Super Smash Bros. for 3DS Summer 2014, Wii U Winter 2014

My offer stands, I'll put it on this page too:

Still looking, but I've seen multiple different uses of the term "winter" regarding when it refers to on certain sites. There's a Polygon article about the games of Winter 2013 which covers January to March of that year.

It'd be a shame if people decide to skip the Wii U version because of the later release date. While I'm anticipating the 3DS version I think we all know that deep down the game won't control well on the 3DS pad.

That reminds me, have Nintendo said what the connectivity between the 3DS and the WiiU version will be?

They keep saying that they will discuss that at a later date. I guess if Wii U isn't out until winter, they've got plenty of time to discuss these feature as that version approaches.

Okay guys, fine, I'll bump this later if it's not out in early-mid December.

I would buy into your theory if I thought Nintendo had a plausible heavy hitter for the holiday in its absence.

I doubt its Zelda since Hyrule Warriors is this year and I doubt whatever they have cooking NFC wise would do it.

I really doubt Nintendo would release Smash in February and miss out on the holiday sales, the one month and a half period where retailers probably will push the system.

This is kinda gonna kill my hype for the Wii U version since I'm going to play the shit out of the 3DS version. The excitement of trying all the new characters and the veterans enhancements won't be there by the time I get the Wii U version. =/ The only thing to look forward to is better graphics, different levels and better online.

The Wii U version will do fine. They are essentially different games. Both of these versions will move many platforms and sell many units.

IM PUMPED.
I'll be buying both!

Right, that I have seen before, but we did end up crossing that time period already.

That "Winter 2014" relase date for the Wii U version means, in my opinion:

-The game will release in early 2015.

-Nintendo has indeed given up on Wii U and they will stretch the release dates of all the games still in development as long as they can until they can announce a new console/develop a new strategy.
Or they just need more time to finish? Isn't the most simple explanation usually true?

We don't even know what the exclusive Wii U content will be, I think you are being a little cynical to the situation. Let's see what Nintendo does at E3 and then judge the Wii U version.

Maybe different modes and versions exclusive characters. No one knows.

I am happy that we'll get the 3DS game sooner.

I don't think the Wii U version releasing later will have any effect on its sales. People who really want the 4 persons in one room experience they had with the previous games are going to get the Wii U version regardless of if they already have the 3DS version or not. Tournament players will get the Wii U version regardless. People who just want the better looking game to play on the big screen will get the Wii U version regardless.

3DS version looks fantastic.

No one's really missing out, it looks excellent. I can't wait to experience it in 60fps/3D.

To me the main question is if they honestly just feel it won't be ready.

That's why I would kind of expect a delay all the way into March where sales are still pretty high, it's still in the fiscal year, and it actually gives them a significant amount of extra development time if they're skipping out on the holiday period.

Just like how smash brawl came out during the holidays and didn't get delayed.... Ohh...

GAF was legit shook when this was announced! LoL

They just announced a new Inazuma Eleven for Europe today to be released mid-June, it's certainly possible since it's always been slated for this summer worldwide. Frankly, Zelda or not, banking on a musou game for a big holiday title is asking for trouble, especially on a failing console.

Oh, i'm not talking about Zelda Musou. I'm talking about the next mainline Zelda that's going to be announced at E3.

Real talk, releasing the two versions the same day would hurt the Wii U version more than releasing the 3DS version first.

You guys are overestimating the effects of the 3DS version being released first and the Wii U version second on the sales of the Wii U version.

Nintendo had Mario Galaxy, the first 3D Mario game in what, 5 years?

What would Nintendo's big holiday game be this year if not Smash? Yoshi?

If it was this year, they would've said December 2014. Damn.

Or at least "by the end of this year" or something along the lines. Release date is up in the air for me, could be November could be early next year, then again they did say 2014.

I wasn't planning on getting the 3ds version, but damn this sucks. Whatever, I'll live.

How is the Wii U one sent to die? People are losing their shit over the Mario Kart 8 visuals. I'm guessing the much better graphics, extra exclusives etc will make people double dip or wait for the superior U version. Have fun playing Smash on a 3.5 inch screen I guess?

SM3DW had better graphics, extra exclusives etc over SM3DL and yet a lot of people were burned out from SM3DL or just didn't consider is it worthy buying a new console for SM3DW. The same happened with NSMBU. And DKC:TF.

Yes, the Wii U version look gorgeous, yes and the Wii U owners will buy it, but how many people will buy a new console for the prettier version of a game that they played months ago? It didn't work with the previous games, why it will work with SSB?

At list MK8 has more things going and it is the best looking game on the system.

This is pretty smart of Nintendo. Obviously the Wii U version is the one people want more. If they released the 3DS version the same day or after the Wii U version, I probably wouldn't have got it. Now that it's coming this summer, I'll get it to tide me over until the Wii U version.

I don't like to hate on Nintendo, I really don't, but the fact that they come out and admit that they made some stupid moves and then immediately continue the trend is making it hard to ignore. I like to think that a company that's been in business as long as Nintendo should know what they're doing, but they're pulling out all the stops to prove me wrong. This is like if they released Titanfall on 360 six months before the Xbone version.

The best we could hope for in this situation is that they lied about the versions being identical (content-wise), and the WiiU has more characters/whatever else a smash game could have.

Wait a second...
After thinking about it, maybe releasing the Wii U version makes some sense. I used to think it would kill sales...well it might...but let's see.

- We don't know the Wii U's modes yet.
- If the U has amazing modes, it will get people to double dip for Christmas.
- If the U had amazing modes and came out before the 3DS version, the 3DS version could probably suffer a bit because of being an inferior product
- The two versions have kind of interfunctionality so we'll see

But mainly, if the Wii U version has a good mode and comes out around Christmas, I can see a lot of 3DS people buying it twice. If it came out before the 3DS version, Wii U owners would maybe not buy it. (I know I wouldn't if I had a 3DS.)

Speaking for myself, if I had a 3DS, I would double dip day one for both versions. If the Wii U version came first, I wouldn't. But it all depends on how good the mode is....

well, i mean, i don't think the Wii U version was going to do gangbusters anyway relatively speaking, so this makes sense to me I suppose.

I'm not quite sure why people are upset the Wii U version is coming Winter 2014. Anybody with common sense expected that from the beginning, before they said a thing.

Y'all should be happy, you're getting a version of Smash way earlier than expected. If anything, it seems the 3DS version is being bumped up! Summer is like, almost here already!

And having one version come out before the other means that the team can then focus their efforts on fine tuning the Wii U release to perfection, at the end of development.

I also don't understand why people think this is going to negatively impact Wii U version sales. If they released on the same day, do you somehow think that situation would have been better? How many people are going to fork out $100 for two games on the same day?

My biggest question regarding the release dates is this - We know both games are going to have roster parity. So does this mean we'll know the entire roster of the Wii U version, when the 3DS version releases? Unlockable characters and all?

Since the two versions have the same roster, it'd be genius if there was a hidden character that wouldn't unlock until the Wii U game was out.

Smash Brothers. Wii U already came out and nobody even realizes it.

Oh, right, haha. I wouldn't count on that. They'll inevitably reveal it at E3, but to release it this year? A game like Zelda is the kind of game that would run into the most development issues, but then again we don't really know how large or ambitious it'll be, it might even be the return of top-down console Zelda.

I did think the existence of the 3DS version was going to hurt the Wii U because it continues the strategy you mentioned of having versions of each game on both platforms. Having the 3DS version come out earlier though... that's gonna hurt.

The unified software platform really can't come soon enough for them.

Winter 2014

Stop being so naive. We are all Nintendo fans here. We all know that in April, if a game has a release date of Winter 2014, that shit isn't coming out until February 2015 at the earliest.

It's a shame when die hard Nintendo fans lose faith in the company.
