20+ hours isn't long enough?

I mean I guess they could pad it with another 20 hours of grinding like all the other RPGs but does anyone really want that?

Im fine with 20 hours, but for sure your not serious about all RPGs being a grind fest over that limit?

I have never grinded in a tales game before, even on hard and unknown, and those games can hit 40+ like my recent xillia playthrough which was 100 and i enjoyed every bit of it.

I also don't grind in kingdom hearts games.
This is a different type of RPG and should be compared to paper mario esque games, which are short yet fun for what they are, it shouldn't be compared to ALL RPGs that are over the 20 hour mark, which is most of them.

I can 1000% understand why some people are cautious when they here something like "15-20 hours" and "RPG" in the same breath.
Its not something the general RPG community is used to and I'm confused as to why some people cannot understand why someone would question it.

(as per my other posts in this thread, i am not talking about myself, as i understand what this game is, that doesnt mean everyone does)

I only plan on buying the game because it looks fucking hilarious, and fun.

Me too! But I'll definitely wait if the content isn't there to justify the $60 price (at least for me). Totally willing to wait for it to go down in price, if this ends up being the case.

Game looks awesome though.

Being 8 hours in, I don't feel like this is coming to an end yet. Granted I have done a lot of exploring and side quests. I be curious if someone who has beat the game could tell me how far I am via pm please.

honestly 15 hours or so is perfect for me. with school/work/social shit i just don't have tie or massive RPGs but I REALLY want to play this and finish it and now it's looking like I'll be able to.

20 hours or so is around the length of the Paper Mario games. That's great, and a fine length for an RPG with a simple battle system.

15 hours or lower rings alarm bells because the game could possibly be ending before it has the chance to explore all of the possibilities of the concept. That is very bad.

A few of those artificially extend their length through the amount of grinding one needs to do. I'd rather have a 10-15 hour focused RPG, than one stretching your engagement with it in a bullshit way.

There are plenty of 30 hour or so RPGs that don't have grinding or feel padded.

I'll never understand this. Wouldn't it be better to play a game that is paced well instead of one that's rushed to shit, even if it takes you longer to beat?

"Saturated fat causes heart disease as much as Brawndo is what plants crave."
If this game is dripping with South Park atmosphere, writing, and voice acting, it could be 6 hours and I'd gladly pay $60. That's like a whole season of South Park, but interactive. It's a fresh medium, which Trey Parker seems to shine most in. South Park seasons of late have had fewer great episodes per season because they're out of consistent material and have gone topical. So this could be like a fully interactive, best episode sort of quality experience.

I'm talking about wrpg mostly. Also, if you take all fluff/filler grind out , most JRPG have 10-15 hours of non-filler gameplay and story. I'd rather play 15 hour rpg than crappy 60 hour jrpg, where only thing you do is grind.

JRPGs are the worst when it comes to extending their gameplay and narrative. Gave up Bravely Default after 25 hours because of that. Nothing was happening at that point. The gameplay no longer evolved and the story was just "Get those chrystals!"

So yeah I ma all for shorter RPG experiences. I am up for anything that goes to up to 30 hours but after that it's really hard to creating something that stays engaging for so long.

You've played Stick of Truth already and know it's rushed? Bummer.
For real though just because a game is short doesn't mean it's rushed in any way. Hopefully this isn't because I hate a rushed game as much as the next guy.
But anyway I get what you mean and I understand I'm in the very small minority feeling like this, but I have rely any gaming time these days, so I like the time I do spend playing something to be meaningful and worthwhile. I know there are obviously exceptions but I find longer games (mainly RPGs) as a whole are either padded or way too slow paced for me to be interested. I like to play something for a few hours a week for a month or so then feel like I accomplished something and move on to a new game.

I think the right way to do it, is like Fallout or Skyrim, where you just have a ton of side missions and quests to tackle. But that requires a lot of characters and writing, so I get why that's not the norm. But I agree, the grinding aspect in JRPGs (especially when it's used to extend the end), is too much. At the point where you are just grinding and there is no plot to go between that grinding, the game has lost me.

I can't believe you can't even talk about the game's length because of an embargo, stupid.

If its not at least 15 hours, then why even make an RPG? Should have been a point & click adventure or platformer instead.

I don't think Western RPGs and Japanese RPGs are that much different on that front. You could always say you can beat Fallout New Vegas in 10 hours but it would kind of be dishonest considering the amount of side quests you could do and you should do to acquire more items and skills and learn more about the lore of the game. That's part of the fun to get your main character stronger and the devs actually put efforts into adding additional content. The same can be said for something like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights. Even Dragon Age Origins had lots of extra stuff to do that was well done and wasn't a waste of time.

I'm not sure where the 60 hours crappy grinding JRPG thing came from. Because the game is long it must automatically be grindy and be crappy? Seems like a slippery slope to go through that kind of generalization. If the devs actually designed so much side content to do and explore and that it makes the game a more complete experience I think it's a positive. Tales of Vesperia is a game with so much side quests and side events that you can play for 40 hours without even grinding because the devs took the time and efforts to add so much content to it. I played SMT IV for over 50 hours and never did grinding outside of beating the optional extra boss at the end and probably only wasted 2-3 hours.

If we cut all the extra stuff or "filler" in Fallout New Vegas or a Tales games and make the game around 10 hours. Are we really getting a better game? I think not. That seems what you posted is about.

I consider gameplay pretty highly when talking about RPGs and their ability to keep me interested.
My top played RPGs all have outstanding gameplay mechanics as opposed to epic stories (others may consider them epic lol, however on my case these games were purely gameplay driven for me).

Obsidian obviously cut a lot of content out so they could release it as DLC down the line. Those bastards.

They did cut stuff, but...

Parker said they were urged to "cut it down, cut it down, cut it down," and "that everyone kept saying to us [make that extra content] DLC" — drawing jeers from the crowd — "and I agree... fuck that."

"Somehow or another," Parker said of what was ultimately trimmed from The Stick of Truth, "this shit will get out there," perhaps in the form of a TV episode or multiple episodes.

I agree that when I hear a "15hr" + "RPG" I'm def alarmed. However, I don't automatically think that makes it unacceptable.

Watching the first hour of the game, there is no question that the game is deliberately fast paced for an RPG.

I remember people saying dishonored was 5-6 hours and I played the shit outta that for close to 50. People who rush through games and then expect the rest of us to play the same way they play piss me off.

Who are these people?
5-6 hours IS the general play time given by the developer for finishing the game, nothing else.

As stated before, i finished my xillia plat at 100 hours, when most do it in 80.. Doesn't mean I'm being expected to do anything? Why would you think that?
However you choose to deal with a game is just that, nobody cares either way.
These estimates are just that, estimates.
Sometimes they are even average play times.

I have finished numerous games both before and after their estimated and average completion times.
I have never experienced anyone expecting me to finish a game in a specific time frame before.

Maybe if you were a big time youtuber or streamer and have a schedule to keep, other than that, nobody cares how long it takes you to finish a game.

Most people rush games, I've noticed, both from comparing my own times and watching people play on twitch.

What a silly argument, they can't make the game they'd like to make because it isn't hitting some arbitrary hour mark? What next, no platformers over 12 hours?

No kidding, yeesh. The entire like last 4 pages is almost entirely length discussion.

We don't have much concrete new info to talk about, so we're kinda chewing old soup at the moment. It's basically that, answering when the embargo date lifts (March 4), and reenacting the Black Friday trilogy until Tuesday.

12 hours for a main story is unacceptable in an RPG. And honestly, if the game is even that short, then I highly doubt any extra hours of gameplay will be fleshed out side missions (like in Fallout). It will probably just be collecting things etc.

Very disappointing. I hope I'm wrong though. I would be okay with even a 12 hour main story, if it had like 10 hours of side missions. But hell, even that sounds kind of low for a $60 game. Especially for an RPG.

Super Mario RPG was around that length and it's one of the best games I have ever played.

so the game isnt over 100 hours? preorder cancelled then...what is this? a baby's toy?

amiright?

Nobody said this.
Or came close, outside of one person.

As stated, its very easy to understand why some people are approaching this game differently.
To some people, RPG means long game, thats not hard to understand.

Very few people in this thread feel this way and it really doesn't warrant this long, drawn out back and forth of summed up, misquoted statements.

Yup, personally I plan on playing the fuck outta the game.

me too. I will never understand arguments for length, especially in this case. The game obviously has other stuff to do, and you can play as a different class. Someone also mentioned something about a choice in the game that changes it. There is plenty of playtime here.

Correct, you're at least playing through the game twice if you want to see all content. Maybe it is artificially padding length or maybe it is noticeable differences in story, quests presented, battles, etc. I don't think we know one way or the other yet.

I assumed you were referring to my response, as i mentioned i finished a game in 100 hours, which is much more than said games estimated time to completion -.-
Which was weird in the first place as I'm perfectly fine with this game being 15-20 hours, I'm very excited for it.

Im trying to explain why some people may be turned off by the length and the fact that this is an RPG because i understand where those people are coming from.
Thats all.

oh lol...i just skimmed through several pages when i woke up this morning because its just been people complaining about time

Last 4 pages in a nutshell :

20 hours is too short, RPGs must be longer--> I prefer the game being 10 hours than being filled with crappy filler for 50 hours like all JRPG --> 10 hours is for people that rush it through, obviously. It took me 50 hours to beat a game that should take 5 to complete -> Yeah, 10 hours is fine it means you can replay it again quickly --> Wait, doesn't replaying it again can be considered crappy filler since most of the game will be the same.

Something rivaling the Sonic cycle is about to be born. I can feel it.

If I live in the UK and I want to play this uncensored on my 360 what's the quickest/easiest way?
Can I download it from the Xbox store? Do I need to create a fake us account or can I just download it uncensored from the UK store?

Yeah, its pretty drawn out for no reason.
If the people who are concerned about the time are on the fence, they should wait for the reviews and impressions.
I dot know of any physical midnight openings to pick up the game, and reviews are coming at midnight on the 4th.
Gives people on the fence an entire day to decide if they want the game or not. (Even longer if were being rational about it, someone could technically buy the game whenever)

If someone is on the fence and is a PC user its a different story, as there is obviously an option to get the game at midnight (may be for the console versions as well, i very well may be wrong about there not being any midnight openings, however i have checked and see nothing), in which case, I'm sure we will be getting more impressions and leaked reviews leading up to launch, so just wait it out, or pickup the game later on in the day, after the reviews and impressions are released.

Im personally in for the console version on launch day, as early as possible preferably.
Still unsure about PS3 vs. 360 though... Would much prefer the game on PS3.
Need to see how they compare, hopefully we get something on that soon and before launch, if we don't...ill just pickup the PS3 version.
