Play Nintendo - Announcing Nintendo @ E3 2014

I do not think that 100-200 people in a room will affect any announcement.

Do you really think things would be any different if Sony revealed that in a video an dnot e3?

Would the Twilight Princess reveal been as memorable if it weren't for the incredible audience reaction? Actually now that I think about it, I guess "effective" was a bad choice of words. "Memorable" was the word I was looking for. People look back at that Zelda announcement so fondly not only because it was an incredible trailer(it was) but because the audience reaction was so insane. Miyamoto coming out brandishing a sword an shield to the cheers of the audience was the cherry on top. It will forever be remembered as one of E3's greatest moments. Same applies to what Sony did last year.

This Nintendo event, while I'm hyped for it, likely won't give us any moments like that. I guess I just wanted to see a large crowd of people in a room genuinely get excited about Nintendo announcements again :(

This worries me. With so much emphasis on smash, it's like they are sorta telling us there is not much else. At least that is the vibe I get. Sad that this year's public event will be Smash exclusives as opposed to a smorgasbord of content.

But if they reveal any secrets now.. people will whine that there's nothing new announced at E3... just curious.. which do you prefer??

The reception to the event was only because of the shitty stream and people not liking the content. Nintendo has improved their streams since then and content has nothing to do with whether its a press conference. And 3D world was amazing

The general image going around was that Nintendo isn't even attending E3.

I'm super excited for this, but anyone expecting ACTUAL Smash pros with normal tournament rules are going to be disappointed.

That would be fucking awesome though.

Nintendo will be fine either way, but I can't help think of Sony's last E3 event and how that completely shifted their momentum in the Western market.

While the groundwork had already been laid, I honestly think they delivered the death-blow to MS during that presser (no online authentication, "games, games, games"), leading to the real-world sales and mindshare they're cruising on today.

I don't think Nintendo ever hyped E3 this much before "This is the one you've been waiting for." Something big must be coming.
That's funny, I had the reverse reaction. My assumption is that they are doing all this extra presentation because they are just going to be showing things we've seen before. I'm not expecting any giant announcement.

That said, I am super excited about this. It's a shame that all of the streams are going to take place during the day. I hope there will be a way for me to watch the coverage/highlights at night once I get home from work on those days (I'm sure there will be).

The stream of the Smash Tournament sounds like the best thing ever. I can't wait to watch that.

Last year totally wasn't a disaster when it came to reception for Nintendo... oh wait. Can't believe the defenders bring up the same shit now as last year. Just like Nintendo, not learning a thing.
And since this confirms that they still have no clue what's going on in the real world, my expectations are again dead (though I'm sure they'll find some way to disappoint, as usual. I'm just gonna guess Zelda will be another lowtier effort like the current Marios)

You are complaining that Nintendo can't do huge worlds in HD. There were about two trailers with gameplay and a direct with the game demonstration. It was far more than 2 minutes. What do you think is going to be different from what we saw so far which is a lot to what it will be when released? Dude please stop.

I never said they really can't do a huge open world in HD. I wrote they are late in HD development. X is not in sales now, is it? We do not even know when it will be released. One year ago we saw a short trailer. Recently, Nintendo has shown us few minutes of gameplay but could you tell me what is impressive in that footage? It was just an explanation of the fight system. And that's all.

I am just suspicious.

last year i think microsoft or nintendo had the best shows. just trailer after trailer until the thing was over. but if there was one thing that became abundantly clear was that watching sony, ubisoft, ea, and microsoft was that press conferences are looooooong and not always talking about the things you want to hear (sony-guy talking about tv for 10 minutes, and generally transitions between presenters which has some dead time in between).

and last year i noted it was odd that nintendo, the company with the worst online infrastructure had the best method of presenting their stuff, and that they had been increasingly internet-focused as a means of controlling their message.

this seems to be a far bigger push than last year. while last year i think they hit all the right notes, it felt like nintendo didn't really want people to care a whole lot about what was happening. at least with this it seems they're a lot more interested in pushing the presentation aspect. hopefully this and the tomodachi direct, and the smash direct are a sign of things to come.

Well put. I wholeheartedly agree with you.

I was pretty upset last year when they chose a Direct instead of an actual Press Conference, but I was impressed that they didn't waste any time and went straight to the trailers of their upcoming games. This year is definitely looking to be better.

Will you really be worried about it if they show the new Zelda and X, give dates and then drop more megatons on top of that??

I guess...? Yeah in the end it won't really matter but IMO there's really nothing like a life conference and I'm not exactly a fan of them experimenting with this sort of thing when their home console ain't doing so hot.

I'm honestly surprised at the turnaround I'm suddenly seeing here. Not that they aren't doing some cool shit like the Treehouse stream, but wasn't everyone against this idea last year? Not to mention the stream meltdowns...although they're using Youtube now so that probably won't be a concern this year.

People that are saying they don't care about not having a live audience are missing the point.

Nintendo is trying to expand their business and get people to buy the Wii U. By hiding themselves in a corner and only showing their new products to people that are already Nintendo fans isn't helping their business. Having a E3 presser gets them mainstream coverage and new eyes on their products.

It makes me think Nintendo is slowly trying to let the Wii U die and will return to E3 in a year or two when they are ready to unveil a new system and a new philosophy.

I'm going to humor this. Are you purposefully ignoring that Nintendo had an event specifically for the mainstream press at last years E3? That invites were sent out to them? That the gaming media had their own separate event? TIme where they can freely exam the various games. How is having them sit in a crowded room better or more effective?

Do you think they won't be sending invites to various mainstream news organizations when the do so every year? Do you think the mainstream media shows up on their own accord and aren't invited by Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, etc?

Not having a live stage show doesn't mean they'll be negatively covered by the mainstream media. People were saying that would be the case last year and I don't believe it ever turned out to be true. If it had been true then Nintendo wouldn't be doing this again. That they are says, at least to me, that they saw no negative difference but instead perhaps had more control over their message and it was cheaper for them.

Okay, that video was so freaking funny and I'm already so damn exci--WHAT!? No Press Conference again!? Nintendo!?... You know, I would normally react like that at last part, but not this time... That video and that Smash Bros official tournament announcement is so damn good and enough to forgot my rage about Nintendo not doing a Press Conference again this year.

They show confidence that the stuff they have to show us at E3 is literally going to blow our minds so the hype I'm feeling is real! The only downside of all of this is that we would not see live people reaction's when the new Zelda U will be revealed :( But bring it on, Nintendo! You've been doing great on promote your stuff lately, definitely a huge improvement over last year's broadcasts!

It's truly amazing how you can't criticize Nintendo on NeoGAF without 30 people jumping on you saying you are dumb.

I grew up with and love Nintendo. I'm going to call them out when they do something stupid.

MAINSTREAM media counts. Of course all of the gaming websites are going to cover what Nintendo is doing. What Nintendo needs is the regular news media of the world to cover them.

Having a small booth and an online stream that only Nintendo fans are going to care about isn't helping them any. They need a big presence and a statement where the mainstream news takes notice and talks about them in a positive light, not a footnote.

Currygan

at last, for christ's sake
funny, but I still think Nintendo is missing an huge opportunity by not holding an actual E3 event. Again

Do you actually expect them to spill what they are going to reveal or show at E3. They need to save the surprises and contents for the audience, and pushing things that are already known by public which is Smash and Mario Kart.

Overreaction at best.

There are 7 Best Buys in Vegas. If smash isn't at one of these then I'll be traveling out of town to BB... I'm amazing!

I prefer their approach last year when we knew nothing. Honestly, I would be so much more hyped if the event the announced was 4 games, including Smash Bros with 3 never-before-seen titles announced the day before. Not doing that just makes me wonder why not? They need to instill confidence that they have a sizable number of content for their console on the way, not just smash and not just previously announced things. They need that confidence shown. That's just how I feel anyways. With the way things are, they aren't putting that confidence front and center, that's how some of the people I've talked to feel anyways.

Hyped? Very, but also slightly concerned.

They feel different you have have a live conference in a big hall with lots of people. You know there is a reason why the camera shows the crowd lots of the time during live events. Something like last year's Sony conference where they announce no DRM and price of PS4 won't feel the same if you are watching in a pre-recorded video with announcer just announcing.

There is a reason people get excited at live conference events, even if it's watching at home through livestream. Things like MWC, and apple event where they announce new products like iphone or ipad.

I think the best comparison would be:

Watching a movie premier at the TCL Chinese Theatre with the stars and press coming
vs
Watching a movie at your TV, livestreamed

The end result is the same movie you're experiencing but the overall experience of both events are totally different.

Smash will be their big holiday title, so that's what they emphasize. You can expect Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2 and maybe stuff like Yarn Yoshi releasing during the end year season too, but that's probably pretty much it.

Stuff like Zelda, X and the new Fatal Frame will release next year (with Zelda being the holiday title and swan song of the Wii U).

Well, I have to admit that video was pretty good. I am a little disappointed that there is no live conference again though. Zelda U deserves the big stage, and I think with exclusives like Bayonetta 2, Smash, X, Hyrule Warriors, Fatal Frame, SMTxFE, Yarn Yoshi, etc, they had plenty of ammo to deliver a kick ass presentation. I think the Smash tournament is a great idea though, and I might need to get down to Best Buy at some point to try out Smash 4. Hopefully the lines won't be too long since people consider it a "dead" system.

New games and announcements, June 10 at 9AM PST (12PM PST / 6PM CET / 11PM JST). It'll be similar to last year's presentation (no live conference).

And Hype deflated to zero.. Nintendo never learns of their mistakes, I fully expected a live press conference and yet again a lame direct. Very disappointed.

Funny video though...

I don't agree with Nintendo and Microsoft being at the same level. What you said about Microsoft is spot on, but Nintendo's Direct last year had Iwata explain things we understood once we saw it. It was irritating.

While Sony's beginning portion was weak, once they started talking about games, they talked about games.
I'm super excited for this, but anyone expecting ACTUAL Smash pros with normal tournament rules are going to be disappointed.

Why wouldn't you expect that? Who are top Smash players? Some random guy from the press? It is an INVITATIONAL. Who else would they be inviting lol.

And we saw For Glory mode and it is clear that is what Sakurai thinks is competitive play, so you're right that it won't be normal since only FD would be allowed, but there would be no items as well. There's no reason to expect it not to be like For Glory's ruleset.

Nintendo was covered by the mainstream media last year and I don't see that changing this year.

Again, isn't that the fault of the Press, not Nintendo? They shouldn't have to kiss ass to have their information reported properly. That "Image" comes from the media coverage, not the information that's being covered.

That's because people are dumb and don't know how to read.

And why would that change this year? A conference would be better for everyone, even gamers. Can't wait to compare TP 2004 reactions with stoic Iwata showing random Zelda clips in front of a white wall...

It's dumb because its wrong. USA Today/CNet/CNN/etc all covered Nintendo just as much as they have in previous years, but were overshadowed because MS and Sony had new consoles to show.

People humor your argument if it had a shred of truth to it. Hell if it was the other way around we'd be reading lovely posts about "persecution complex" or some inane bullshit like that.

Look at IGN's headline for the video:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/04/29/nintendo-reveals-its-e3-plans?abthid=535fc85d9cdad9cb2900001a

Nintendo Reveals its E3 Plans Don't Include Live Conference

People are mistaken if they think there isn't a negative perception about not having a live-audience show whether there should be or not is another point entirely.

Ugh, those damn IGN's click-bait title articles... I'm not even going to bother on click it, I'm 100% the comments section will be on fire with everyone yelling at Nintendo for not doing a Press Conference again.

Good points. By then, perhaps Sakurai will have included Battlefield and friends in For Glory mode? Would be really awesome.
