So, I searched and couldn't find a thread, and I'd be eager to hear what GAFers' favorite boss battles of 2013 were. Pics and video are encouraged. No spoiler tags needed, just use a heading before talking about a game so people can scroll past spoilers. Please explain your answers, Lord Helix can only keep the mighty ModBot away for so long....

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon

Grouchy Possessor, the first boss, was quite awesome and memorable.

You face off against a giant, possessed spider who shoots mini spiders at you. You have to light a web with a torch and use it to attack the spider. As one review mentioned it's reminiscent of a Rube Goldberg contraption. It's very smooth and playable and any error feels like it's on the part of the player and not the game. It doesn't hurt that this is one of the best-looking games on the 3DS.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

I recently finished up this game. As a big fan of the previous entries in the series that I've played, I really didn't mind the much-maligned tutorials much, and I found the game to be a lengthy and wholly charming adventure. Two of the Giant Luigi boss battles in particular stuck out to me.

The first of these is the epic struggle against the Zeekeeper.

These Giant battles consist of stylus attacks and dodges and gyroscope sections. When the Zeekeeper attacks, you have to dodge out of the way or send his attacks back at him. The real fun starts though when he rips open a tear in the dimensional fabric (!) and you have to dodge his attacks using the gyroscope and hit him when he's dazed. It doesn't hurt that the music in this battle is epic.

The Giant Bowser battle is even more epic in some ways.

God DAMN, this battle was a real nail-biter for me. Unlike the non-Giant battles, there's no leveling up for Giant Luigi, so the battles increasingly put your skills to the test and there's no grinding to be done to help you increase your stats and give you a better chance in these battles. You fight Giant Bowser in the middle of a volcano (of course!) and he starts out charging against you. If you dodge him, he falls into lava. The goal is to keep knocking him into the lava, but it's not very easy to do so. You also can jump away from his attacks, onto his airship, and charge into him, and an army of Shy Guys will try to poke at your feet and serve up delicious, regenerating meat to Bowser. There's also a second phase requiring traversal on a massive Star across a gyroscopic obstacle course to deliver a finishing blow. Oh, and of course if you dodge an attack successfully, you get to execute that ultra-satisfying Bowser tail spin, a la Mario 64. The whole game is bursting with creativity--truly the Mario 3D World of RPGs--and these battles are an excellent example of this.

This was precisely the kind of bossfight I was wanting post-AC: 1 that worked within the melee combat mechanics. You couldn't just simply press Triangle to win, you had to pay more attention to your actions for once & be a little smarter. More so than any fighting game I felt this boss captured the feel of the fistfight showdown between equally matched opponents.

David from The Last of Us:

Super tense, and comes as a perfect climax to Winter. I was impressed that they were able to work in a boss fight into the games formula without it feeling forced at all, or being some giant fungal monstrosity. It bends the rules of the game just enough to be distinct without being out of place.

Jaguar Javier from Guacamelee:

This is pretty much what all traditional boss fights should aspire to be: it's really difficult, but never, ever feels cheap, and it forces you to use all your abilities to beat him. The fight is super quick and it's all about getting his patterns down while also being able to master all your own abilities. Just a really, really fantastic fight.

Aaaaand I'm struggling to think of any other memorable fights from 2013 games I played, which makes me sad because I LOVE boss fights (when they are done well).

I'd put Wind Waker Ganon on this list, but I'm not counting him because it's a remake.

OP, why are you putting the giant battles from Dream Team in your list? Those were absolutely awful, ESPECIALLY Giant Bowser >.<

Although, I do see that it's time for our daily Platinum Games thread.

Beginning 2013 - Metal Gear Rising Armstrong fight.

Then Wonderful 101 came out and crushed it with it's final operation.

This.

It's a shame that so many people had trouble with the fight, but I can understand why. I can't even find a video to post of someone doing it flawlessly.

Can't have a "daily Platinum Games thread" without conspicuously forgetting Anarchy Reigns exist. In that game, I really enjoyed fighting Durga on hard (with no retries), to name one boss.

Metal Gear Rising - Mistral
The fight reminds me of the Jeanne fight in bayonetta, while I don't like having to deal with the extra robot thingies, it wasn't as gimmicky as some of the other bosses.

Spoiler thread.
Also, DmCs Vergil fight was pretty good.
Metal Gear Rising (all bosses)
Diantha
Pokemon X/Y
The end of Ninja Gaiden 3: Razers Edge.

Yeah, I thought about Tiki Tong from DKCR 3D too, but didn't include him for the same reason. I do think your Mario 3D World one counts as a boss, even if it's a bit non-traditional. It was still tricky and a ton of fun.

Opinions, mrmickfran. I love these battles!

I think what made the Plasma Wrath memorable for me, was with how unsettling the whole ordeal was. From distracting it while Brittany & her group of Pikmin try to carry Olimar out of the twisted tunnels, to the final phase where you have to cut it down to size & use all of your Pikmin-types to the best of their respective abilities.

The Giant Bowser fight was atmospheric, I'll give you that, but the gyro section almost ruined the entire game for me >.<

Aww! It was tough, I'll say that. Really tough. The movements were subtle and the pattern to memorize was pretty tricky. I just kept at it till I beat it. I got my butt kicked several times in both of those battles.

I'd also add Lysandre, the setting/music of the battle were very good.

X/Y had really good backdrops for the battles in comparison to previous games in the series - they really made those important battles stand out. I'd hesitate to say that Pokémon has the best boss battles of anything, though...

I haven't yet played MGR, but if half of what I hear about Armstrong is true, that sounds like it should win.

However one tthat's gonna be overlooked a lot in this thread are the bosses from Pikmin 3, all of them. Incredible designs, really intense fights trying desperately to save as many Pikmin as you can, usually in a tight space with hazards everywhere.

The best bosses definitely came from Platinum in MG Rising and 101. It's impressive how consistently great their boss fights have been.

I see your jergingha and raise you a Diejeah:

The levels leading up to it started out boring and frustrating with the most difficult to use weapon yet, but proceed to get more awesome and culminated with a aerial battle that took place in a torrent of rain. This is the part where the game fully clicks.

On a different note, Monsoon from MGR (admittedly I played the PC version so it was a 2014 title for me). Granted, although the story overall was kinda cheesy, the presentation prior to his fight was probably the best story point in the game.

Thank you! What makes this boss battle stand out? I realize you didn't post it, but I was wondering if you had any thoughts on it.

I've actually never even played the game haha. But I've heard the game can be a surprisingly difficult old school brawler, so maybe just a good ol' fist fight? Really not sure, sorry!

If the button prompts were bigger it would undeniably be a QTE.

Because that's basically what it was.
