Four feet isn't a massive distance to be sitting actually, especially with a 27" monitor. At least it's not as bad as Mitch's 6" comment, wow.

4-6 feet is what you sit at for a 42''. So yeah, it's actually pretty massive compared to the 2-3 feet most people sit from a 27''. The person I quoted mentioned nothing about factoring in viewing distance, which is why I mentioned it.
Then again, the IGN crew did not bother factoring in viewing distance either, and I guess they assumed everyone just sits at 8-10 feet away from every monitor or tv...

See i'm fine with game journalists not being totally versed in tech, I mean it's important but not that much so, but at least be aware of something as basic as game resolutions and what difference it can make. Hell not even games, they could go to any of their macs or personal computers and flick between all the different resolutions avaliable and see right there on the desktop what difference 1080p makes over 720.

No, I think you have to take it a step further.

For what possible reason would someone want to report something that they were told, without bothering to check to see if it were remotely true or not? An opinion is one thing, but for him to just flat out state it...

I believe that, if I said something that was wrong or even silly in here some fellow GAFfer would be sure to point me where I was wrong and to correct me with proper information. Than I would be happy because I would have learned something new.

hahaha GAF does not work this way.

...really?
Ugh, come on.
It's stuff like this that just bums me out.
Seriously, that's just being a pretentious jerk. :/

I regret giving them page views. Insulting your fan base is not the way to get anything done.

Yeah because it totally wasn't IGN that put out 3 minute video about these "throw away" comments.

It was IGN that put out this little snippet and titled it as so, not us.

The title of the podcast is "Does 900p vs. 1080p Really Matter?", a question they go on to suggest does from a consumer standpoint, and might not from a technical one. The former takes up the majority of that discussion, the latter all of what - 10 to 20 seconds?

Yo I'm 4ft away from a 46" LED and I can see the difference between 720 and 1080.

Damn site.

Ah, this is what everything was about. I saw one tweet while I was leaving the gym, but I lacked context. Good to know.

I notice the 720p to 1080p difference all the time because I switch between two TVs for my gaming.

How in the world this article got cleared is beyond reality. I can tell the difference between 1080p and 720p. On my tv (32in) alone looking at ghosts on both xbox and ps4 is like a night and day difference.

Wow that's a lot of ad hominem.
Quote the people that are making ad hominem arguments.

You won't find any, because I think you're mistaken. You think any insult is an ad hominem argument.

That is not the case, and if you re-read what an ad hominem argument is you will find out.

What is happening in this thread is that they are being called out for misinformation and are ALSO called idiots. The latter I don't agree with, but nobody is saying they are wrong BECAUSE they are idiots.

I don't know 'bout you guys but I wouldn't trust a guy with glasses talking about what the naked eye could do!

That tweet and this... incredible. Like that lady at evening on the corner of the street...
No amount of ecosystem would stop me if I had a capable rig, to play Titanfall on Xbox1. I want that fun game that's fun to also look as nice as possible. Hell if I had a capable rig even my PS4 would stop seeing as many multiplats.

One more step to the end of game journalists.

I think it is time for devs to judge, not gamers or fanboys.
I would read devs review on other dev's games.

I thought this was photoshopped and went to his twitter to confirm it...

It's actually true.

INCREDIBLE. What a complete joke in plain daylight.

EDIT: When someone asked about this not being ethical. He replied "I think you're looking too far into it. Do you think Aisha Tyler only plays Ubisoft games?"

Does Aisha Tyler actually work in a company that reviews games for Ubisoft? Is this guy actually admitting he doesn't care about ethics? This is the clearest case of someone offering his services to be bribed. Period.
I don't know if I should find it hilarious or sad that he doesn't even realize what went wrong there.

Can we already guess the score he will give to TitanFall? 10.9?

As for 720p and 1080p difference - my dad spotted it right away, when I played games in our living room in 720p and later bought my own 1080p TV. He just said 'now that is much clearer looking' and I told him about resolution differences :)

I am still guessing that IGN will have to come up with a new number to represent how amazing Titanfall is and add in a blowjob too.

Um... why?

Because it does us no good. If IGN gets a story before anyone, sure we can read it for the information. But when it comes to technical information such as resolution, frame rate, hardware analysis etc... there is no reason to look there.

If you are looking at IGN for technical console information, you probably don't know enough to even care if you can see a difference between 720p and 1080p.

I haven't been following this thread, but I guess that the press got something grossly wrong, refuse to admit their mistake, talked down to their readers, and are now patting each other on the back on Twitter?

yep, and instead of being concerned with what's really important (journalistic integrity, being able to admit they are wrong, able to apologize for things, etc.) they instead try to shift ridicule toward the party that pointed out the mistake in the first place. pretty fox new-ish to be honest.

it reminds me of when i was 19 and went with my gf's step brother to get some things from walmart. he grabbed a few sixers along with our snacks, and when we were at the checkout lane not only were we not carded (he was 22, but looked younger) but I WAS THE ONE paying for everything. we got half way to our place and realized that someone had swapped some of the beers in one of the six packs with something else. we turned around, came in, and asked if we could exchange it. they claimed that they couldn't because we could have just swapped them ourselves. we insisted they please help us out, but they actually got pretty forceful and asked us to leave. that's when i told them i was 19, didn't get carded, and paid for it all. they told me "that's impossible because we card EVERYONE". the manager then patted (not kidding) the cashier on the back and told her good job on following procedure and also for handling us properly... wow.

This. A thousand times this. I really don't get why the games journalism folk seem to have such animosity to the people they make content for. Yes there are some fuckwits out there who give you constant shit (deservedly at times) but don't paint us all with the same bloody brush!

The problem is that for all the internet is full of dimwits who can't rub two sticks together, that sit and throw garbage comments up, there are also people in gaming journalism that are insufferable because of basic human ego. They're "professionals" and if they allow that to go to their head, they develop a complex where they are of a superior quality to the dirty gaming poors.

I had the displeasure of knowing someone who merely interned on the production for some show on G4TV gaming back in its early days. They quickly turned into a complete prick. Who did in fact know very little but was convinced they were a genius because they had been deemed worthy of entering the glamorous professional world.

You end up with some who are so full of their position they both talk down to their audience and begin making the mistake of the ascended fanboy: making up random "facts" as gibber-jabber and then defending those with a lip-curling sneer. Hardly all gaming journalism is like this, but the ratio at times seems unsettlingly high. Enough to pretty easily give gaming journalism a bad name.

Arthur Gies, why the fuck do you always drag yourself into these stupid situations that literally have nothing to do with you.

To be fair, and maybe based on the timestamps I am incorrect, but he was brought in on this by someone tagging him on Twitter about it, as if he was part of it. For once, minus the shills comment, he hasn't really done anything absurd.

Pathetic.. Gaming deserves a better press.

I don't wish to be all philosophical here, but in the words of Terrance McKenna, "we are lead by the least among us", and that surely applies here with video game journalism.

It's become so commonplace i'm completely unaffected by it.

It's actually become quite amusing, always seeing the same people pop up when something like this happens.

Can the naked eye perceive a different between 30 frames per second and 60 frames per second? Because if multi-plats on the PS4 were set to run at 720p (like the bone), there would be a significant improvement in framerate over the xbox.

Even if you accept (and i don't) that the different between the image quality of 720p vs 1080p on a 50 inch tv is negligible, there is no way you can also claim not to see a difference in frame rate when comparing something like 30fps vs 60fps.

I would expect journo's and MS to make this claim about 720p not being a big deal IF the box was less expensive than the better performing competitor (PS4)... but its not... the weaker hardware cost $100 more.

How can anyone buy this garbage?
IGN is full of shit.

Ryan McCaffrey is no doubt a fanboy. He was a defender of the DRM policies on the Xbox podcast. Quote: "It's not a big deal".

Yeah, he was shilling and downplaying so damn much after the XBO reveal.

I remember they had some video inviting Xbox gamers to the show to discuss the new consoles and the conferences. The looks he gave anyone who dared express discontent with the XBO were murderous.
