Good to see they still can't bother to give us proper video codecs for the web browser.

I want to properly stream Youtube (PS: I know youtube.tv does work) and other video websites on my PS4 browser. I want flash content to work properly too.

I want custom soundtracks and the ability to upload pictures/music/videos to my PS4. Why can I use my PS3 as a multimedia box and not my PS4 again ?

Bitstream as opposed to PCM? Shouldn't degrade the quality. Bitstream is like sending a .rar file to the receiver to open. PCM is like the PS4 opening the .rar itself and sending the unpacked data to the receiver.

Bones party system sounded like a mess, of course they needed to react. You don't drop this amount of money on a console to watch Netflix or steam media.

That sounds quite unreasonable, you cant just spin up a deployment system in few weeks due to pressure, this process would have been designed and implemented far before its release so im not convinced their pushes are a reaction to performance, seems like knew well in advance they needed to be agile enough shape the OS quickly. The fact that they've listened to their fanbase to turn around key parts of the system so effortlessly is an indication of that. Someone asked for a instant update option a few weeks back, and now its already there.

And there isnt a goal post they're trying to reach, seems like its going to be continuous and aggressive (based on their example so far).

It's easy to demand things, but very few people know the amount of work that goes into implementing these features. e.g It would be incredible dumb to put flash in the browser. It's notoriously CPU and memory hungry. It would sacrifice the current speed of the browser and speed of switching between browser and games. It will need to be updated frequently since flash has a number a security issues. All of this for what exactly.? Better support across all porn sites and flash ads? PS4 has the best HTML5 browser across all gaming consoles.

Well like most OS in the market... even Windows uses some existing open source libraries.

PS4 OS is based in FreeBSD... the same BSD core that Apple based the Mac OS and iOS... that if you back to really old days will be surprise that ti is based in UNIX that give birth to Linux, Android, etc.

Well you will see everything in the computes history come from the same roots.... nobody reinvents the wheel.

It's not like they have some unique feature that someone else will copy if word gets out. You be hush hush when you've got an ace up your sleeve that you don't want anyone knowing about for as long as possible. But a firmware update? They should be touting it to keep their fans excited. Unless they have an ace....?

It's like streaming from a PS3 with a CC.. Much better than using the share feature.. YOu can stream in full 720P/60fps if you have the CPU/CC and net that allows it...

Maybe, dunno, but their announcement did say this: "There’s a lot more coming in this update as well, so stay tuned for more — there will be plenty in the update to excite everyone."

They're not being hush hush, they already announced the update and its features. Next step is announcing its availability, which will happen when it's ready.

The update was announced on the 19th of March.

It's now the 14th of April.

They need to be more forthcoming in regards to FW. This is the one thing that MS is nailing.

Setting your PS4's audio to PCM won't give you 5.1 in PS4's Netflix app. You have to set PS4's audio to Bitstream DTS ... or Dolby ... to get actual 5.1 in the app. I've placed my ear to my surrounds and no audio comes out when PCM is selected.

Doesn't matter, your receiver should still play the correct codec. With Bitstream DTS set on my PS4, my receiver reads Digital Plus.

What the receiver shows when playing games or sitting in the Netflix app not watching anything (it's a 7.1 receiver but the two back surrounds are currently unplugged):

And playing one of the movies in Netflix that supports it, the receiver shows it's correct:

And once you change the different set of PS4's audio options while playing a Blu-ray movie to Bitstream, you get the lovely DTS-HD LED. mmmm DTS-HD.

My only problem with Sony's release policy is their "soon" regarding release dates or actual releases. They told us a couple of times that a release date for DriveClub will be revealed "soon", 2 times, more than a month ago.

Just don't tell "soon" if you can't even give a time frame.

I bought a PS4 a few weeks ago when this news came out because I thought the update would already be out by the time I got a capture card with HDMI support. Now I'm just waiting...

The only thing that could make a difference is some receivers will only apply their post-processing to Bitstreamed audio (for whatever reason) and not to LPCM audio. Also, some people prefer Bitstream just because it makes the "Dolby Digital" or "DTS" lights on their receivers turn on haha.

Can't believe were about to hit a month since they announced this and still no word. I would've expected a press release on some of the new features. MS has had a couple firmware updates announced and released since this. Come on sony! Fix sharing already. God I'm so tired of losing videos

I still have no idea what setting to use on my Onkyo receiver. Usually when something is in it'll switch to Dolby or Dolby EX, but it also has DTS and Neo 6 among other things. I never know which to pick and what to set the PS4 or XBO to.

I know come on Sony!! I got a Xone yesterday and in my opinion,the one os is vastly superior than the ps4.. Twitch app, youtube, customization, etc

I agree that the XB1's OS is better but apps don't have as much to do with the OS(maybe some of the integration). You wouldn't want to complain to google because there wasn't a HBO Go app.

"Soon" should always mean within a month or less. If it is later than that, it isn't "soon".

Well that sucks.. so you cant have lossless 7.1 game audio and 5.1 netflix with the same audiosetting?

Nope. That's the biggest issue right now for me. If I want to watch Netflix I have to switch my audio setting. However sometimes I'll forget and end up playing games in Dolby or DTS and it makes a huge difference in quality switching to lcpm.

I started a thread complaining about Sony's lack of information regarding both announced PS4 games and firmware update. The complaints are still valid.

Any word on if they are patching the 5.1 bug with audio for the center channel going over HDMI to your TV and not to your center channel if your using optical audio and HDMI for video?
