So I'm like 7 years late to the party, but Company of Heroes is fantastic. Seriously, the decline of WW2 games makes a geniunely good one feel so intense and exciting. The atmosphere and chaos of war is just compelling, the controls are so simple yet allow for so much depth. I was kind of expecting to be overwhelmed as I've never really played RTS games before, but gameplay-wise, CoH is easy to learn, but a strategic challenge to master.

Oh, so no-one else played Actual Sunlight? That's fine, but do check it out if you have a chance. Especially if you like To The Moon and/or good writing. Note that the tone and themes are quite a bit different in those games, but the delivery is very similar (essentially, they are both simple RPG maker games with text as their main storytelling medium and some skeleton interactivity to guide you through it).

It's on my wishlist.. been tempted to pull the trigger on it, but didn't know how long it was. I think I read 1 hour.

I was so-so on To The Moon to be honest.

I like unique games, especially ones that put forth experiences (at a decent price vs time mind you).

I was interested in seeing how it stacks up in comparison to this game:

Thanks for posting an impression, was hoping someone got around to trying it.

Hmm. I got these games with the THQ bundle. I'd never considered trying them out.

So you're one of those that don't care about the actual quality of the port, which by all accounts is very good, but only about the game not looking like in the old screens/videos.

As someone who spent 60 or so hours with the PS3 version it's still an incredible shame because the contrast between areas is huge in terms of lighting quality and given how last minute those changes must have been(no baked in lighting to replace the removed kind) there was plenty of reason to expect it to be back for the PC version.

It's nice that Durante says the texture quality looks better, but the 4K downsampled shots so far haven't been particularly convincing given that area was the prettiest in the console version as well and also showed plenty of abysmal textures. PC version is 14 GBs compared to the PS3's 6 so obviously there will be a difference and I look forward to seeing it.

My advice: don't get the orbs of adventure, or whatever they're called. Easily saves a bit of time. Maybe skip the shanties. The messages in bottles at least have some relevance to the plot, and try to make it meaningful to collect them all by presenting a side story. The diving stuff is interesting, so try to do that. The forts are easy enough once you've upgraded your ship.

Well, I wasn't really collecting any of that stuff anyway. I tried reading the messages, but lost interest rather quickly. It's not that any of this is particularly bad, it's just that you have to repeat everything so many times, it really starts to become routine after a while. Even the story sort of falls apart. It's nice when you steal the ship during that storm and you get a cool dude as your first mate, and there capital letters in the subtitles and stuff. But then it becomes largely incoherent, downplaying all the cool things that were introduced later, capitalizing on the tired assassin mythos that got old halfway through the first game and doing a really poor job of connecting the separated story missions. This may be exaggerating a bit (especially if you lower your standards a bit by comparing it to a lot of video games considered great), but I must say that the writing is just not very good in this game regardless. I see it as a missed opportunity: you take the coolest theme ever, write several characters that are actually interesting and likeable (a feat for Ubisoft Montreal), create some impressive graphical technology including the best representation of the sea in video games ever, you also get some top-notch music and some great game mechanics that just make you feel good (the naval battles, didn't really care much for the usual AC fare, personally) and then what? You fall in the typical AC trap: the story stops to make any sense about 1/3 into it and the player has to repeat every single gameplay element so many times it looks they are meant to stop having fun at some point.

That's encouraging. Seems like most people think it's weaker than the other games in the series, so my hype levels have dipped to a manageable level, lol.

The major complaints I've seen so far is the levels not being interconnected (the game sort of has the Demon's Souls system, with a central hub and several linear paths starting from it) and the level design itself not being particularly good.

I don't really agree with these complaints. While having a huge interconnected world like in Dark Souls is fun, it doesn't really bring a lot to the experience aside from the wow factor. Instead of that in Demon's Souls and Dark Souls II you have a consistent hub, which you have to return to quite a bit and see how it changes as you progress through the game. The path system is also quite a bit handier, as you don't have to constantly backtrack through all those areas (you can teleport between bonfires off the bat). Some people liked that, but I really prefer it the way it's done in the latest game (which is the same to Demon's).

The issues people have with level design I don't really understand at all. On the contrary, I haven't seen a single bad level in DSII yet (I'm halfway through the game or so). They all offer a very consistent level of quality, being really enjoyable, whereas the first Dark Souls game had some really poor levels (Lost Izalith) as well as some rather mediocre ones (Anor Londo; it looked great, but it didn't really work that well for me). And all the worlds are larger in the second game to boot (I see about half of them so far, by the way, so my opinion might change later).

Dark Souls II is also much more articulate about its online features, optional bosses and other fun distractions from the main course. The covenants are much better and it seems you have something interesting to do almost anywhere you go. So the game just feels much more polished in that regard. Not sure, maybe people thought that some of the jank present in the previous game was a part of its charm, but I certainly didn't.

Anyway, that's what I think so far.

First off, thanks to Tellaerin and The_Super_Inframan for Half Minute Hero.

I entered both raffles before heading to work and ended up winning two copies..

So, I'm passing the second one along.

Be sure to thank The_Super_Inframan for this copy!

Sure, they fixed a few of the things that the last port got wrong (GFWL, resolution options), but the rest of the points such as "60fps out of the box" have no place in a comparison as the original Dark Souls wasn't designed to run at 60fps. The port of the original fixed and stabilized the framerate from the console version, which the port of the new game does as well (to the tune of running at 60fps constantly).

...what? Still valid. Port of DS1 is better than DS2, that's the comparison.

This isn't necessarily aimed at you, but when people say that CoH is less micro-heavy than StarCraft, I just don't believe them. In SC2, if you macro decently well (manage your economy and production), you can grab your big-ass army and attack-move into the middle of an enemy's base and win. Sure, there's Blink micro, marine splitting, and other crazy-ass cutesy micro, but it's largely unnecessary when playing against mortals.

In CoH, the macro side is much easier, but I personally find the micro side to be overwhelming. Making sure your units aren't getting flanked/suppressed, making sure your vehicles' weak spots aren't exposed, and making sure each troop has the proper subweapon upgrade is a lot to manage. Part of it is that I'm really bad at CoH and I've spent far more time in SC2, but I actually think the latter is far easier to learn.

If you're halfway through the game then you haven't seen the garbage it has in store for you. There are probably 4 Lost Izalith equivalents in Dark Souls 2. And the disconnected world works to some degree as it allowed them to go crazy with some of the areas but for the most part the places get smaller and smaller as you go along and despite there being far more areas than in previous games there's not really more content. Given their size the levels can't really be compared to how Demon Souls handled things either.

Game is still pretty great, but it's by far the most inconsistent game in the series and you will start to understand why soon enough. Not to mention two of the covenants don't even work properly and they completely screwed up the invasion system. I was human most of the game and got invaded maybe 3 times. Really silly.

You mean the same Grief who spent his time writing up a post about how there was hope that the PC version could still be like the TGS demo footage based on some screenshots and stuff?

And there's no "arguing" here. I'm merely pointing out contrasting viewpoints to Grief's overly positive ones.

Just pointing out the evidence that was there, nothing more.

The overall quality of the port is looking very solid, there is no denying that.

Yep, it took me like 70 minutes. I think I've read everything there was (there are plenty of optional parts).

I remember playing Depression Quest a year or more ago, they are quite different. DQ is closer to a traditional game where you have a goal, you can achieve it and have a happy ending. That imposes some specific limitations on how it works and what story it may tell. Actual Sunlight is not like that at all, it's very much a short story told with a degree of interactivity and visual aids, and also a very personal, autobiographic account than a general study of depressed people.
There is no happy ending either, I'm afraid, although that's not really a spoiler.

Whoa there, Captain Optimist... :p

I don't see how Dark Souls II can get credit for killing GFWL -- or even for not using it at this point. And as far as Steamworks goes, what else were they going to use now that GFWL is pretty much gone?

Just comparing it to Dark Souls 1

Higher resolution support is only meaningful to the handful of people gaming on 4K displays. Compared to the majority of gamers who probably don't have a 4K display, it's kind of a moot point.

Not true. Many people run Dark Souls 1 at much higher resolutions and downsample to 1080p, as do I. One of the many advantageous to DSFix, the sequel scales natively.

I'm not sure who in their right mind would want to play a Souls game with M/KB -- it'd be like trying to play an RTS on a gamepad.

You don't have to, but the choice is there. I mostly brought that up as the menus can now be navigated via mouse, nice for those that want that option.
Frustrating to navigate through menus that aren't properly configured.

So incredibly optimized that they had to drop the lighting engine. ;)

Not sure how this is relevant at this point. Sure it is gone and that is unfortunate, but does not hurt the quality of the port, only our lofty expectations and desires.

And based on that one shot you posted (looking at the textures on the character's hair specifically), higher could mean very little. Technically 1.1 is higher than 1. :lol

Yes, technically higher. Durante seems to be very confident on the increased quality of the textures, AO, etc.

My initial intention was just to state the facts of the port. Your arguments were more extraneous points that don't lessen the quality of the port, just your perception. Things such as, 'only useful for people with 4K displays,' or, 'who would play Dark Souls with M/KB?' are merely fallacious arguments, rather than addressing the validity of the port.

Well, we'll see. Although I like it so far, the areas getting smaller is a pity indeed. Which covenants don't work properly, by the way? I assume it's the blue sentinels and the blue apostles?

As for invasions, I didn't have many invasions during my regular playthrough of DS1 either. There were plenty when I went to mass PvP areas, but not much elsewhere. People in the OT said that they get much more frequent in NG+, because of the lifted soul memory limitations. Overall, I felt that the first game, Demon's Souls, handled invasions the best: probably due to the fact that everybody had an unlimited red sphere. So I'd say the invasion system was screwed up since Dark Souls already, to a degree.

Dark Souls dropped far more red eye orb shards and I got invaded plenty of times throughout my playthroughs. By the end of Dark Souls 2 I had maybe 4 invasion shards.

And yes, the Blue Sentinel/Blue Apostles/sin system is completely broken and it's a terrible shame. There are more covenant issues but they are further along so I won't spoil them.

Ah yeah, thanks for writing this up. I thought the interconnected world in Dark Souls was really cool, but I agree that in the end discrete levels isn't a bad thing in and of itself. I'm not a fan of having warp available right from the start as it takes away some tension in the best case and just opens the door to lazy design in the worst case, but it's probably necessary for Dark Souls 2 since the world is so much larger.

I've read conflicting reports about the quality of level design, with some people saying that there are a lot more areas carefully crafted to the level of Sen's, and others feeling that there are some lazy parts in Dark Souls 2 as well. Still, I think the consensus is that the endgame doesn't take a nosedive as with Dark Souls post-Lord Vessel so that's a huge plus.

Whether the game actually winds up being better than the original or not, I just want more Souls so I'm looking forward to it!

I should've done this already with AC4, I doubt I'll play it before we can get a Steam key for $5 like with AC3 now. Which I'll then probably buy anyway.

Dark Souls 2's end game is easily many times worse than the post lord vessel elements of the first game. Going by the OT it seems that was a common point of view but perhaps not. A lot of the end game is just short levels that take 10 minutes to beat or terrible areas that throw 40 annoying enemies at you in a straight line to a boss. A lot of those areas were also hit the hardest by the downgrade with one major exception that is unbelievably beautiful and really makes the inconsistencies in the visuals all the more absurd and apparent.

Damn, you're the anti-Tenrius. Hype bubble popped. :( Did you think the boss fights were good at least?

So you're one of those that don't care about the actual quality of the port, which by all accounts is very good, but only about the game not looking like in the old screens/videos.

No, I care that it's a good port, but my hype was extinguished when the evidence of a severe downgrade in terms of visual fidelity came into the picture. The core gameplay is what matters, but I find it hard to get excited or want to support something where the finished product wasn't the same as what people had come to expect based on what had been previously shown.

Y'know how Binding of Isaac is a very good game at the core but some people couldn't get over the visual style? It applies to Skullgirls and a ton of other games too. The game itself could be great, but having it be visually disappointing -- at least in terms of what I myself was expecting based on previous media.

I got a key for 30$ and plan on checking it out. Hopefully it clicks. Hopefully the gameplay is so engrossing I don't spend my time thinking about how it's not the same as before. I'm hoping this isn't one of those times where a game series I have a ton of love for ends up being marred for me.

As someone who spent 60 or so hours with the PS3 version it's still an incredible shame because the contrast between areas is huge in terms of lighting quality and given how last minute those changes must have been(no baked in lighting to replace the removed kind) there was plenty of reason to expect it to be back for the PC version.

Yeah, it wasn't a knock on you -- I know you're super interested/hyped for the game and I wanted you to be right on that more than anyone.

And for the most part, yes.
But until I play it and experience it for myself, right now it's still a solid port of a console game that had a surprise downgrade. :p

Fair enough on the Dark Souls 1 comparison context... I missed that originally.

I don't know enough about downsampling -- I just run things natively if possible at this point and I'm generally happy with the quality. Sometimes I use SweetFX. But that's the limit of my tweaking graphics at this point -- my old man eyes haven't seen enough benefit to be worried about getting that type of stuff working on my setup. So I'll take your word for it if you say that having support for higher resolutions makes this easier to do for people who are interested.

Can we confirm that Anno 1404 does not have Tages?

Store page hasn't been touched and the newest patch removed the DRM.

I wonder if this went live early, as UBI hasn't even pushed the beta update they had been working on.

No, back before AC4 released, AC4 and WD both had a Russian price error on Uplay that made them like $1.50 each.

I can't check, but I think they didn't charge people for Watch Dogs yet and I think they only charged me for ACIV upon its release. I wasn't paying attention, so I'm not too sure.

EDIT: The Uplay homepage has "Log in to enjoy a full Uplay experience!" written next to a huge "CONNECT" button. This is... inviting.

Oh, okay then. I think you should ask the support. I submitted a ticket way back before the ACIV release and they told me they would honor my preorder, its was a smooth experience.

I just got past that 6-hour tutorial in under 10 hours. I kinda enjoyed it.
Haytham is cool, but I don't understand why Ubi would try to stretch the tutorial into something this long. I mean, they could have let us play as Haytham without doing all the trivial stuff, but now it plays like "Toddlers' first Assassin's Creed".

I can only guess they have looked at the stats and 95% of people who play as Assassin's Creed game never, ever, touch the series again.

So a long tutorial each time is probably justified for the new players.
