NPD Sales Results for March 2014 [Up4: FFX/X-2 HD]

I think that this year's E3 will be Microsoft's opportunity to start to really turn things around.

Of course, I also think that this year's E3 will be Sony’s opportunity to completely crush any chances Microsoft has of turning things around.

MS has to come out this E3 and blow people away, they cannot go another year like this.

Honestly though, I'm not sure what they can do to right this ship though. Price will not do it alone, seeing how I highly doubt you are going to be able to get a system cheaper than the deals that already happened this month.

Remembering:

Target had a $449 bundle. Xbox One, Titanfall, and a year of Live.

You can still get the X1/TF bundle at numerous outlets for $449.

People are thinking that a SKU that drops the Kinect is going to change the game, it will not. IF people really wanted that option they could make out like a bandit by purchasing a TF bundle and selling the Kinect and game now.

TF bundle would mean you can get a Kinect-less X1 for under $379, assuming you sold TF and the Kinect for $40 each.

Zune HD pulled through? harSon pls.

Do you even know what I'm arguing? My initial post that was called out was the fact that consumers should be happy that Microsoft is getting their asses handed to them, because a hungry/desperate Microsoft is good for consumers because they usually bring their A game. Whether that desperation results in financial success is an entirely different situation all together, but that's a point I'm not arguing. With that said, absofuckinglutely the Zune HD was a great piece of hardware. There's a reason it's still recommended to this day to people who are looking for a quality dedicated MP3.

It's not only the lack of exclusives that hurts, its the PS4 marketing deals for Destiny and Watch_Dogs. There is already a Destiny PS4 commercial! Stuff like that is huge for the perception of the masses.

Agreed. Like with Titanfall ads ("Only on Xbox & PC", showing only XB1), alot of people didn't know there was a 360 version at all, just because the ads didn't mention it.

That's why I politely asked for assistance from my fellow GAF users who might know more about this subject.

It's not wrong to ask these questions. It's cool to know these facts.

The Vita's disappointing sales forced Sony to merge both PSP and Vita together in order to paint a less horrid picture for their portable business side. Hence they had to combine both PS3 and PS2 together too as they can't single out those platforms while combining the other two; it would make it too obvious.

I hope for your own sake you won't bring this topic up again as to me, I think it's usually better to just 'lurk and learn'.

I would have been glad months ago when they were publicly acting like fools to see this result. Now though? No. This is just sad.

Is there anything they can do to win a month over PS4 in 2014 at this point? The only things I can think of that might do it are either new Halo, or price change, and neither seem as exciting as Titanfall was hyped to be.

The Xbox One cannot be "saved" by games alone. It's more drastic than that.

It's a fundamental problem with the hardware and the price.

Also, much deserved congrats to Infamous also. Been hearing amazing things about it from friends, and I think it looks awesome personally. The pre release footage looked boring and disappointing (always amazing visually), but what I've seen of the game since release has looked a lot more challenging and fun than the pre-release footage led me to believe.

Also, damn good voice acting, and I found myself a lot more interested in the story than I was anticipating.

I have to admit I wasn't expecting the PS4 to outsell the X1 under any circumstance considering all the Titanfall hype/push/marketing. This has to be incredibly worrying for MS...they better regroup, drop the price of the system asap and have a killer E3.

Damn I don't understand how ps4 is still selling like this. It's an awesome console tech wise but the games minus infamous just aren't there vs the x1 imho. I own both and the x1 gets most of the game time.

This momentum will only get better for Sony when the big guns drop. I'm seriously in shock. MS needs to focus on Kinect and rally the casuals. Problem is with their current price point the casuals most likely aren't paying attention yet.

lol, no.... Sony wont be dropping price anytime soon.

You dont sell everything you produce and drop the price... those days are gone.

XB1 had Titanfall, dropped the price to $450 for the bundle and still got outsold. XB1 doing $399 changes nothing.
You are naive. Go back and look at how price competitive Sony were for PS2. They kept that advantage hanging over Microsoft and Nintendo's head for years until the gap was all but unassailable

I think Microsoft's problem has been the fact that they keep getting pushed against the wall in every consumer electronics market they try to break into. Why can't they bring their A game to start with?

I'm gonna say this right now; it's been a fun, fun thread.

Well, there's that, and there's also this:

We're witnessing history in the making right now. For the first time ever, we're seeing a video game console manufacturer reverse a downward trend in their brand appeal. By all accounts, the roles btwn MS and Sony should be reversed right now. MS had the up gain w/ 360. They had the muscle. They had the big hitters and favor. Sony's comeback w/ PS3 in the end was, in all honesty, something that would never have happened if last gen was a normal gen. It should be PS4 facing the upward struggle, not XBO.

And yet here we are. Watching Sony do what Atari couldn't. What Sega couldn't. And what Nintendo fluked into doing so it doesn't really count* .

The Piper was supposed to be at their front door, now they're in Microsoft's living room eating an appetizer.

* Not my personal opinion.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
Well it's Sony itself that made me ask the question. Why would any company combine their figures and not give their individual totals? That seems like awfully fishy behavior.

As far as I know they did not sort out their PS2 and PS3 numbers for almost three years. And as suggested by an article I posted earlier, they've been doing the same with their PS3 and PS4 numbers since October of last year.

I have been trying to find a source in their financial reports that sorts out the two numbers but I cannot find it myself. That's why I politely asked for assistance from my fellow GAF users who might know more about this subject.

It's not wrong to ask these questions. It's cool to know these facts.

You do realize that Sony has released JUST PS4 numbers as being over 7 Million, right? You don't actually believe that is combined with PS3.

Did the right thing
So ps4 still outsold Xbox one despite the Titan fall bundle and price drops? And in the US? Are you kidding me?

So they blew their only chance of leading this year basically. Gotta give it to Sony man. This is some ps2 stuff right here

Sony really has Microsoft in a vice strategically right now. All they need to do is clamp them hard at E3 and maybe throw in one or two major surprises, snap that to the back of a string of games that are either potentially big and have exclusive marketing deals/content on them (Watch Dogs), but other genuine exclusives that are either fairly big or promising and a beast variety of indie games like Transistor.

I really don't know what Microsoft can do to respond, since I don't think they're ready to drop Kinect just yet.

I mean we can emphasize Xbox One is still doing relatively well, but this was its biggest game release for at least the next seven months. And possibly the entire year, period. Titanfall was hyped up as the Xbox One, next generation game to get. If this is the "height" of its off-holiday months, where is the floor going to bottom out?

It won't be constantly selling by Q3/4.

We don't actually know that. In fact, there's good reason to believe that it will continue to have problems meeting demand the rest of this year. Even if they build some inventory during the slow summer months (not a given), Q4 will blow through that inventory and then some.

As long as PS4 flies off the shelves, they need not worry about matching any potential Microsoft move. Once their production capacity gets ahead of demand (and can stay there), then they can think about it.

I don't know why people think Microsoft are going to resort to bizarre desperate measures.

The system is doing well. It's selling software.

The PS4 is simply performing better.

Xbox doesn't have the same worldwide appeal the Playstation did, the US has been one of the main focus points. It's not good news for them to be losing out on holding the momentum from the 360 in their main area, even if it's nowhere near Wii U levels.

Now is the time to pick allegiances, the war of the mods is just beginning.

I side with Zeliard. Can't hate the Kingdom of Heaven avatar. Plus I really like his title.

Because it doesn't seem that MS is content with being only second place. And I seriously doubt they are happy with losing their strongest market to the competition.

Are 3DS sales so bad Nintendo can't even spin something positive there?

Did the 3DS have any big software this month? Besides, the system has already hit its peak, it will inevitably continue in its decline. Shame too, it's a great system.

Holy shit at PS4

Also, worth to note that Titanfall is multiplatform title, which is natural for it to be on top place. It would be very bad if inFamous SS, a platform exclusive beat it.

When's the next big multiplatform game? Watch_Dogs? It's a given that it will sell better on PS4 but I'm curious more than ever what the gap in sales will be.

look back at those days and how much money they actually made as a company and how much they make now.

PS4 is sold out in half of the europe today, they certainly wont be dropping the price just to win forum war, it makes no sense, their sales would not go up - they dont have production for it.

They are keeping PS3 at $270, and you think they will drop PS4 to $349.

Thats just ridicilous.

It's going to be funny if MS announces the new Kinect-less SKU during their conference and people cheer.

Also, new term I just made up. (God I hope I'm the first)
The Kinect-less Xbone should be called the Dis-kinect-ed.
Haha. I made a funny.
