See, this is exactly what I'm talking about. Kill la Kill is objectively creepier in how it depicts underaged girls, but people are willing to excuse it in ways they aren't the much tamer show like K-on.

Depends on how you define "objectively creepy". The "innocent" nature of K-On instantly ramps up the creep factor of any kind of sexualization (by either the creators or the fans) to me

I feel I need to defend myself for liking K-On. I really like the show, but am 100% not attracted to the characters. They feel as innocent as the sentiment of the show. Any of the sexualization in the show (Which is extremely rare and usually only happens in opening and endings) only serves to make me uncomfortable. K-On as a comedy/slice of life series, is really endearing is actually a very well written character driven comedy. It's very gag-focused, but executes a lot of them well and the characters are all likable in their own tropey ways. It's a good show that is very enjoyable even if you don't want to put it in them.

Also, to be clear, I'm not shaming people who find anime characters attractive, I certainly am one of those weirdos. And I'm also not claiming this is pedophile shit, because let's be honest, it's only really half as creepy as actual pedophilia. I'm just saying that the series has merits of its own that even if you're not into the weird creepy sex side of it, you can still find something to enjoy in it, and I recommend that you give it a try if you at all like comedic anime.

It's funny how a show like K-on gets far more crap than, say, Kill la Kill. Even though Kill la Kill is 100 times more guilty of whatever people think happens in K-on, it's not casually used as an insult or insinuation in the same manner. It almost seems like what people really have a problem with is the slice-of-life genre rather than fanservice/pandering, as if wanting to watch a show about high school girls in a band is automatically more suspect than wanting to watch a show where high school girls violently battle each other while nearly nude.
They'd be nothing questionable about K-ON!/!! if it wasn't a anime. All the questionable stuff comes out of what people project on it from both sides honestly.

Kill la Kill straight up uses
parental molestation
as fanservice so I'd be very interested in any argument about K-on being objectively more creepy.

Using fanbases as an argument is poor form because ultra-popular shows will have more creepy fans just based on statistical probability. I'm sure My Little Pony has more creepy fans than most shows as well.

Oh I definitely don't like Kill La Kill (I only watched like two episodes in before deciding it wasn't for me), I've got problems with its designs, but there's something to be said for honesty of intention

Mortal Kombat vs Dead Or Alive? There's an underlying thing here with people's sensibilities about the mix of eroticism and cute/uguu anime~ stuff.

Nor is K-ON attempting to provide any kind of believable character behaviour (like the overwhelming majority of manga actually), it's more like that fake behaviour you see in from idols or people on those Japanese TV shows with the guests in the little frame, not sure of the term for them.

Like high schoolers...? Not even close. I'm sorry, but they look (and act) like elementary or early middle schoolers at most.

APc21VOl.jpg

Soft, featureless baby faces? Check.
Kiddy poses/positioning? Check.
Child-like tendencies in their mannerisms? Check.

Eh, I want to say I've seen middle schoolers/high schoolers like that, but sometimes it's hard quantify a real life age when looking at a drawing.

I will say after seeing high schoolers for the first time in like 5 years the other day, they are friggin TINY. That could just be me getting old though.

But yeah, at least Asuza (or whatever her name is) looks like a kid most of the time.

I'm not saying there aren't plenty of series without problems of their own, but K-on is moe-blob glorification of exaggerated 'innocence', and that includes their body designs.

I guess it all comes down to how we define "moe-blob" and how the art style displays it. Sometimes I'd find it totally believable for certain moe-blob characters to be high school students, while other times they don't even look human.

So yes, when people make sexual comments about "dem hips" for this kind of show, it is incredibly creepy.

I don't know about actually fostering that kind of view though. I'd probably be more likely to use the word "tolerate" since anything beyond what the creators have flat out stated (which IIRC isn't anything regarding stuff the fans do) would be an assumption. Of course, it's not like any manga/anime/LN creators have any say in the manner, considering the fans will do that kind of stuff to everything that doesn't have an ounce of sexual intent.

Also, you work at Xseed! Shouldn't you be kind of used to that stuff :p

K-on isn't even one of my favorite shows and I think you're being unfair here. While the first season has more of the "artificial moe" you're talking about, by all accounts the second season develops a much more believable and involving atmosphere and invokes feelings of nostalgia in a large number of people.

But even so, there's dozens of other shows people could call out if they actually wanted to talk about creepy Japanese nonsense. Toonami just recently aired a show which is exponentially worse than K-on in terms of pandering, as well as being written like bad fan fiction. It doesn't get talked about in the same way because it's not slice-of-life. A lot of people bring up K-on as an example of all that's "wrong" with anime not because it commits the most sin, but because it's a highly popular and visible show from a genre they don't care for.

So, er, this thread went places? Well, not really places, more like that one place that all thread are doomed to go. How unfortunate.

Onto the actual topic, there's nothing particularly surprising about this reveal and with no information to go on it's hard to draw any conclusions. I'm going to ignore any possible art implications that the teaser image might have because, well, it may have little to do with the final look of the show.

The only thing that's clear is that this has taken way, way longer than was initially planned and this series had a troubled development. I wonder how it's all going to turn out?

It's entirely possible for them to be creepy in different ways.

Yeah like Sword Art Online is a genuinely offensive show with awful pandering and exhibits pure sexist bullshit through and through.

That's something people should be outraged about and not K-ON!/!! which is genuinely inoffensive apart from what it's fanbase projects on it (no different from MLP really).

If you're talking about Sword Art Online then you must be blind/deaf, that show gets an immense amount of hatred.

Hell I consider that show to be the worst anime of all time.

I'm agreeing with you for the most part I think, I'm trying to put my finger on why it is in fact being done, and what rustles people's jimmies about it. I'm also trying to toss out the idea that K-ON characters should be accurate representations of standard behaviour and not the cutesy thing.

I guess I should've segmented the latter half of my post. :3

It gets a lot of hatred from people who actually watched it, i.e. people with empirical experience about the nature of the show. K-on is most often attacked by people who will never even watch the show, unless your name is Jman.

I think it's almost entirely the popularity. There are more fans so people see the creepiness way easier. Just like MLP fans, they're relatively less creepy than some smaller fanbases, but you don't see those ones so you can't complain about how creep they are.

There are a ton of aspects of Kill la Kill that bother me, no doubt. Every time the fan service stuff comes on, I cringe. I've never been a fan of it, and I think it's extremely distracting and adds nothing to the show (even on an entertainment level, I don't get it). However, I think this show is really entertaining at the same time (with regards to how absurd the plot is, the action etc.) To me, it comes off like a b-movie/grindhouse film. I can't take it seriously, and I laugh my ass off watching it.

But yeah, it does bug me that these characters are young. The
parental molestation is disturbing.
I guess I can't really defend the show in the large scheme of things. It has stuff that is definitely offensive and things that I object to. Maybe it makes me a bad person that I feel that way, yet still find enjoyment in it. I don't know.

I kind of hate the idea that people would see me as a "pedo" for liking the show though. When I find that content awful. I'm pretty new to anime, admittedly. Only started watching heavily this year (got into film first, then slowly watching some TV series). I for the most part, have avoided anime that has fan service. And am in general, pretty new to that culture/stuff. And yet, I ended up watching Kill la Kill and finding it really amusing, objectionable content aside =/

Well I mean, how much should I have watched if I didn't like it? I've seen probably the first half dozen episodes but yeah, I'm not going to watch two seasons of something I don't like

Well, I wasn't trying to say that KLK fans are pedos, rather the opposite, that it's stupid to assume fans of a show automatically like it due to its worst aspects.

SO I can't help but feel a few lines got crossed in this debate.

Honestly its just one long spiraling tangent from the guy who was apparently unironically wishing the new Sailor Moon anime would look more like K-On. For some reason.

I'm actually pretty happy the first shot makes it seem like they're hewing closer to the older style

Sorry for mis-reading your post then. Still, I do feel torn on some of the anime I've seen. There are things that I clearly don't like, and find offensive. Anything that has under age characters sexualized, doesn't sit with me. Or hell, even shows with adults, that has a bunch of fan service pummeling you non-stop I find terrible (not just in an objectifying, shallow sense. But even on an entertainment level, I find it grating).

And I agree with you completely. I would not be watching Kill la Kill if I didn't find it absurdly entertaining. I sure as hell am not watching for the fan service.

I'm really looking forward to watching the new Sailor Moon actually because I can't stomach the older series from a quality standpoint, especially the audio and the length, 200 something episodes in total of the villain-a-day layout is a bit much for me. Like I've mentioned before, the manga presentation gives me some serious eye strain or something, it's tough for me. I'm hoping for some Yamato 2199-esque production!

If you've watched a good portion of the show, you're not guilty of the kind of thing I'm referring to. I'm talking about the offhand posts in almost every anime thread these days which claim K-on is creepy or that it's the cancer killing anime(as if well-made shows which are popular across demographic lines are anime's biggest problem).

Eh I really don't see K-on specifically being brought up a lot, most people just say moe in general is "pedo and cancer".

I like Pluto but Neptune is the best.

I'm really going to have to read in now to get to see their personalities. I know all their names but never experienced them all in the storyline, only 5 chapters away from her appearance. I know what I'm going to be doing this weekend. RIP eyes.

Probably didn't help that the same guy posted an ass-shaking gif.

Sooo, who is your least favorite/worse Sailor?

Haly

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Probably won't be any roses in this version.

No roses? How terrible.

Bring back Ikuhara please.

(Mars is worst. Mercury best inner. Neptune best outer. Neptune best overall. World Shaking best attack.)

Actually, I take that back. Jupiter is all about plant life!

I thought Jupiter was about that guy who looked like the sempai she had a crush on in middle school.

All the other senshi are shit tier and not worth mentioning but I especially hate Chibiusa.
