But makeup does those things. There's also a lot to be said about how the medium of film captures black skin.

Ah, your "evidence" is the "fold" video. Got it.

Black people do get lighter/darker depending on sun exposure the same way other races do, right? Just checking.

Why do you think this is specific to Beyonce? It's not. It's a problem with media and marketing perceptions. Is there evidence that Beyonce specifically asks for lightening and/or nose touchups?

Ehh... None of these are specific to Beyonce. And honestly even the "fake pregnancy" thing is not a big deal to me *raises flame shield*. I mean she will be a mother at the end of the day regardless if she actually carried the child. And she won't be the first woman in the world who did such a thing.

My nose doesn't shrink when photographed, and when dealing with a competent photographer, they manage to capture the black skin tone. Like for Idris Alba, Kelly Rowland, Westley Snipes, Angela Basset, Don Cheadle, Whoopi Goldberg, Bernie Mac, Tracy Morgan, Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae, Nick Cannon, and so on and so forth. This is not an issue to act brand new about. Either its all happening and poor old beyonce doesn't know anything going on, or, She approves selects, or her publicist. So, she might not be noticing that she is getting more pale by the years go on, photographically. Or her publicist does. Shes in the dark, of course. She isn't aware of any of this.

I'll say that I didn't mean 'skin lightening' to mean the bleach deal or whatever. Just outwardly appearing whitewashed in every single one of your advertisements.

I don't think a fake pregnancy is a big deal, but it does promote some stigma that having problems giving birth is something to be shunned or hide. Its an unfortunate event to happen when they could be a very powerful couple adopting as well as getting awareness out about the issues that every day normal people go through. But, for all I know -- she could have had something happen to her that caused her not to be able to have children. So, moving forward.. for whatever reason they faked that kid, it happend. And I wont bring that up.

The funny thing is, in Beyonce's documentary Life is But a Stolen Dream, and her GQ interview from last year, Beyonce spoke at length about how she's very protective of her image, to the point that she keeps a vault of all pictures and videos she's taken over the years and she's very selective over which photos she allows to reach the public and be used in magazine spreads.

Her strict rules regarding photography is exactly what led to this photo going viral:

RfpEBym.jpg

A photo literally nobody noticed or cared about...until word got out that her PR team asked the site that posted it (as part of a group of photos taken of her Superbowl performance) to take it down.

Point is, Bey likes to paint the picture that she's super particular and hands-on when it comes to her image...but we're somehow NOT supposed to believe she has anything to do with the DOZENS of covers she's done where her skin was lightened with photoshop? GTFO.

the fake baby too?

And the skin lightening..?

Damn, that publicist aye. And lets not pretend that Beyonce is under the supreme control of her publicist. Else they wouldn't have let her stage a fake pregnancy. Sure, they are the ones that officially asked the internet to remove her photos. And not a gmail from beyonce herself. Of course.

BOOM! And what about that fake islander accent in her last song? Or her new fake "hard" pop music like she a ganster.. psshh

Are you really comparing Beyonce's skin tone to people like Idris Elba and Wesley Snipes? Seriously? Let's put aside how she looks in photography for a second...in what world is her skin anywhere close to that dark in-person?

I didn't realize such intense Beyonce conspiracy theorists existed.

So let me get this straight some of you think Beyonce, faked a pregnancy, has had multiple surgeries to maker her look better, and has no talent. Hmmmm

This reminds me of all the Michael Jackson hate, the Janet Jackson hate, and even the Whitney Houston hate. I guess when you are at the top of the mountain everybody wants to knock you off. Either they were too white or not black enough. Or they had these secret lives where they are part of some underground society. It seems this only happens with black successful artist. I mean whats the point? They all deserved the success they received. If I had money to buy out an entire floor of a hospital for the birth of my child, I definitely would.

Beyonce has more talent in her pinky finger than Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Gaga, and who ever else you put in front of her. This song represents her struggle as an artist to always be perfect. I know some of us cannot relate to this as we are not in the public eye all of the time. But it hits at something deeper, like TLC's "Unpretty". I dont see other female pop stars doing anything like what Beyonce does. Dropping an album out of the blue and selling 1 million in the first week, thats insane.

And as a black person, yes we do get lighter and darker. We can get tans too. Im the darkest of my family but my sister and brother have a far more lighter skin tone then I do. And guess what, when they are in the sun for to long they get darker.

Also "Bow Down" is one of my favorite jams. She knows she the best, she has the awards, performances and album sales to prove it. I wish MJ had a "Bow Down" song. Hell I'd love to see Janet and Beyonce duet on that track. They are the queens of pop and no one does it better than those 2.

"Hold up, you all think Beyonce did all this weird shit.. why that reminds me of Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson...."

Not a good start.

Nope, just saying that black skin is managed to be photographed, photoshopped all across the spectrum. But for her, it gets lightened above and beyond. Its not a conspiracy that her photo's are noticeably lightened more than others.

So let me get this straight some of you think Beyonce, faked a pregnancy, has had multiple surgeries to maker her look better, and has no talent. Hmmmm
.

You didn't get it straight.

Beyonce is talented. Shes had a nose job, and is photoshopped with lighter and lighter skin. Lets not confuse people condemning whitney houston for being "too white" to mean the same thing as black people being photoshopped to appear much muhch lighter. The "too white" condemnation is along the same lines that any black person knows, when you act in a certain way. Its an ignorant commentary. Pointing out Beyonce promotes a fake ass image isn't in the same ballpark.

edit;

And it makes a lot of sense seeing that Sia wrote the song. This is just a case of a bad talent/content combination.

So this is like a strap on belly...

nA8elEO.jpg

& Katie Couric was in on this pregnancy ruse as well?

As if this is a smoking gun? As if people sadly don't just have these specific instances of Beyonces pregnancy to refute the folding baby? Being bloated and having more fake baby foam isn't any indication that shes has a child. No one needs to be In on it. Just like no one freaked out and ran to the press when her uterus collapsed in front of them.

I'm distracted by the AWFUL WEAVE in that photo.

Seriously, for someone worth almos 400 million dollars by her damn self Beyonce has literally NO EXCUSE for having the WORST hair game in the industry.

I just can't get over it. Every time I see a photo of Beyonce I spray my edges.

She also sold a line of maternity clothes didn't she?

She could have been pregnant during folding-belly-gate but wore something to accentuate her belly for the sake of the TV show. That seems more in line with the type of "control" Beyonce likes to have over things, and how focused she is on business. "Bump" wasn't ready to work for a walking advertising for her clothing line, so fake it.

And why she avoided picture taking in general once she got larger is easily explainable by how vein she seems to be.

Not a good start.

Who's talking about their weird shit? Im talking about their talent and what they bring to the table with their music. And when they are at the top of their game then something has to be wrong with them. That they are cheating, not real. I mean what did Beyonce do to some of you to make you say awful things like that even if its on a forum. U wouldn't say any of that to her face would you? Sure were just having fun but I take offense to it sometimes. I feel as though black artists never get the benefit of the doubt ever. Everything said about them has to be true, even when clear evidence suggests otherwise.

Without hesitation I will say MJ was and still the greatest. Better than the Beatles and Elvis. But when you talk about Mike you bring up all the nonsense. While on the other hand Paul McCartney and his garbage music can do no wrong. Madonna looks like skeletor but no one hates on her pale skin or skinny frail body and they call her queen. Janet will outperform Madonna any day of the week. But her talent and career accomplishments don't matter cuz she showed her boob on live tv one sunday afternoon.

I mean this thread is about her song and video and it turned into how Beyonce is some fake being who doesn't deserve to talk about vanity.

Plenty of Madonna haters exist as evidenced by your post. And yes, people always talk about her appearance in these derogatory ways. Madonna did a lot for women empowerment by being a real person and encouraging others to embrace themselves and their sexuality, not as objects but as independent entities. Even when she was younger and gorgeous, she actively talked about perceptions of beauty and challenged the status quo of beauty and fashion. Bey has always represented herself differently, beauty bomshell 24-7. And that's fine. It's just hard for me to swallow that she goes from "Bow Down" to "Pretty Hurts" .. You just can't have it both ways.

That's always just looked like normal skin fat folding to me. It's not like the baby takes up 100% of the bump women get when pregnant, so why is it weird if a spot in the front rolls when she sits down?

Also, could someone post a picture of the outrageous skin color Photoshopping that keeps getting brought up? These all look like her natural in-person (concerts, music videos, etc) skin tone at various stages of tanning or different lighting to me:

To those saying that she's not fit to sing this song, I guess because she's too pretty..? It's called "PRETTY Hurts," not "being average looking hurts." It's about her confessing that she's grown up with the mantra that being pretty and saying inoffensive things was what she was used to because her parents raised her that way, and how she wants to put a torch to that. It's actually what her whole album is about.

Considering how patted and prepped she was by her father to be the perfect pop star since birth, she's probably the best actual person to sing this. lol

Exactly. She knows better than others how it feels to be confined by the constant expectations of beauty and perfection. Bringing up her borderline obsession over her image doesn't refute her point, it bolsters it.

If she was really confined by constant expectations of beauty and perfection she'd put some damn moisture on those ends!

God, I just can't get over the dry-ass hair. Walking around like her strands are begging for sponsorship. For just pennies a day, you too can keep Beyonce's hair bathed in shea moisture...

Girl just coz she doesn't look like a soaked poodle at all times like some pop girls doesn't mean her hair is crusty and dry.

I can understand this. It just seems kind of like empty words since she's queen of promoting the "image" of perfection. I sincerely hope she steps down of that thrown and allows herself to be a little vulnerable. I think it would help me and other people understand and appreciate her esp since most agree that she is talented, we just don't relate because her persona seems so stilted and persistently so.

Using that gif as evidence is so silly. You can clearly see that as she prepares to sit down by placing her hands between her thighs, the fabric gets bunched under her forearms and lifts the fabric forward as she hunches over. It's collapsing because the dress is falling back onto her pregnant belly.

The TIME cover seems to coincide nicely with the message in the song. She doesn't look primped and perfect on there at all.

Oh please, Madonna didnt do shit for women. Yeah she sang about sexuality, who hasnt? Where is her Rhythym Nation? Beyonce has taught many women to respect themselves first. And why can't she sing Bow Down. Whos better than her right now? I mean is she wrong? All other female artist want to dance and sing like her. So yeah Bow down bitches! Shes flawless!

Like I said she conceding that she is a perfectionist and that she is absorbed with her image. She is admitting that this is a flaw of hers. Pretty hurts.

Also I have a different take on the song bow down then some of the posters of this thread.

Ok, we don't have to tear Madonna down to lift Janet up. Both of them can be described feminist pop stars.

Besides, at least neither of them are Beyonce--who was literally singing about how a woman should be subservient to her man until her PR team gave her the memo that there's money to be made in positioning herself as a feminist for her Tumblr audience. Or are we going to forget that lyrics like this aren't a part of her repertoire:

I can do for you what Martin did for the people
Ran by the man but the women keep the tempo.
It's very seldom that you're blessed to find your equal.
Still play my part and let you take the lead role.

I gotta say those lyrics don't prove your case at all.

'Kids, respect yourself by controlling and self-admittedly obsessing over your image.' Fantastic message.

I didn't say she can't sing Bow Down, I simply pointed out the contradiction between that and Pretty Hurts.

Are we looking at the same cover?

I don't think Bow Down (or Flawless) contradicts pretty hurts.

Beyonce is literally singing about how in a relationship between two people who are every other way "equals" the man is still predestined to "take the lead role" and run the show, while women "keep the tempo" because that's how Dr. King willed it...whatever the fuck that means.

Nah, I see something going concave, you can look at the length of her dress to see that the fabric isn't dramatically being pulled up or lifting fabric- inches, in order to make folds of the fabric that then relax on a concave surface, after collapsing. Look at her legs and the fabric which stays at her knee.. now sure, it could be a latex sort of fabric, but how does that explain a taught flexible fabric folding up into the negative space of her stomach area. Its either loose and flowing, or taught and stretchy. I've just been doing visual effects stuff all my life. Its opinion to opinon on the video. But, I think it makes more sense that there was a soft surface underneath her blouse that inverted/bent when she bent down. Because babies don't fold like this, and you could never find any video like this of a uterus collapsing without there being very harsh circumstances for the child inside. The liquid doesn't just go to her legs/chest as she bends over. It stays in a dense sack. It was proably an expensive version of;

Just saying thats a normal reaction of the human body while pregnant to bending, isn't that believable as we know pregnant women, have seen pregnant women, and have felt how tight the abdomen area is with a child inside of a ball of liquid. Then theres renting out a hospital floor. Along with the folding baby, and no pictures of her pregnant, outside of one where shes clearly bloated.

Its not a case of lying eyes.

It's a maternity dress, it was created with room for her belly. When she leaned over the material folded. Is this not more logical than your theory?

They lyrics you posted don't express that at all to me. If Beyonce wishes to a supporter to her husband then that is simply her pejorative and her's alone. The lyrics in question aren't necessarily saying this is what all women can only hope aspire too. This doesn't disqualify her from being a feminist. Feminism means she has that choice as a woman. She can be a house wife, out chasing whatever goals she wants for herself, or both. Shaming women for wanting to be a house wife is not feminism.

She's not saying the queen of perfection but rather when she was young and aspiring artist she too dreame of being in the position she is now. Now she's at the top and she earned her due. The song is likely a response to the criticism about her above. Keep that in perspective.

Taught against the belly one minute, room for her belly to grow in the next. Wizardry.

Edit: Showed this to some of my MD colleagues, one of which is a pediatric specialist. They all laughed. "That's fake." They're just Dr.s- what do they know?

Not really, because the fabric folds into a concave area. Not just small wrinkles, on the surface of a plump abdomen. There are 2-3 large "folds" The ball/sphere is being dented. I feel that the fabric goes into that area-and creates a dark shadow from the light above, because its going deeper into her than the surface of her body. I've never seen material folding into the muscle of a human being, which it would be doing if it was the case and she had that tight-pregnancy abdomen. Its more logical if you ignore the folding into her stomach and the dark shadows, for sure. You can also see the perimeter of the foam which makes a large U shape and in fact, gets fabric caught under the LIP of the foam.

Look, the belly was obviously fake. Pregnant women don't sit down like that and fabric doesn't behave that way with a pregnant belly underneath, look it up.

Who's shaming her for wanting to be a housewife? There's nothing wrong with that. It's the implication that "male takes the lead" is and SHOULD be the default relationship framework even between two people who are equals. Because, you know, relationships can't be a mutual team effort. SOMEONE has to lead. She doesn't frame it as though it's a personal choice she's making. Hell, the song that verse is from ("Upgrade U") is basically about women finding and validating their worth in their potential to better their men's position socially. These themes permeated throughout much of Beyonce's music until about 5 minutes ago when Beyonce watched some some TED Talks on Youtube and decided to be a feminist.

Better late than never, I suppose, but she doesn't get to rank among female pop stars who presented strong and consistent feminist messaging in their music for years (and were raked over the coals for it) just because NOW she has a damn clue and NOW she wants to sing about how hard it is to be hot.
