I don't give a crap about that but I think the setting is great and playing a game as a native american is pretty exciting

all the more reason to be pissed that it sucks

You only say that because it's not on 3DS.

Could anyone here help me with this? It's techincally not steam related, but if it works fine, I'll be installing Steam on it for him to use! haha

My older brother has been using his imac for ... gosh I want to say for ...10 years, (maybe more?) and it's starting to show its age. the LCD screen has lines going across it, I assume because the video card is starting to crap out. It takes ages to load up something (He tried upgrading the RAM (DDR-2!) to make it a little faster), and he really can't remove anything off of it because the HDD is so small in the first place. He uses it for EVERYTHING, and pretty much helps my parents with well... everything through it.

He rarely asks for anything for his birthday and when he does, it's usually something very small and very cheap. Even though money is tight in the household, my parents really wanted to get him a new computer this year, so they asked me to buy one for him.

I went to PCPartPicker and made up a list. I ended up with something that I hope fits both my parent's budget (they said a low $2000 figure would be what to aim for) as well as his needs. He isn't much of a gamer, but he always says it's because the mac can't handle it. I was thinking about buying him a Mac since that's what he's always used (along with an ipad iphone, etc), but in terms of value for money, I opted for a custom PC.

Could anyone here tell me if this build is fine? There's no sound card (I guess I'll stick with the realtek), and no mouse and keyboard but other than that, does the build I've posted look alright? the last time I built a PC was in 2008, so saying I'm a little rusty is a bit of an understatement. I'm just hoping there's no incompatibility issue.

"Low $2000s" is insanely overkill, well over the price to performance sweet spot.

That processor is crazy overkill, as is the motherboard, and personally I'd go for a cheaper, smaller SSD.

Edit: Even the RAM could be 10-15 bucks cheaper.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I just sent Enhanced Steam 6.0 for Firefox to Mozilla.

  • Added warning if browsing in a language other than your preferred language (set in options)
  • Added ability to add a custom amount to your Steam wallet
  • Fixed a bug that caused highlighting not to work correctly if DOM storage was disabled
  • Fixed a bug that caused emptying your shopping cart to break purchase process
  • Fixed a bug that caused you to not be able to have more than one item in your cart at once
  • Fixed a bug on badge pages that showed incorrect market links
  • Fixed a bug that caused the market page to format incorrectly
  • Fixed a bug in some languages where badge filtering didn't work properly
You can either wait for Mozilla to officially certify it (this usually takes about 2 weeks) or you can download it here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/enhanced-steam/versions/

This may be just ignorance on their part, but spending $2000 is way more than what your brother needs. You said money is tight around the house and he isn't much of a gamer, there would be no reason to spend that much.

I would say $800-$900 is the max, and that includes monitor.

Tone down the motherboard to something cheaper, throw in a i5 as your brother isn't likely to use hyperthreading, take out the 770 for a 750 ti, and I would personally drop the SSD to 128GB. CM 212 has always been an excellent budget cooler though.

Why don't you buy him an iMac and put Windows on it so he can dual boot?

If you are set on a custom pc though the fellows in this thread are really helpful:

I don't have the link handy anymore (I could have sworn it was somewhere in the PC Build thread) but you could build him a Hackintosh and have him dual-boot between Windows and the most recent version of OS X. That way he has the benefits of using his native OS for whatever work related things he does, and has the option of booting to windows to take advantage of the larger game library available there.

As for your list there, $1,800 is going to eat anything you throw at it alive. The i7 4770k may be a bit much unless he does a lot of video and large-scale photoshop work. The only thing to note is the compatibility flag:

In order to fit, the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 2GB Video Card may require removing drive bays from the Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case. The case only supports video cards up to 290mm in length without removing drive bays, while the video card is 292mm long.

Try number two on this as the first key was dead, but I was just given this key by non-gaffer Dinjoralo.

He had an extra Skullgirls key and no one had the game on their respective Steam wishlist, including myself. He agreed to giving the game away on GAF to someone who truly wants a copy.

Make sure to thank him for his generosity if you win, enjoy!

Fuck AC: Brotherhood! It CTD'd on a successful assassin mission and auto saved at the same time. Save completely corrupted and the last backup I had of it was from January. FML!
There could be saves on the web.
Well, check pm, maybe it works.

Clive Barker's Jericho is delisted. It's not, in my opinion, a very good game but if you're a collector and you don't have it yet, probably best to get in early on the aftermarket.

I don't give a crap about that but I think the setting is great and playing a game as a native american is pretty exciting

all the more reason to be pissed that it sucks
you mean playing a game as a ubisoft caricature of a native american :D

still unique enough for it to be interesting. i bought the base game only, no dlc, since i figured my time with it wouldn't be great

Count me in, I purchased (for $3) Revelations only to know just what will be of poor Desmond.
3 bucks sounds about right

if anything exploring constantinople and shit is worth that price alone

But... it's the one that sucks the least.
nah, that's 2

ass creed 2 is actually a pretty good game, the story's less dumb than ass creed 1, the characters are alright, the gameplay got enough gameyness but it was before the ubi style of lazy collectible design was in EVERY GAME EVER, da vinci is a total boss, monteriggioni (or however that's written) is really cool in both building it and exploring it with desmond, the cities in general are really varied, etc. etc.

the only good thing about brotherhood are the side objectives for missions giving the game a bit of challenge. i mean it's not necessarily bad but it's a pointless game and it really annoyed me since i preordered it and everything

Undying is one of my favorite games of all time, I never got around to Jericho for obvious reasons.

Just checked the developers on Wikipedia, good old Mercury Steam! A developer called Alchemic Productions is listed as well.

Published by Codemasters.

Yeah, It's a bit high. i guess my parents want him to have something that'll be with him for a number of years and will also help him in a job he's starting.

Thanks, I'll keep this in mind, and make some changes to it. I think the reason why my parents set the bar so high is because they've been setting money aside specifically to buy him something for the past couple of years. He's been through some rough stuff, so they've been setting money aside for the day when they can buy him something nice.

Go here

You can choose a great pc from the list at a lower cost.

Thanks for the link!

he's mentioned that he's wanted to make a hackintosh, so I figure this would be great for him.

Form factor matters too, I mean if he's an imac user, he would be getting this as an upgrade:

but if he doesn't mind how it looks or how much space it'll take then a pc is a no brainer especially if he wants better performance

He's using a 10 year old computer, I'm not sure aesthetics are a priority.

Thank DuskGolem.

a 2004 imac was still about aesthetics, I have one that still works and it's a G5:

I mean why else anyone would want to get an imac other than the looks and the OS :p

True enough, but it's only after Macs moved to x86 that hackintoshes were even an option. And if you're not specifically after the Apple look there's a lot of spiffy computer hardware nowadays (plus you might just have a monitor (or two), mechanical keyboard, and mouse on your desk anyway).

I was thinking about Guild Wars 2 and ESO, but my only real problem with most MMOs are the combat and/or lack of player economy. I played EVE for maybe 3 months, but I realized I needed more time in that MMO. I used to play Runescape, but after maybe 4 years of that I grew tired of it. The thing that drew me to EVE and what kept me in Runescape was the large player driven economy. EVE does not have the best combat and while Runescape's combat has improved, it is not on par to most non-MMOs I play. With the Elder Scrolls ONline my only real gripe was the combat and for Guild Wars 2...I am not too sure about the game since the combat seems a whole lot like the generic hotkey mmo.

Maybe some of y'all here in Steam thread can give some input? MMO fans have different standards or views than non-dedicated MMO players like myself and some of you.

I'm gonna be honest here and I mean no disrespect to MMO fans, genuinely, but I honestly can't think of one good MMO that I've ever enjoyed. Most of them have been absolute garbage in my eyes. I've tried WoW, I've tried Guild Wars 2 and countless others and I haven't really enjoyed any of them. I guess it's because I'm only really interested in PvE and from that perspective they're generally pretty shit with not a lot of thought put into them. The combat in them tends to be incredibly unsatisfying as well. Even recent ones like ESO and Final Fantasy XIV I enjoyed them initially and soon got really bored.

I think at this point I might just have to admit defeat. When I'm playing and loving RPGs like Two Worlds 2 I guess there's no real need to play MMOs but it's just one of those things I can't help but try now and again to see if I ever get interested in one. Doubt it'll ever really happen though.

As a GFWL game; the addition of Steamworks achievements implies GFWL is being removed, which also bodes well for the continued survival of the game.

I'd also like to think it bodes well on Microsoft as a PC publisher and hopefully lead to more games from them :)

Viva Pinata, Viva Pinata 2, Gears Of War and the Halo games on Steam please!

Yeah, he will get a lot more customization options with pc, I would recommend going pc too just for the fact he can swap out/upgrade any hardwares he want and being able to upgrade.

actually I think that's the imac model my brother has. lol

Yeah they are really old :(
