A Hat in Time Kickstarter. Wind Waker-styled 3D platformer, PC/Mac/possibly Wii U

The Kickstarter is now over and ended at $296,340, almost ten times the amount they originally asked for. If all goes well we'll be playing this in about 6 months from now.

I whinny my fervor lowly, for his length is not as great as those of the Hylian war stallions

I would not expect it that soon considering the amount of extra content they now need to make, hehe.

I need this game on my PS4.

Sorry to bump this, but has anyone who backed this received the questionnaire for receiving your rewards?

Tomorrow the Alpha build for preorderers. Apparently KS backers (the $70 tier) won't get the alpha just yet:

Hey everyone,

Two weeks ago we reported that there might be a potential delay in the Alpha release specifically for Kickstarter backers, due to some issues outside our control. We are working towards resolving these issues, but it is very uncertain at the moment when exactly they will be.

We want to express that we are very sad that this is something we have to relay; if it were up to us, we would send you all a copy right away. We really really want to.

We have chosen not to delay the global alpha release (Feb 20th) as there is no set date for when this Kickstarter issue will be resolved, and as such, would be difficult to re-schedule a new release date. We will let you know here on Kickstarter when the issue has been resolved (and you will receive your copy straight away once that happens).

We are a young company, and everything outside of game development is new to us, please excuse this bump in the road.
We will let you know here on Kickstarter when the issue has been resolved (and you will receive your copy straight away once that happens). Please try to be patient, we are working immensely hard behind the scenes to get this resolved.

We will let you know if any action is required on your part,

Regards,
Gears for Breakfast

A Hat in Time is a 3D collect-a-thon platformer...

ick... gross. I thought we as a gaming collective had moved beyond collecting for the sake of progression in video games. There is a reason why Star Fox Adventures bombed, and it wasn't because of the license like some people would have you believe.

Every game made by Ubisoft in the past 3 years invalidates your argument.

This is really grinding my gears, especially because they won't give us backers a darn answer as to why we don't get the alpha tomorrow. I tweeted at them and have commented on the update page, but they refuse to answer my and other backers' questions.

Collecting items is just an excuse for gameplay opportunities, these can include obstacle course style platforming challenges or puzzle solving.

Think of it as collecting the star coins in Mario, they usually involve exploring the game's mechanics with brilliant ideas.

It all depends on the execution (variety, polish, level design), nothing inherently wrong with the genre.

So let's get this straight.

Backers backed this Kickstarter months and months in advance, paying more than what the "global preorders" pay now.

So basically we paid more, paid earlier, and our reward for that is our alpha is [most likely] delayed whereas people who didn't fund the game, paid less and at a later date get the alpha tomorrow?

What the heck?

To make matters worse we're not even being told why this is due to "legal reasons" which honestly, I don't see what could possibly be the case here.

Wait, so can I back this right now and get the game tomorrow? :D

Platformer is the operative word

I don't see any reason why they wouldn't give early backers the alpha on time, unless there was an issue. It is frustrating, but I think they must have a good reason they are doing what they are doing.

New update:

Hey everyone,

A few days ago we had to relay the news that the alpha build might've been delayed specifically for Kickstarter backers. This was a very sour message to relay for us, because we're naturally interested in showing our progress, and you, the backers, are naturally interested in playing what we have to show.

We would like to fully explain what the issue that is causing the delay is, but at this stage, we are unable to do so due to legal reasons. We will absolutely go into great detail about what the issue has been once it has been resolved, in particular so that any future Kickstarter projects can avoid a similar situation.

Our project is a role model to a lot of fresh Kickstarter projects, and with this comes the responsibility to share our knowledge from the Kickstarter. This is something we will never forget.

We have made progress with this issue to the point where we may be able to provide the Alpha Build around the same time as the worldwide release. This is not a promise, but it is a hope. We see a possibility to make a breakthrough in the issue over the next 48 hours, and if so, we will hit the launch switch as fast as we possibly can.

We may be slow to post it here if a breakthrough occurs, as we will be in the office all day working intensively on this issue as well as securing a smooth Alpha launch, but if you receive the build in your email, then we have succeeded. If we do not succeed, we will naturally compensate for this when the Kickstarter build is released by including additional, exclusive alpha content.

We apologize for the uncertainty. We knew that this might come down to the wire and for that reason we chose not to delay the global release. We will let you know if any action is required on your part and we apologize for this bump in the road.

Best regards,
Gears for Breakfast

Star Fox Adventures "bombed" so hard that it sold 1.08 million copies combined in the US and Japan. Worldwide it's most likely well over 1.5 million. Stop trying to rewrite history.

2 keys for backers? Anyone willing to part with a spare? Maybe for something in return?

Sorry for being that guy

So far it's pretty fun, but when they say alpha, it's really an alpha. Glitches left and right, and the player movement seems a bit off, and the camera is not very friendly. The music is great so far though, and the game is pretty good looking.

Ahhh...

So what does it mean when you press play on Steam and it pops up that "Preparing to launch" window for a split second and then nothing happens?

So... No Wii U version then?

There are a few things that make having a Wii U version difficult, specifically that the Unreal Engine costs like half a mil to use on consoles. They would either need to get the funding to use it or need a publisher/developer who already has the rights to use the Unreal Engine. They have been in talks, and they mention having something to say regarding it at some point...but we've gotten no confirmation since. The only words we've gotten from them regarding a Wii U version was a cryptic tweet in September about good news for the Wii U version...but the tweet has since been deleted and no news ever came.

The last tweet about it was on Feb 17 as a response saying "No confirmed Wii U version at this point I'm afraid." Combined with the deleted tweet hint from before, I suspect the developer/publisher they were almost complete with bailed out. :/

So, I'd say it is likely not coming to Wii U moreso than it will. There are just too many things going against it right now.

Try contacting the developer through Kickstarter or check the official forums. Again, I'm not familiar with these guys in particular but I've found other crowdfunded developers to be receptive to troubleshooting questions. You're basically their QA department, after all.
