So Dark Souls II [PC] is launching in less then a month and there's no footage of it.

Objects still pop-in on the PC version: 19:00 minute mark. When he rotates the camera to the left (where the guy is sitting) you can clearly see those barrels materializing out of nowhere.

Metal shaders improve the quality of some enemies. The turtle guys look so much better now.
Yeah, after the GB video finally felt like loading, I can see that swords and stuff look shinier - which was one thing I really hated about the console version.

I guess I'll get it day one after all and hope for some mods down the line.

Yeah, the metal shading does improve the overall look of the game a lot. The shields have gorgeous reflections now. Armors, weapons, shields look significantly better than on consoles. I'm positive that the Mirror Knight will look really good in this version.

Wow, the Pursuer looks really different. I assume they fixed the Mirror Knight thing where the lighting wasn't being displayed properly on his armor?

Need to see that Mirror Knight footage for the PC version! Would they get to it in the Quick Look?

any info on M+K?

The gamespot preview, they were saying good things about the M/KB support.

Giant Bomb Quick Look, they tried it for about 10 seconds.

I love Pokken!
same here. What gives?

I wish I could watch this 60fps footage but the Giant Bomb player refuses to start, tried it on three different machines and it just wont go! Save us Gamersyde D:

Load another video and change quality from streaming to progressive, it worked for me.

Nope, they stayed on early areas to prevent spoilers.

If you have problems with the GiantBomb player, try clicking Quality -> Progressive and HD before clicking the play button.

I guess we won't know about resolutions over 1080 until launch then, huh? The resolution options showed arrows to the left and right of 1920x1080, but I don't know if the menu rolls over or if it just continues to higher res.

This is the highest available res on the slider, FYI.

well glad M+K works fine now (spend a lot of time to set dsmfix right)
still gonna wait for DS2fix or some mod to change button prompts

I don't think journalists have the technical ability to downsample.

Granted, it is not difficult at all, but these are the same people who on the Giantbombcast this morning were confused about Steam Offline mode.

Not downsampling

1440p monitor. Surely one of the outlets with the preview build has one above 1080p.

Yeah that's so strange.

Okay so at 32:25 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2xPah553Ew#t=1955) he lights another brazier. When he walks around with the torch, you can see the shadows its casting. When he lights the brazier, there are shadows. Once the torch gets put away, they're gone. But when he goes back to the ninja turtle door brazier, the shadows are there, torch or not. Hopefully this is a bug that is fixed at launch and its enabled on all braziers, or someone can at least mod it to make sure the dynamic lighting and shadow casting is set for all braziers and sconces.

OMG! The binoculars are back!? I totally missed them on my first run, lol.

Saw a stream and:
they're on that cliff right straight ahead of you when you enter Majula from Things Betwixt

(I don't know if the giantbomb stream already showed that. I haven't watched all the way yet)

The odds of me double-dipping are high, if only to play with friends who couldn't buy for PC. Doesn't mean I'm not frustrated with the treatment this game has received.

The incentive to put up with hackers in the PC port of DS1 has always been how gorgeous the game looks with DSfix. Not sure that a few framerate and resolution tweaks are worth having to worry about backing up my saves and whatnot.

I am really bad at this stuff, so though I might ask you guys:

My laptop has
-Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3610QM CPU @ 2.30GHz
-8.1 GB RAM
-Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
-NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M

It seems like my GPU is the only part that fails the recommended specs for DS2 but it's still good enough for minimum, while my other specs are more than good enough for recommended.

Will I be able to run DS2 and not have it look like crap? (I don't need that good graphics as long as it runs smooth and is very playable)

Thoughts? The PC version only looks a bit more washed out because YouTube compression, so don't judge it for that.

I'm very confused by the phrasing here.

So you are referring to DS1 in the first sentence, that part is clear, but what about the second sentence?

It seems you take the exact opposite stance despite describing what DSFix actually does.

Like someone pointed out to me yesterday, the recommended specs probably don't mean anything. The reviewers/previewers on IGN and GB both stated that their machines aren't anything too crazy in terms of parts and price, so you should be good. I'd hold off a couple days after launch until more people get it.

Oh hey Johnny, remember me pestering you in your stream while you were fighting the "crab" boss?:p And thanks for the heads up. I will probably hold off for a while and see:)

Some highlights having watched that QL:

  • The PC version actually has a framerate unlike the PS3 version which is a continuous mess going from the low 20s to the upper 40s depending on what's going on the screen.
  • Reflections on metal objects give the game a polished look that's clearly missing in consoles. There's even a slight glare surrounding your character that is missing in the PS3 version (and which was already present in the first Dark Souls). The Pursuer looks really good and, as a consequence, I'm sure the Mirror Knight will greatly benefit from this.
  • The game looks slightly darker now. The interior halls of Forest of Fallen Giants are a good reference point. Unlit areas don't look as bright as they do on consoles; it is a shame that we didn't get the lighting back.
  • Enemies that already looked ugly on consoles still look ugly on PC (Conquistador mobs as an example), however, their reflective and shiny armors make them feel and look contextually "all right". Heide's giants looked like utter crap on the PS3; they now look just badly designed so I guess that's some extra points.
  • Loading times are similar to those in the original Dark Souls on PC. This is (for me) the best selling point of the game since you will be seeing those screens somewhere between 300 to 600 times during your first playthrough. I just did the math: 600 loading screens on PS3 are equal to 3 whole hours (180 minutes) doing absolutely nothing but staring at the TV. The same 600 screens on PC will take 40 minutes. That's almost 5x faster.
  • Pop-in is still present in the PC version but to a much lesser degree.
  • Menu lag is completely gone (Praise the Sun!).

And this was installed on hard disk, not an SSD, for Giant Bomb (IGN never specified). It's gotta be a flash of a screen on an SSD for sure.

Without a serious re-texture pack from the community, we're never going to get the original version, it seems. Very sad, while at the same time, I'm very happy that this version runs and looks a lot better than the console versions.

Running on low-spec platforms: good enough for me then. I've gotten over the shadow thing even if it's slightly annoying, but that sounds alright for what I prepared for.

God, we got fucked over again. From lied, they put shit all effort into the PC port, they barest of bones.

Maybe with Dark Souls 3.

But I'm still upset.

lol whut?

This is INFINITELY better than the DS1 port.

As far as ports go, it actually has options that I rarely see on anything other than PC exclusive games. That performance section for the game to automatically downgrade the graphics if your FPS falters is pretty neat.

Sure, it's not the reveal footage but as far as console ports go, apparently it's crazy well optimised and it does look significantly better.

No idea where your hyperbole is coming from.
