Wii Specs!!!

Here is my question. Since broadway is appart of the g5 line of processors from ibm, would the higher clock rate effect how much heat is being generated? It says the highest it can reach is 1.1ghz, but why would nintendo care if it can reach the highest point since they know people will purchase the wii for the controler set up instead of gfx?

Was it really? I could have sworn that it wasn't until the 14th. It didn't seem that long ago.

Yes, the press conference was the Sunday after E3.

If Mario Galaxy is running of near final hardware and not GameCube dev kits r520 wouldn't be a surprise at all. Did anyone get a look at the roundness of the platforms or the texture effects on olimar's ship?

In fact, I think Nintendo has lowered expectations to a point where anything they do now in terms of the graphic hardware will probably surprise a lot of people.
that is so true,

also check these chips out, looks inline to what hollywood is in terms pf power consumption and clock speed.

I'm really surprised that more developers aren't talking now that E3 has come and gone.

still knowing the specs wouldnt hurt especially if they are better than a gamecubes.

if nintendo releases a gamecube for 200 dollars its bad for them
if nintendo releases a gamecube+++ when everyone is like "omg its a gamecube" its bad for them.

just spill the beans!

The G5 can run higher then 1.1Ghz...much higher.

Anyways...after doing a bit of digging around I found that IBM had 90nm for the G4 in the 7448...

So we're back to square one...because the Broadway could well be a G4...

To answer your question...Nintendo wouldn't go for the highest running clock-speed CPU...they'll look for something that fits their requirements for heat and power consumption and cost...and allows Nintendo to offer a balanced system without waste of any sort. Nintendo is looking for efficiency in all components...

Interesting enough IBM would have liked to have offered Nintendo a slightly better CPU then the Gekko...at the same price as they were offering for the Gekko...but because ArtX/ATI couldn't in the short-space of time have offered something to balance the system out again without inefficiency and waste happening...Nintendo turned down the offer.:lol

Anyways...If I was a betting man I would put the Broadway at roughly between 1.1Ghz to 1.6Ghz...the IGN specs...were very very early dev-kits...and Nintendo has only recently released anything higher then that to any other developers including Ubisoft. According to them they only had 2 weeks prior to E3 to port Red-Steel to the newly released kits.

Thus why Mario seems to be the only stand-out title graphically...

The IGN specs were from documentation with early kits, telling what to expect from the final hardware.

I can see the Wii with a ~1GHz 750GX/G5 derivative and a X1300/X1600 based GPU at ~300MHz.

I would be VERY satisfied with an X1600. That would destroy the GC hardware in terms of capabilities, anyway.

The X1300 though... thats almost like integrated gfx.

QFT

That's the way ign explained it anyway... It's supposedly not the specs from the dev kit, they are target specs nintendo gave developers to aim for. Presumably, the dev kits would be weaker... probably just GC's with more ram, since the difference in specs is small enough not to justify incremental chip's and such. they are probably using GC chips until the real ones are finalized.

Listen punchy, you're about a year too late with that. I called dibs WAY before you!

It would be rediculous to marry a 300MHz X1600 with 1GHz anything. It's gonna be more like X1300.

Where could i see pics of whats possible with a X1600? I have been googling and i cant find enything :(

thanks

Dudes, the IGN specs are the FINAL SPECS. I thought graphics didn't matter, anyhow?

They don't...but there is nothing wrong with speculating on possibly slightly better spec hen there is reason to...even if the IGN specs are final then it's still alright...Mario Galaxy being a good benchmark currently for what I would consider really really nice...I also quite like the look of Elebits...:)

As for documentation being proof...I dunno...depends how Nintendo have gone about with the development of their chips for the Wii...It's obvious they told developers what to aim for but Nintendo could have or is waiting till the very last-minute to make any decison...

I would love to know which developer spilled the beans to IGN...and why they would risk being put on the notorious "ban for life" list. That said...Nintendo's press release after IGN posted the article seems to back the claim that they might well have posted the right specs and Nintendo tried to squash the specs claim. :D

GPU in Lindburgh used for say VF5 is about the same overall power and features as X1600Pro/XT IIRC. Of course the latest 3GHz P4 used in Lindburgh is way more powerful than a 1GHz PPC750GX.

If the Hollywood was X1600 based...that would mean it is Shader Model 3 compatible...which as far as I have heard the Hollywood isn't SM 3 compatible and infact has no new pixel pipeline.

That's if you believe IGN that is...and the rumours.

Rev/Wii specs speculation: PPC 750GX and X1300Pro - RIGHT ON THE MONEY
PS3 casing: Needs more vents and bigger size! - NOSTROFUCKINGDOMUS
X360 will compete with PS3 toe to toe: SIXTH SENTHASTIC

WHY AM I SO FUCKING GOOD?!?!

:lol :lol Ever since the TD: LeMans 60fps fiasco, I've always wondered just that.

I do believe that in my HG report, MH never guarenteed 60fps for final game (that's why I asked if they will keep the game 60fps since I saw slowdowns). They said they will try their damnest (which I guess has it's limits!) to keep it.

And if TD:LM for DC @ 30fps is a fiasco, I want more fiascos!

I don't think it's based on a PC part. There is an interview with ATI saying that.
Anyway, is the GC backwards compatibility hardware based or emu? If it is hardware, then clearly Hollywood is an evolution of Flipper.

Heh I was just busting balls. I loved that report. :) (btw, I used to be dee over at HG)

For what I know, it's hardware-based. I don't know how much power would be needed to emulate it, otherwise. But since Wii's going to share the same architecture...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but...I'm fairly certain now that the "Broadway" is a G5.

Firstly Nintendo's press release on specs say the Broadway is a 90nm...and we know it's a PowerPC chip...Now the first PowerPC chip IBM produced using the 90 nanometer process was the G5.

Someone posted the following link on the IGN message board...

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060520-6877.html

If the above is true...IBM wouldn't offer Apple a G4 derivative...or would they? They would have surely offered Apple a G5 derivative? And if they haven't...then...the real question would be....has IBM retro-fitted 90nm on to a G4...?

Or am I missing something here...?

I probably am...since if the Wii is running a G5 then that would surely make much much more powerful then the rumoured 2-3 times more powerful then the GCN...we would be takling atleast 6 times more powerful.

It's a G3. The 750 series is a G3. The 9XX series are G5's. If the OP is to be believed then it is a G3 derivative chip.

IBM never manufactured G4's, Freescale does. So it's not a G4 chip (which is the 7XXX series).

So most likely it's a G3.

There are no Wii specs in the thread. Just speculation. Also, upto isn't the same as equals.

Anyone expecting and X1800 (the ~equivalent of a PS3 or 360 GPU) is insane.

Its not the GPU alone that makes the amazing graphics, its the amount of RAM that they supply for the GPU to use while its rendering.

While the demos shown at E3 were nice... they weren't beyond anything on the current generation of consoles. Perhaps even slightly behind. Even the most impressive Wii demos (Zelda and Red Steel) are clearly capable on this-generation consoles.

Nintendo has stated time and time again that the console is not next generation in terms of graphics. At that point of the lifetime of the console (the wii specs were leaked to IGN ~5 months Pre-launch) even the rushed X360 had a dev kit that matched the final console quite closely, although it had more RAM, so at the very least I'd say the leaked IGN specs had quite a bit of an inkling of truth, sprinkled with a little bit of extra RAM for dev headspace, most likely.

I guess you didn't play Mario Galaxy. And Zelda was OBVIOUSLY a GameCube game because it was developed for the GameCube.
