I think these guys get way to much flak. They sometimes do say stupid things like this but I can tell its only to please the one minded folk that listen. They aren't some mindless Microsoft fanboys and they do have a lot of criticism about the xbox one, but that stuff doesn't get blown up. They say Microsoft screwed up power wise and will never be up to par with the ps4, but they say 900p should be the minimum. They even go as far to say why would someone with both consoles buy the xbox multiplat over the ps4 multiplat when one is native 1080 and one is upscaled. They compare the $499 price tag to the $399 and say it makes more sense for people to go with the ps4 when they can only get one.

Just my thought that they get quoted for the idiotic things they say, but I've listened to the majority of their podcasts and they do have valid criticisms about the xbox one and obviously they say positive things because that's their preference.

So these are the professionals? I can tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on little screenshots posted on GAF, easily.

I find it kinda funny that Polygon is saying we should have a choice coded within the game to choose what resolution we want (while also saying in their reviews that resolution doesn't affect gameplay so it doesn't really matter, thus games with higher resolutions getting the same score as the same game with a lower resolution), while IGN says that resolution doesn't matter unless you have a 50 inch TV or larger. Its like watching two monkeys trying to grab a football or something.

I could honestly hear the Benny Hill music playing in the background while reading the IGN and Polygon articles today.

Please tell me where I'm wrong (seriously) since my arguments (basically I can't see individual color dots at 1m from a 70") wouldn't allow me to see the difference between a 720p and 1080p movie at 3m distance (games is different as mentioned with aliasing....)
A pixel is made up of sub-pixels. Just because you can't see the sub-pixel, doesn't mean his pixel calculation is off.

Or did I misread your RGB (not yellow) thing?

Maybe if you are a blind dog.

Although 720p vs 1080p is not really the big issue here. It is the fact that many console games do not render at the accepted standard resolution for pretty much any TV you go buy today (1080p). If everyone still had 720p televisions, then sure 720 is fine. However, people have been buying 1080p sets for years and no matter how good your scaler is, it upscaled content looks noticeably worse than native content.

An even bigger insult is the 900p shit. That is no ones native resolution.

This. A thousand times this. I really don't get why the games journalism folk seem to have such animosity to the people they make content for. Yes there are some fuckwits out there who give you constant shit (deservedly at times) but don't paint us all with the same bloody brush!

Us vs. Them since 2012 and still going strong.

It's sad, really, to see such contempt and hatred from a group of people... it's practically a job requirement within the gaming media these days. The more you dislike and talk down to your readership, the more traffic you'll get. That's where the money is. And, since it's difficult to earn clicks because there are so many websites and so many writers out there, it's a battle of who pisses off more people-- not who writes/reports the most interesting stuff.

bullcorn to the extreme. I'm on a 24 inch and the difference is obvious to anyone with eyes.
Most gamers out there are comparing it like this. As if it was Static images. Wallpapers, screenshots.

It's different when there is an upscaler and the game is in motion. You can hardly tell the difference. If both of the games are running side by side.

That would be assuming it is about films.

Games are a different story.

I don't follow. The point is that it depends how far you sit from the screen. Of course with portables and computers you'll be looking from closer where you'll notice the difference, but when you're on a TV, I don't see why it doesn't apply.

I'm not kidding, my jaw dropped reading this stuff.

Most people don't care, I get that - but if you're a journalist focused on this form of entertainment and everything that means, you sure did a fine job picking the career worst suited for you if you tell people that you need 50" to notice 1080p.

I've got so many more things to say, but I shouldn't feed these Xbox PR people more, and it'd probably be an overreaction.

But did they preface that by saying you should buy the PS4 native 1080p version ONLY if you have a 50 inch TV or larger?>

Damn did he call all of neogaf assholes? Lmao this is too good.

It really is. Serves to show how intelligent and capable of argumentation they are when they portray NeoGAF as a hivemind.

On the other hand, I know where they're coming from. When everyone's telling you you're wrong the lines between individuals probably do get a little blurry.

Alright, fine, let's do some optics calculations.

  • A 50" screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio is about 43.579 inches (1.112m) wide by 24.513 (0.623m) tall.
  • At 1920x1080, the pixels would be 0.0227 inches (0.579mm) wide and tall. At 1280x720, they're 0.034 inches. (0.864mm)
  • The typical resolution for a human eye with 20/20 vision is about 2 arcminutes per line pair.
  • This means a feature is no longer resolvable when it's 10,801 times further away from the eye than it is tall/wide. (2 arcminutes / 360 degrees = 10801.08)
  • On a 50" display with a 1080p resolution, individual pixels can no longer be resolved if the viewer is 20.432 feet (6.228m) away from the screen. For the same display at 720p, it's 30.603 feet (9.328m).
I'm sorry, IGN, but you'll need to retake this class. I'll be giving the lectures, and I'm requiring you to sit an additional 10.171 feet away from the whiteboard.

Oh look it's Anthony Gallegos. The guy that got a job at Zombie Studios 3 months after giving Blacklight: Retribution a 8.5 in his IGN review (2nd highest review for the game).

Have I been an anal asshole about this Anthony?

Hahahaha

Oh my. This thread just keeps on giving.

STOP GIVING THEM CLICKS.

I have managed to NEVER click any of their sites and I have survived as a gamer. Block them off your twitter. Do not go to their sites. Do not engage them in their shenanigans.

It is that easy. Just stahp. These people aren't fit to report on games, nor are they ethical or unbiased. They do not deserve to be working in the capacity they do. So stop supporting them.

To be fair, Ryan had already publicly said that IGN's target audience are idiots (in so many words). So they probably don't care if the information they're getting from him is accurate or not.

Translation:

Do not correct me when I am wrong. If you insist upon doing so, please keep in mind that I will never acknowledge or retain any facts or information that are pertinent to the subjects I discuss, or to my profession. I am not bought and paid for. I am simply incompetent and willfully ignorant. Can't we please just talk about drinks, books, girlfriend troubles, and a new project I've been working on? Fucking nerds, I swear!

Many notable figures in gaming "journalism" are people who neither have a technological background nor an interest in the technical details of the hardware that runs the games they play and review. During reviews, visuals are criticized based upon the subjective nature of "art direction" and objective complaints are relegated to framerate issues or visual glitches when they adversely affect their playthroughs.

Case in points include Gregg Miller's reiteration of "DDR5" instead of "GDDR5" for PS4 during and following PS4 reveal. In recent times, Adam Sessler's take on "Resolution gate" and now this.

The issue becomes when these individuals perpetuate these kinds notions, tantamount to old wive's tales and have been proven to be wrong by scientific assessments as "facts". It's fine by me and perhaps by many more if they do not care about the difference they can or cannot perceive since it's their prerogative but that does not change the facts. As such, the subsequent cavalier attitude of Mr. Dyer own up to his mistake is indicative of a mind that cannot distinguish between the ramification of presenting opinions as facts on record as an employee of a journalistic outlet. And this unfortunate outlook is shared among many in the industry (that are not a part of Anandtech or somesuch, in the corporate world).

What a shame.

When you say "lol these guys say there is no difference, I can tell the difference," you are showing off that you don't really understand how little weight anecdotal evidence carries. But that's the large portion of the evidence presented in the case against the comment in this thread, anecdotal "I can tell easily." It doesn't really help prove one way or another.

yeah a pixel is made up of 3 sub pixels, you can see them if you get very very close to your screen(like a few cm away) so 1080p is actually 3240 sub-pixel P. but you need to get a lot closer than 2m on a 50" screen to see any of the sub pixels. but shouldn't you be able to see them according to his calculation?

Watching the actual video, I think there is a bit of an overreaction going on here. But I think their responses on Twitter are more despicable then the original controversy and it was probably worth it for that.

It's weird the relationship the press have with those they want to come to their sites and consume their content.

There seems to be a lot of disdain from the journos towards gamers , some even seem bitter about having to write about games for people like us.

What I really don't understand is how some journos can be asshats and borderline abusive towards their readers. If I go on my social media and call my clients entitled man babies I'm probably looking for a new job , yet the likes of Dyer and Gies say whatever the fuck they want.
