Anyone else feel that the rest of year is quite barren and/or quiet AAA wise?

Now that March and the slew of games like Infamous, Titanfall, Dark Souls, South Park etc. are behind us, anyone else feel that there just isn't alot to look forward to for the rest of the year on the AAA front?

Personally, I'm excited for Alien, Evil Within, Batman and Destiny but that's it. 3 months into 2014 and only 4 other "big" games to look forward to? I know we still need announcements for CoD, the other AC game and
new battlefield
but that's so expected and passe now. E3 at this rate can't bring much for the remainder of 2014.

I'll quote Nirolak from the AAA future thread, as I feel it's a bit pertinent.

I definitely see the big safe ones sticking around and a handful or riskier projects and new IPs.

Beyond that, we've had a grand total of two AAA (Alien, Evolve) and two AAAA (Assassin's Creed, Batman) announced this year and we've been in three months of prime announcement season with a basically dead VGAs just prior to boot.

We've had almost as many AAA game studio shut downs as we've had actual AAA games.

I suspect this is about what we can expect going forward.

Obviously there's a big degree of subjectivity here but does anyone else feel similarly? I find it weird that the first 12 months of a new generation can feel just so quiet.

Aside from Watchdogs in two months I have NO idea what is even coming out until October/November [Batman, Assassin's Creed].

I definitely feel the same way, and it has me concerned. I think AAA gaming is starting to reach its breaking point.

Wait for E3.

This. I seriously have only the following to be excited for:

Smash 4
Mario Kart 8
Might No 9 (2015)
Bayonetta 2

Would love to get hyped for more games, but nothing is looking particularly exciting these days.

Edit: Nothing in the list below seems note worthy besides Evolve and I think the game looks cool, but nothing to be super hyped for.

No way, there's ton of stuff to get excited about.

  • Watch_Dogs
  • Dragon Age
  • Evolve
  • The Order 1886
  • Deep Down
  • The Crew

And I haven't even mentioned Nintendo's titles.

There could be 0 (zero) AAA releases in any given year and I still wouldn't give a fuck, I just can't stand them anymore (with a few exceptions of course).

Well, multiplatform wise, there is a decent amount.
Possibly two new Assassin's Creed games as well as Dragon Age Inquisition.

Also if your an Xbox One owner, it seems Fall is going to be amazing with Subset Overdrive confirmed, Halo 2 Anniversary and Forza Horizon 2.

If think that summer is a little 'drought' but autumn - winter is fantastic

We definitely have content, it's just condensed to pretty much the biggest titles and a few risks.

Like you listed five games for the entirety of Fall plus a couple of yearly titles.

That said if each of those five really appeals to people there isn't much of an issue.

This is probably in large part due to the transition from old to new gen consoles and a yearning for maximising the amount of customers purchasing their games when only dealing with the new gen of consoles

So far with very good likelihood: Xbox One we've got Sunset Overdrive and possibly Quantum Break, Playstation 4 The Order, Nintendo has Bayonetta 2, Hyrule Warriors and hopefully X coming.

I honestly feel the same.

I think something broke inside of me around early 2013 and I noticed how same-y,predictable and stale most AAA games have become.

Isn't The Division coming this year as well?

Also I am betting on a surprise fall/winter Titanfall release for PS4...

The order 1886
Quantum Break
evolve
Sunset boulevard
Dying light
Batman Arkham knight

Yet to be announced new cod
Assassins creed unity

Yet to be announced new battlefield game

And with E3 still to go...nope think we have more than enough!

Q4 is shaping up nicely. Even the iterative titles seem to have potential: Next-gen only AC, BF by a new studio (cops theme). I think the distribution of release dates is a bit unfortunate but there were some great games this year if you consider March titles with the rest.

Feels the same for me, but there's usually still more than this for myself. Just so unimpressed with most of what's been shown off.

No way in hell is that this year.

We don't know the rest of the year

This is what I argued, can E3, at the half way point of the year, really show us much for the remainder of 2014? Surely that's got to be mostly 2015 titles.

OP, how many are you expecting? What would be a 'good' number?

Previous years I've played maybe 4 games in Oct/Nov alone, whereas now I'm looking at 4 from this point of the year looking to the end. There's usually even one little gem for the quiet summer months but nothing stands out.

So currently I've got a new PS4 with no new AAA games to play on it until Evil Within 5 months away.

Alien Isolation

Batman Arkham Knight
Call of duty
Destiny
Dragon Age
Evil Within
Evolve
Diablo ROS
Mad Max
The Order
Watch Dogs
Wolfenstein

I've got pretty much nothing exciting on my slate, since Watch_Dogs has lost all its hype value for me. I'm hoping that E3 has some good reveals, because this years looks like a backlog year for me right now.

Sony's gotta have more than just The Order. They're not that stupid.

Driveclub?

They're selling so many PS4s they can get away with Order, Driveclub and 3rd parties. Plus they're going to push Destiny so hard.

Yeah, that has been good, I've almost cleared my backlog at this point xD

I'm very excited about Nintendo recently. I bought a WiiU at launch and finally the WiiU is starting to take off. I own a PS4 and One, but I'm really looking forward to the WiiU releases this year. I'm still blown away by the quality of the games and the level of polish.

We'll see after E3. I could get 1 a month but it's certainly not barren, it's just not packed.

I'll be buying Watch_Dogs, Destiny (hoping this will provide me with some good long term multiplayer to go back to), Batman, Dragon Age, Order 1886, Assassins Creed + other yearly franchises.

Marvel

could never

It's posts like this that make me feel like shit for having sold my Wii U. I really should save up for another one. It's got/getting great games now.

As for Xbox and PS4 doesn't feel dry to me, there's a fair few big games hitting soon.

I somewhat feel this way only because I haven't seen a new overly exciting IP yet. Something needs to come along and shake things up. Overall though I still think it's going to be a pretty good year. Hopefully something comes along and surprises me.

I think my most anticipated game so far is the new Smash Bros assuming it releases this year.

Bizarre thread.

There are more AAA games coming this Q3/4 than I can probably afford to buy.

QB , SO , Halo 2A / Halo 2014 , Batman , Fifa , Battlefield and CoD , The Order, Driveclub , Uncharted ? , Watch Doggys , Destiny , Alien , FM2015 , Shadows of Mordor , Lords of the Fallen , Evolve etc

Plus I guess a new AC and whatever is announced at E3. Throw in the Likes of The Witness and HellDivers and my wallet crying already.

Edit : Also forgetting X , Zelda , Smash and MK for my WiiU

I kind of feel the same way

Especially if you aren't keen on the yearly franchises like AC/Madden/CoD

There isn't a ton announced right now.

But we shall see at e3. Sure some games Sony and MS announced last e3 will be out this year.

I thought last year was quite barren, but the rest of this year will still get me Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros, Destiny, Arkham Knight, and Bayonetta 2. And earlier this year we had Dark Souls 2 and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze so I'm personally doing fine.

I'm not sold on the Division, Watch Dogs, The Order 1886, and Assassin's Creed Unity yet.

As far as the games listed in the OP go, that seems liek more than enough for me.

Evil Within, Evolve, Batman, and Destiny are probably all gonna be great.

If no other AAA games come out for the rest of the year, those would leave me pretty happy. I fully expect to be playing Destiny all the time until Evolve comes out and steals my life. Evil Within and Batman will be small but dedicated breaks from endless multiplayer fun.

I'm just waiting on E3 at this point as it is only 2 months away. Last year's E3 was pretty good IMO despite not all focus being on the software, but hardware with the PS4 and Xbox One details (i.e. lingering doom and gloom with the DRM) and launches so I'm hoping for another good E3 come this June where an even bigger focus (should) be on the software.
