Japan is a complex market. That game alone cannot guarantee the PS4 success. They need to create a trend, and that's not easy. But is too early, give it time.

Right now Sony should be knocking on Namco's and Atlus' doors and showing them worldwide ps4 sales, try to convince them to make ps4 versions of Zestyrancharia and Persona.

It's not out of the question. It's unlikely because I don't see their next handheld releasing in the first half of 2015 and Nintendo will probably try something to revitalize hardware sales but DS went from 2.8M in 2010 to 0.6M in 2011 to 0.07M in 2012.

Hardware sales can drop fast and PSP is ~5M ahead.

The Vita got a new bundle + new game + vita tv sales. And Still under 3DS (Nothing new this week) + 3DS doing poorly.

Pantha rei is an game engine. Of course is going to get collaboration from the consoles makers. Totally different story.

I was thinking globally, where there's 0 chance of it catching up imo.

But even just in Japan I don't think the 3DS will reach the PSP unless the next redesign is something amazing.

Last gen was pretty awesome with how well the PSP and (especially) the DS sold, This gen not even coming close to reaching 1/4 of that is kind of depressing. I wonder if we'll ever see anything like it again in the handheld space now that mobiles have taken over.

Yup. It would be a small price to pay to improve their Japanese lineup, tighten their relationship with S-E and maybe even ensure more exclusive PS4 titles in the long run.

Yes but it will help convert some PS3 users into PS4 users and help plug the holes in the release schedule. Sony should really be trying to get as many PS3 titles and turn them into cross gen titles.

You can't exactly fix market contraction mid-stream. Not without releasing a brand-new product, anyway.

The 3ds line up for this year is looking oddly empty too... Of course there'll be new announcements, but 2013 didn't start like this.

Looks like everything sold poorly. Wasn't expecting much from ps4 anyway. Needs more games. 3DS is dropping down to Vita levels, and that's just sad. Vita remains steady, which sucks because that means it's still selling poorly.

One thing some people seem to forget is that 2016, at the latest, is when Nintendo will probably launch their next handheld. The 3DS was designed well before iOS really took off and it's likely that its successor will be much better equipped to deal with a threat that has gobbled up over half the DS' marketshare. There's a good chance of it featuring PS360-tier hardware too, essentially allowing developers to re-use their HD assets, kinda like what happened with the PS2/PSP. If the Japanese market hasn't embraced the PS4 by then, things could become very grim for Sony's mindshare in their home country, barring another Monster Hunter-like miracle. Sure, the 3DS' successor could tank, but it's never a good idea to gamble your own success on someone else's failure.

It's absolutely vital for Sony to have several Japan-centric, PS4 exclusive big hitters on the shelves by mid 2015.
