fire, snow, sand' setup with the worlds. Prime 2 had an incredible art direction that was really out of this world. It was unsettling to say the least, seeing Samus in that aged suit in a world of distruction and chaos.

Prime 3 looks GOOD because it has such a good art direction and attention to detail. It doesn't look GREAT yet because they havn't thrown in all those nex-gen effects.

Man Nintendo have a lot of explaining to do...

Is it possible Retro Studio's don't have the same kit that Red-Steel has been developed on? Meaning they are developing Metroid 3 with GCN dev-kits?

3 possibilities.

1) They are using GC Turbo dev kits still.

2) They have final dev kits, but are aiming on making the game "feel" perfect before going and creating the content.

3) This is final.

Looking at SMG, and especially Sonic Wild Fire in motion, I wouldn't be surprised if these specs turned out to be true.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but...I'm fairly certain now that the "Broadway" is a G5.

Firstly Nintendo's press release on specs say the Broadway is a 90nm...and we know it's a PowerPC chip...Now the first PowerPC chip IBM produced using the 90 nanometer process was the G5.

Someone posted the following link on the IGN message board...

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060520-6877.html

At the time of The Switch, Apple was entertaining a plethora of very attractive but unreleased and completely unproven PPC options. IBM had offered them Cell on the desktop and Broadway (the Wii processor) in their laptop line.

If the above is true...IBM wouldn't offer Apple a G4 derivative...or would they? They would have surely offered Apple a G5 derivative? And if they haven't...then...the real question would be....has IBM retro-fitted 90nm on to a G4...?

Or am I missing something here...?

I probably am...since if the Wii is running a G5 then that would surely make much much more powerful then the rumoured 2-3 times more powerful then the GCN...we would be takling atleast 6 times more powerful.

It's a custom chip. It isn't part of the G series, it's based on powerpc architecture but it's really a custom chip in the end.

Yeah I know it's a custom PPC but wasn't the "Gekko"another custom chip based on the G3 in essence but with VMX/Altivec which no G3 had?

Ah well...I guess there won't be long to go till Nintendo do release specs...it's just a shame Nintendo feel the need to spec dodge...it's so silly...grrrrr!!!

Nintendo will never release the official specs. It'll only come out when the Wii is taken apart by someone and post pics of the chips/parts on the internet.

If Mario Galaxy is running of near final hardware and not GameCube dev kits r520 wouldn't be a surprise at all. Did anyone get a look at the roundness of the platforms or the texture effects on olimar's ship?

In fact, I think Nintendo has lowered expectations to a point where anything they do now in terms of the graphic hardware will probably surprise a lot of people.
