Play Nintendo - Announcing Nintendo @ E3 2014

Nintendo of America opted to do a live press conference instead of a Nintendo Direct for the Wii U launch detail line up in September 2012. I find it weird that in 2013 and 2014, they are opting out of a press conference at the biggest event of their industry.

Given Nintendo's unique situation and place in the industry, they have calculated that the return from presenting a pre-E3 conference is inferior to the logistics and costs of having a live, flashy, expensive press conference.

Trust me, if Nintendo thought there was a significant opportunity cost that was forgone from abstaining from hosting pre-E3 conferences, they would continue to do so.

I highly doubt that Iwata made this decision on a misguided whim without taking calculated economic costs into factor. Of course, just because it's not a significant opportunity cost that's lost for Nintendo, doesn't mean that it's not best for Microsoft / Sony to host one.

Nintendo Direct @ E32013 definitely did not have any of that. :)

I don't recall it having any of that, unless you think Iwata is a terrible presenter. From what I remember, they showed their games, announced what they were going to announce, and that was it.

Today's news is the beginning of the end for WiiU imo. If they had a new big budget Metroid and other new games they would have had a proper press conference to build the hype.

I think we are going to see the new Zelda, some new Smash characters with a solid release date, a new Bayo 2 trailer with a release date and a re reveal of X with it's proper name and a release date and well... that is all.

This news is the biggest indication yet that they have given up on the system ever being a success.

You would think that with some of the bullshit that the other two systems are pulling that at least some in the press would be running with the underdog status of the Wii U and some of the perks it has.

- No subscriptions that hold online hostage
- Backwards compatibility
- A growing library of great exclusives
- Nintendo games in HD
- It's cheaper

But I suppose all that really matters is that they are electing to stand to the side in order to focus on showcasing their strength, instead of being drowned out by the hype of the other two and all of the third party support that only those systems will enjoy. How dare they not stand on the stage next to that?

Problem is there's an equally long, or longer, list of major problems. The world isn't rejecting the Wii U because of the media. That blame falls squarely on Nintendo.

What the hell? Todays news is that they're going to have new announcements and massive live coverage at E3. What?

You really should listen to me a bit more on this.
I mean, granted, it's just my opinion... but of course gaming press is going to be negative about it, because they are being cut out of the conversation. When you start promoting and talking through 'owned channels,' then you get the traffic. You're basically taking traffic away from press outlets, and letting consumers participate without their lens.

In a perfect world, Sony and MS would see the value in this approach and pull away from the gaming press too. The gaming press industry could do with a severe slimming down.

He's right though. Nintendo wasn't at E3. They really disappointed everyone.

i remember there were floorplans for a nintendo booth at e3, but as soon as i entered the area where it was supposed to be i fell into a hole in spacetime and only wound up here and now to tell you all about it.

Nintendo just shot themselves in the foot.

So wait, let me get this right:

A new Zelda and new games means they are giving up but a new Metroid and new games would mean they weren't???

They are still renting the Nokia Theatre, and that will still have a stage setup for their tournament. They even had a stage setup last year with speakers on it.

I highly doubt having a camera to live stream that hypothetical event and add a few flashy gimmicks here and there is going to take up considerable economic resources.

They are simply doing this because, they are Nintendo and they can "do anything they want". Except, of course, return positive yields to their investors.

Nintendo's booth space is bigger this year. They have 4822 (main booth), OFMR 5244 (main meeting room on show floor, next to 4822) and OFMR 5644 (secondary meeting room, no idea where it is since floor plans aren't publicly available yet.

Seriously?

Hype.

This really is a repeat of the mass bullshit that we got last year.

The press is all about story and dramatization, not a true representation of facts. Having Nintendo cast as the irrelevant and stupid little cousin must get them views unfortunately. People LOVE confirmation bias.

e.g. "Nintendo is so irrelevant and stupid. See even Forbes thinks so, I must be right."

and so on ad inifinitum ...

I don't care if they have a live event or stream. They're sill going to be presenting on the show floor and releasing trailers, which means a lot more than a silly presentation.

I'm interested in finding out which players are going to be participating in the Smash tournament.

Strange... this video looks more lively and enthusiastic than anything I have seen them do since it was released. The system is just now hitting it's stride and has yet to see it's biggest games. I sincerely doubt that they are going to try and generate hype like this, only to curl up and call it quits after getting everyone to take notice.

Are people really disappointed by Nintendo not having a live press conference? It's been years since the actual conferences were entertaining. Now they're just bloated with bad demos, celebrity guests and a bunch of other nonsense that just get in the way of interesting video game announcements.

This video ending with Reggiebot breaking down is actually more amusing to me seeing as how Nintendo shipped me a dud refurb last week.

Hopefully I'll have a working WiiU before E3

Digital streaming didn't produce hype? Apparently all those comments I read in streams (especially in nico), threads in other sites (even GAF), and even imageboards don't exist.

Did you just read the headlines from a journalism site and that's all your basing your entire views off? Did you even watch the announcement? Seriously?

Just look at the username. Hell you can notice a trend with certain users and their reactions. lol

Sales numbers, marketing buzzwords and staged demos could single handedly turn around Nintendo's financial situation.

As for the Digital Event, I really hope they fix the streaming. Last year's Direct was nigh unwatchable.
They're streaming on Twitch as an alternative now so it should hold up.
Really, they should just make Twitch their main platform. It's exceedingly better than uStream and they would gain more viewership

My eyes are rolling so hard they're about to fall right out my face. OK so they showed Mario Kart 8, 3D World, Smash for 3DS and Wii U and DKCTF for the first time exclusively at E3 last year. They showed Bayonetta 2, X and Wind Waker HD and more BUT I guess that amounts to nothing. No...last E3 what they showed was enough for a whole damn conference and then some. That's a better showing content wise than the other two in terms of bringing the software. Doing a 'Direct' is not indicative of neither the quality or quantity especially if you've seen the things they've announced through these directs on a random day.

The press hasn't been kind to them for awhile, so this let's the main messaging get out to potential purchases through Nintendo's rose-tinted view. The sad part is, it works, but it mostly has to happen because of the vitriol the media is giving them in the first place. It's a cycle, just look at all the negativity today in what should be a big win for 'core fans,' since they are actively being called to take part in experiencing something that was typically reserved for elite access press.
Or maybe it's the fact that even regular press such as Forbes knows this is a bad idea. Nintendo isn't in the position to opt-out on another conference. I've said this before, but conferences generate hype. Nintendo needs as much attention and "hype" from conferences/press/more in order to stay in relevancy.

Nintendo is releasing big-sellers this year and needs as much consumer attention as possible for them to sell well. IMO, Smash Bros. and MK won't even be highly known as their predecessors were, especially when we're looking at a time where the target market consists mainly of those who have yet to even attain a console, (assuming you believe Smash Bros and Mario Kart appeal to the "blue ocean" like most people do.) Nintendo needs to be working double-time on marketing the console and games now as consumers don't even know that any of these products are coming out yet. Online conferences will not do anything for Nintendo.

I would like to throw out marketing terms like "prescence" and "awareness" and state that games won't sell their full potential,
W101
, without advertising like this, though I know most people will go and call bullocks on it as it is "ignoring the power of these franchises" but I just don't think so.

I've been a fan for Nintendo ever since my first console/handheld, and I don't have the "rose-tinted glasses" to see that Nintendo is going into irrelevancy in ways that other companies would have already went under by now. I simply don't think the press is thinking "oh I'm not a part of this so I hate Nintendo" as they can/definitely will simply report what is online, however I think they see the situation as I do, Nintendo needs to shape-up if they want to perform at their fullest potential.

Edit: People on here are delusional. Press conferences and first impressions mean everything. Microsoft's policies and showings on stage of the initial Xbox One has had lingering effects to this day. There are people that honestly believe that the X1 is mainly about TV and TV-Games, save for a few franchises like CoD and Halo.

Nintendo continues to know how to market Smash Bros., and only Smash Bros. Not having a live conference is a pretty big misstep. It was last year, it almost definitely will be this year.
On the other hand, a Smash Bros. tourney is a great way to show the new one is competitive, and a demo is very fan pleasing.

What, the controller and being underpowered? No third party support? It is still plenty powerful enough to make great games on and the controller is not some broken piece of tech. I mean, it still functions like a regular controller. It just has a touch screen as well. As for games, the line up of exclusives is growing pretty nicely.

But whatever. All I know is that I see far more positives that work in it's favor than any negatives and I'll be buying one for sure.
