Call me crazy, but I think things can still change greatly.

Is the PS4 not the most powerful console in the run? The most powerful console doesn't win, and I'm sticking to that. If the opposite happens, it will be highly unusual. Right now, the PS4 is selling to those early adopters, based mostly on specifications and promise, that will pass like gas. Even the PS2 had DVD as a killer application, before the real software kicked in. So we'll see what happens in the long run. I think the picture can change dramatically very quickly.

LOL, this argument.

Hate to break it to you, but consoles like SNES & PS2 had beaten the competition, & they were more powerful than the others (being Sega Genesis/Sega Megadrive & Sega Dreamcast). Also, PS4 is both more powerful and more cheaper.

That doesn't really make sense. They're buying the system for the system itself? And what do they do with it?

It's not always about being the cheapest option. There are enough consumers out there and we are early enough in the process that the best option can also be a strong influence.

Everyone assumes lay people are so stupid and full of whimsy. They're buying it because it is "shiny"?

I think it's fair to say that lots of people want to upgrade to the latest and greatest, and don't need a terribly compelling reason to do so. They aren't necessarily waiting until there's something they want that's only available on PS4.

Shiny, new and with word of mouth and hype behind it. They're playing games on the new system that they can already play on the old system. That says it all doesn't it? If the games are the same on the new system then it has to be something about the system itself that's making the system worth buying.

Those games are what people want to play. It's going to be the same this year. And probably next year too. Playing a better version of Battlefield 4 is what makes the system worth buying for most people.

Why is that hard to understand?

Why is this going for something "shiny"? This is a completely rational decision making process.

I was almost completely sold on PS4 after playing The Last of Us, while conversely my negative opinions of Microsoft grew during the last couple years when they kept acting like Gears and Halo are all the games i'd ever need and then of course the DRM stuff. PS4's system seller imo is 6 years of future gaming on a system that is currently cheaper and better than xbox one. This year i'm already having more fun than i would have if i stuck with ps3, better versions of cross gen titles and the occasional exclusive like Infamous and Resogun, and this will be further reinforced every year as more publishers ditch the last systems and go current only.

Please be a joke post, if not... god help us.

People played the inferior version of multiplats last generation, it wasn't a big deal then apart from those who got angry at Digital Foundry. Sony's got it right this gen for me, they looked at their weakness' and fixed it.

I think things are playing out like it's supposed to. It's like some one else said earlier in the thread, the XBOX 360 had a one year head start on the ps3 and it cost $200.00 less but the ps3 still caught up. Not only was it a one year head start for the 360 but it was the jump from SD to HD, shit, even I was tempted to buy a 360 the first time I saw a next gen game but I was still playing Ps2 games. My point is the playstation brand is more popular than the xbox brand worldwide. If both of them start out at the same time Sony should be selling more.

Those are all games they can already play on current systems. Playing those games on the cheapest package isn't the PS4. It's spending nothing and continuing on the consoles they currently use.

Those games might be what they buy once they get the system, but they aren't the reason they're buying the system. They're buying the system because of the system itself. It's new, shiny, has better word of mouth and is cheaper than the competing new shiny system.

They are, though.

The most angular console always wins though, and this gen that's the PS4.

This is ridiculous. Play BF4 or FFXIV on PS3 at the low res, barely-30fps and then go to the PS4 version and tells me it's negligible bc you can play the same game on a "current system".

They are literally entirely different experiences and consumers are smartened up to that.

Most people are playing 3rd party titles and they want to play them yearly or at least in the future. Ps3/360 support will dry up soon so if someone has the money then its not a hard decision to buy a ps4 now and enjoy those 3rd party titles with better graphics/performance. Its a 5-7 year investment and people know that, customers arent idiots, they dont just buy a 400/500 dollar consoles because they are shiny.

Well according to most popular opinion on GAF only thing that matters is library of exclusives already out ;)

Lot of people want the best version, that's why there are some cross platform titles sold better on nextgen. It is the big reason ps4 selling in US and UK. Just like 360 vs PS3 in US and UK.

PS market seem still popular in Inner Europe so it'll sell even if it's reasonable most expensive or inferior hardware. Japan market is one might be hard to tell for future since xbox one is not out yet. I don't think it will do anything for both in Japan but normally PS sell better.

For a while I would put you above that stuff but you slipped here.

The most powerful console 'won' the 7th generation. PS3 has sold more than Xbox 360.

Let's not forget that this time, Playstation's reputation is vastly improved thanks to MS PR fumbles and we live in the high-definition era where people want their media to be the highest quality possible.

Not only that, but when before has the more powerful console been a decent amount lower in price?

True. Not to mention Playstation has always had the largest library and will most likely continue to do so. Then there's the extreme value of PS+. You can game on Playstation without having to buy games, if you really can't afford to buy more.

TGO

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
To all those who believe that TLOU:R is a major killer- you seemed to forget that although TLOU sold like cakes, it didn't expand the userbase at all, it won June NPD at the time but XBOX beat PS3 again in NA.
Ps3 sales only increased by something like 10,000 units compared to may, TLOU didn't move units, only sold to the same user base.
Tlou:R won't change that all of a sudden, it's not a system seller.
You can't really compare a late generation title to a new generation title, GT6 sold like shit on PS3 but there's no doubt it would've sold millions on PS4
A bigger userbase doesn't guarantee bigger sales, late in a generation( PS3 for example) there are 80 million users with different tastes and loads of games available and being released to compete with each other, sales decline more and more as time goes on because of this, there's nothing wrong with the game it's not inferior to its predecessor, it's because there is more choice for the user
That's why sales of early gen titles are high and then decline to only shoot back up and for the same series on a nextgen console
Obviously you do have games that generally sell loads but a lot of titles benefit from a new generation, TLOUS may even sell more then it did on PS3 if the thirst is there, which it maybe.
And new console owners want new games to play on there new console, they move from one to the other like a virus, 360's early days is evident of this as even bad games sold millions.

Previous Gen: Xbox 360 sells more than PS3. Has "inferior" exclusives but better multiplat games. Cheaper than PS3.

"Exclusives don't matter. The 360 has better multiplat games. It's also cheaper. The market has spoken. Sony in trouble, etc"

This Gen: PS4 sells more than XBO. Has "inferior" exclusives but better multiplat games. Cheaper than XBO.

"Omg what are people playing on this thing I don't understand Knack sucks"
