It's funny how MS is the one doing monthly updates now and Sony in taking months just for 1. I don't know why people were complaining last Gen about the PS3 always getting updates.
Yeah but you have to understand its a gaming machine first. MS is a sofrware company and has much more experience in that area. I do hope they add better features soon cuz it much needed.

The problem with PS3 updates was that they did pretty much nothing visible. Now we've had these stability updates in PS4, also, but no feature adding ones. Xbox One has been getting better, I hear.

I want my god damned suspend/resume!

Xbone hasn't been getting better. It has been adding in features that it should have already had to begin with. Granted PS4 has some missing features too but it was never as barebones as the Xbone was when it launched.

Besides last I heard the big update for ps4 is coming this month.

Thus...making it better than it was at launch.

Please. Put this on the Worst Posts Twitter.

Well I thought there would be some update news in this thread... Didn't expect that the news would be that it's not coming out today :(

Have we heard anything from Sony regarding YouTube upload? I mean export to USB is great because I can then YouTube it myself but doing so right from ps4 would be great

It's quite disappointing that this didn't materialise for whatever reason, particularly when Cerny talked about the feature on live television.

Really Sony? How much longer? The upload to Facebook is not even working right now for a lot of people. And that.. Is the only option we got.

It seems Sony are resting on their laurels with this silence around updates. I prefer Microsoft's approach with being more open about them.

OR...

because they (Sony) don't have a year of self-inflicted PR wounds to counteract they (MS) need to make more noise about anything to help develop an Xbone-positive conversational narrative, which going by comments on this thread, is working.

Afraid not, any feature update announces need to be coordinated by all SCE territories. Once given the green light an announcement will be made.
Is it still on track for this month? I hope we aren't waiting until the very end of the month, or possibly even into next month.

I just hope it comes out this week.

It's taking too long and this update still probably misses a Youtube integration.

Sounds like a great update. Looking forward to it.

Would be fantastic if it fixed support for the Samsung M9T 2TB drive (currently only works properly on some PS4s, not mine unfortunately), but I suppose that's a longshot.

Yes MS knows software and it shows. And the software team is all in one place i think. Sony's resides in Japan still right?

There were bluray software updates throughout the beginning of 2007 on PS3. Meanwhile we still don't have 3D bluray support on PS4.

What kind of broken ass logic is this?

It's not broken logic.

From a PR perspective, MS have a reputational issue to overcome - getting positive press coverage is easy, but influencing community discussion is another matter.

To overcome this, one way is to ensure there is a constant stream of good news of one kind or another - lots of tweets & PR about system updates, how the interface is improving and so on - and an emphasis on ensuring there's something new-ish being talked about all the time.

It's how they're going about getting back positive mindshare, and getting back control over as much narrative space they can - a less generous way of describing might be fanboy service, since this is all stuff that console warriors will be lapping up and echoing in forums all over - the messaging being:

MS listens!
To YOU!
Xbox One is always improving!
You're a part of that process!
Buy an Xbox One and be part of this exciting community led upgrade path!

As I said, it's working too. Just a quick skim over some of the larger fora & boards and you'll see this stuff being reproduced ad inifinitum & ad nauseum, and as I also said, it's something MS wouldn't need to do if they weren't coming in off the back foot.

There have been many comments on this board about how MS needed to get away from the power comparison narrative - which if you look at Phil Spencer's comments in the Edge article linked to in the relevant thread:

He is also keen to stress that Microsoft is doing the best is can to ensure that Xbox One’s performance continues to improve in order to match the power of its rival PS4.

they seem to have taken on board since this is a tacit admission of the gap between the consoles. So what this approach does is promote a positive thing that's solely about the Xbone - the OS updates making the experience better, and its a message that can only be really leveraged in social media.

It's a good approach and change of tack IMO.

Nice to see someone from SCEE posting here. I know Mochuuu from SCEA posts here to.

Hopefully we do get some info regarding when this update is going up.

Huh? Worked fine for me the last time I used it, and there's the Twitter and message option (if you have two PSN accounts).

I don't have the time to explain all the reasons why this is so silly, but I'll just give a few quick ones.

1) OS updates don't materialize overnight. These XB1 updates were in the pipeline probably since launch. They immediately knew what people were complaining about, and they set a Spring goal to address those issues. They appear to have hit that goal. Microsoft also says they've built the XB1 OS to allow them to update it on a much more rapid schedule than the 360 allowed for. They planned ahead to make their OS more flexible this gen.

2) You're suggestion that Microsft is doing this because things aren't going very well for them. As if any company that does good things now needs a negative reason motivating that action? Does apple release iPhone updates because the phone is selling poorly? Is it possible companies just release these updates to make their product better, and Microsoft just seems to be better at that than Sony? This isn't exactly new. The 360 OS was always a step ahead of the PS3 OS, and surprise surprise we're right back to that point now with these new consoles.

3) What does your logic tell us about Sony? They're less concerned about the glaring flaws their OS shipped with in November? Is that supposed to be a good thing? Because you seem to be spinning Microsoft's motivations as a pitiful response to bad news.

You realize the PS3 3d Bluray update came out in Sept 2010 right? Software takes time to write and test. Sony doesn't want to mess up and break ps4s or expose a security vulnerability. This is one of the strengths of Microsoft's 3 OS strategy. Since the Security layer is separated they can release updates onto the game and app layers with less worry of breaking their security.

I agree that Sony really needs to get a big update out.

We're in month 5 now since launch in North America. Suspend and Media Playback. They're overdue.

Maybe Sony wants to drop everything at once instead of monthly updates that keep them ahead without hassling customers every month with things that should be done from launch. I think the illusion of having frequent updates makes it sound better. But imagine if February, March and Aprils update dropped all at once. The impact would of been hell of bigger than a monthly update. I just see Sony adding everything at once, troubleshooting with stability updates, and then once again drop another huge one somewhere later down the line.

I'd definitely prefer that kind of approach, as the system updates aren't installed automatically, like the game patches.

Since when does an actual development roadmap that has predicted these things have anything to do with PR?

Please re-read what I've written, and take into account my response to your first point. This is PR, not engineering, and you seem to be completely blind to the year-long negative press MS got over Xbone

3) What does your logic tell us about Sony? They're less concerned about the glaring flaws their OS shipped with in November? Is that supposed to be a good thing? Because you seem to be spinning Microsoft's motivations as a pitiful response to bad news.

No, just that they don't need to turn a negative narrative about the PS4 around so don't have to appear to be permanently engaged with their userbase to make it seem like they're paying attention.

Since you appear to either not understand or simply willfully ignore MS' PR situation, and how by turning a pre-existing roadmap into an rolling PR event they are taking a path which will benefit the brand as a whole there's little point in continuing this conversation.

Aaaand I've just seen your post history.

Which is what I'm getting at. It's PR - they're taking something they were already doing, and turning it into a Big New Thing.

If the situations were reversed I suspect we'd see Sony doing something similar - small but frequent updates to get people talking, keeping the brand front of mind and all the things that happen when you strive to constantly be in the news and you want to have a contained, limited and positive message.

I think it's normal. Xbone OS was a real mess at launch, so they had a lot of stuff to fix. PS4 OS was a lot more mature and stable, so they just did some minor fixes.

why does the ps4 need to be updated for twitch to start archiving ps4 streams? wouldn't that be a change on twitch's end?

or does the ps4 have to pass up a flag when starting the stream that says "archive this", basically
