Wii Specs!!!

There really are no hi rez screen shots out yet. Is E3 over BTW??? anymore info?

Shog...you're third prediction was hardly a difficult one to make. Anyone with a brain knew that. :lol

ATI's R520 family

Technically there is no "R520 family" is there? If its a 520 chip then its an X1800. But if they mean family as in ATI's lower end derivatives of the base architecture, then its probably an X1600 or more likely an X1300.

edit- oops already beaten to it

You know, they should reverse these. Show the actual game in the big screen, and the people playing in the little screen...

Tiny screenshots ftl.

Apparently those "brain enabled" folks were in short supply at GAF!

Here's WHY that information is false:

1. They confuse CPU and GPU. Very professional.
2. The 750GX has existed since 2003. Nintendo didn't co-develop it.
3. The 750GX operates at frequencies between 733MHz-1.0GHz. If the Wii is running a 750GX, it will almost be definitely running at the former frequency rather than the latter. Nintendo cheaped out on power this time around. Deal with it.

I think the crap graphics are because nintendo just tossed some stuff together quickly to give them some content for E3. As for 3rd party stuff like tony hawk well you have to remember very few devs were making software for the console a couple months back. I have a feeling the rev launch line up will be filled with a few gens and tons of crap.

Rev/Wii specs speculation: PPC 750GX and X1300Pro - RIGHT ON THE MONEY
PS3 casing: Needs more vents and bigger size! - NOSTROFUCKINGDOMUS
X360 will compete with PS3 toe to toe: SIXTH SENTHASTIC

WHY AM I SO FUCKING GOOD?!?!

Please ,have my kids!!

Anyway, it´s pretty obvious that the Wii Sports game was very underpowered on the technical side so they could focus on the controller...

Boo...someone closed my thread. Anyone else think Nintendo is shocked at Sony's pricepoint and is probably kicking themselves for not going Xbox 360 power + the wagglewand. They could have sold it at $300-350 and STILL been twice as cheap as Sony.

Well, I do know one thing. The whole Wii specs has been under wraps for a long time now. Until VERY recently, it was being said that developers were only using Gamecube development kits. But it's weird. When you look at Super Mario Galaxy and even some parts of Zelda, it completely blows away some of the other demos and games shown.

It's like only a few people have actually worked a long time on development, and the rest was recent

The cheaper the better. Even if they knew I´m very glad that the Wii is cheap and it looks just as good as I though.

I'm inclined to agree that there's a little more meat to the Wii specs than we think, especially after seeing IGN's higher res Red Steel direct feed. The GI article indicated that Ubi has been receiving dev kits earlier than most other developers, and I think that it shows. Obviously no PS3 or 360, but still noticeably better than a current gen system.

An x1800? No way in hell. That;s a top of the line card right now. Im doubting whats in the wii is even x800 standards. At sd res, those cards would be able to produce a hell of alot.

Id be pleasantly surprised if true, but all the evidence points otherwise.

Keep checking people. Infact, I think everyone at GAF should buy a home test kit. You may all have a little Korean in you.
and i thought that rumbling noise was coming from a big mac

Who was it here running word of final kits in June?

I believe it was in response to rumors that the machine would release in July / The Summer -- a rebuke if you will

There are larger versions, but it still doesn't give a very clear shot. In the larger version of that SMG picture, if you crop it down to just the actual screenshot part, it's 736x456. The only one that seems to be really clear is Metroid Prime 3, which crops down to 640x448... with a human leg still in the corner.

Maybe Fire Emblem wasn't CG at all. :O

Most of that trailer surely was CG, the style matches Path of Radiance's CGs perfectly.

The very first scene, before they suddenly changed the camera without any kind of transition to a close up of Sothe kicking some random soldier, might be in game, or they just got some crappy CG director :(

ATI will be answering question about the Wii's ATI chip at E3. I've set up an appointment for such a meeting. We'll have answers soon enough.

One thing that does make me wonder though is if the chipset is just a slightly overclocked GCN .... then why doesn't Nintendo have 100% finalized dev kits out?

This makes ZERO SENSE.

How can Tony Hawk look like ASS, and Mario Galaxy look spectacular?

WTF is going on here. R520 Makes NO sense AT ALL.
good console specs don't magically make games with high-poly models, high-res textures, and advanced lightning and shader effects. If the developer doesn't put the effort in, the game's graphics will reflect that.

a console's specs are as only as good as the developer that uses them.

if you're seriously getting angry you should probably find a new hobby.

An x1800 and it's fan would barely fit into the Wii shell. No way. And I don't mean to hate on the Wii, b/c it is not about grpahics. But this XBOX 1.5 is nonsense. Nothing I saw today looked as good as SC: CT on XBOX.

A game cube game like Zelda is almost 360 niveau. :D

Here is a thought. Maybe Nintendo was waiting on PS3 pricepoint announcement before they finalized the architecture? This could also explain why they chose not to reveal a price just yet even though EGM clearly stated they were told it was 250 before. Like I said just a thought. A poor delusional thought.

One thing is certain, Mario Galaxy and the IGN Red Steel videos look much better than everything else shown.

yeah that red steel hd video on ign looks way better then the demo did, and he's playing exactly the same areas...

Thank you. Please make a new thread when you get them. Pretty irrelevant either way, but lets let the speculation end.

Anyone else find it hard to believe the Wii will be a quiet machine, or will magically have more holes punched out like the PS3?

Edwood_WiillyWoud_01.jpg

Wii's going to be Wii-lly Loud, Wii-lly hot, or both.

Or perhaps just Wii-lly underpowered so it's not hot at all.

And while I'm still at it:

"a 4-way set-associative single core with 1MB L2 cache"

should read,

"a single core with a 4-way set-associative 1MB L2 cache"

And it won't be a pure GX, but a chips built around it.

...

Yeah yeah, I'll leave now.

The CPU will dissapate close to nothing, and the GPU shouldn't be all THAT hot, noor will the mem. So no. And besides, it's propably allready been modified (the latest pictures makes it out to be a little wider then the original designs IMO).

(regarding my above post, oops)

I also think that it would be possible, if it were true, we may have a downclocked R520 based processor. I'd imagine that R520 is more a tag of the featureset of the processor (pixel pipelines, shader model, etc) rather than anything else.

As for the GX, this: http://www.thalescomputers.com/documents/PowerEngine7-077-6e-0305.pdf seems to say that the 750GX operates at up to 1GHz...

Edit:

This PDF from IBM also has good info: http://www-306.ibm.com/chips/techlib/techlib.nsf/techdocs/FA2D14C0DF9DB64A87256FE4005B2B90/$file/750GX_dd1_2_%204-14-05Pd_ppt.pdf

It derates the speed of the processor based on voltage ("undervolting"), which fits with Nintendo's WiiConnect model (P18). It does indeed support 1GHz.

Another IBM PDF: http://www-306.ibm.com/chips/techlib/techlib.nsf/techdocs/4D86B2273E8218CE87256E660058763D/$file/750GX_ds9-2-05.pdf
The IBM 750GX RISC Microprocessor is targeted for high performance, low power systems

i think many people are wondering why some wii games look like gc and others look better and pretty impressive.

the biggest offender to me was metroid prime 3. one of the best looking gc titles, from an amazingly talented team, but the wii version looks the same:

lifestyle_ss_metroid.png

yet other games like project hammer and rayman look far more impressive:
