These NES adventure games must have been huge in Japan. I've read the volumes of Oishinbo manga released in the US, and I cannot imagine interpreting that as a video game, without some kind of Cooking Mama component that is. The manga is basically the main character and his neglectful father competing for who knows more about Japanese delicacies. Its a good manga (I learned why there is no sashimi of fresh water fish), but must be a weird game.

Not yet but I can only assume Dr. S will start covering the SFC/SNES once it gets "released", he's currently at mid-1989 for the systems he's covering.

Yeah, Ghost Lion kinda sucks, I bought a copy (I have a much much higher tolerance for 8-bit RPG design than most people) but can't really get too far because the battle theme is absolutely grating.
So, uh. A new episode was released like 2 weeks ago apparently. Episode 46 which covers June-July 1989. I haven't been checking my Google Reader in a while so I didn't see it until now. So most of you probably know already, but here's a heads up anyway for those that might be interested and have missed it.

Finally. The wait between episodes can be excruciating, but the end result is worth it. Seeing all the mediocre releases that have been forgotten about makes me appreciate the great games that have stood the test of time that much better.
Awesome! Been keeping a tab on the blog the last few days and of course the one day I don't it's uploaded. Well to be fair he hasn't made a proper blog post about it yet. And the 60fps version hasn't been uploaded on Archive.org yet, so I'll be waiting on that before watching.

I'd imagine these episodes take an incredible amount of dedication, research, recording, editing, and just plain playing the videogames that it doesn't bother me that the episodes take a long time. I enjoy periodically going through the backlog while waiting for the new Chrontendo.

They used to come out more or less once a month after all, and now it's more like once or twice a year. But it's a lot of work making them. He started doing the show while unemployed but he has a job now and obviously that comes first.

Wow, I had almost given up hope. So happy that it's not dead.
I guess it's just too niche. As good as I think it is, you really have to be invested in the NES to enjoy it I guess, and most people probably don't care much about NES games other than the greatest ones. I think most people who watch are probably NES collectors. It's pretty sad that this thread is two years old and still doesn't have 100 posts yet though.

I'm not huge into NES stuff either, but his mini-series on SMS and PCE are fucking ace. I mean, he runs through the entire SMS catalog and lets you know what's up with every single game released on the platform, and he doesn't just sample the games, but plays them thoroughly and givens such level-headed appraisals. Dr. Sparkle is a treasure. Going to get righteously baked and take in this new episode tonight.

Nah, genuine game history enthusiasts are a rare breed. Light nostalgic musings, along with rants about "bad" old video games, have broad appeal... but Chrontendo is a different beast entirely.
I am really surprised its not bigger too. The NES has so many amazing and quirky games, and Dr. Sparkle is doing such a great job. I agree the general interest for gaming history is surpisingly low though. Hopefully that changes when the medium and its audience matures even more.

Yeah that's probably the case. Most people don't seem to care about where genres, ideas, and mechanics in games originated, and how the medium evolved.

I suppose your right, I just thought amongst the myriad niche audiences on gaf and the Body pillow brigade this show'd get a better showing.

This thread reminded me to start watching this series as I've been really looking for meaty game history bits. Are there any comparable series out there that cover games/consoles of the past?
Generation 16 does something very similar with Sega Genesis games.
