Play Nintendo - Announcing Nintendo @ E3 2014

I wish people would stop worrying so much about ~~publicity~~ and realize there's going to be a brand fuckin' new HD Zelda shown. That in itself is going to guarantee this doesn't get ignored.

Zelda isn't as big as mario, kart, pokemon, or Smash. This is nice, but let's not pretend like it's going to do something aside from getting the crowd hyped...but since there won't be a crowd.

It's truly amazing how you can't criticize Nintendo on NeoGAF without 30 people jumping on you saying you are dumb.

I grew up with and love Nintendo. I'm going to call them out when they do something stupid.

MAINSTREAM media counts. Of course all of the gaming websites are going to cover what Nintendo is doing. What Nintendo needs is the regular news media of the world to cover them.

Having a small booth and an online stream that only Nintendo fans are going to care about isn't helping them any. They need a big presence and a statement where the mainstream news takes notice and talks about them in a positive light, not a footnote.

What? I criticize Nintendo all of the time. Many people here do...with minimal backlash.

You just need to be intelligent in how you reason your arguments. In this case, the realistic downsides to Nintendo hosting everything 100% digital is certainly a topic for debate given that tons of people will tune in, and the press will cover Nintendo's endeavours just like the rest of E3.

Last year, the "Nintendo isn't going to E3" misconception was mostly due to how Nintendo handled the announcement.

This time, Nintendo is extremely explicit in underlying their plans to attend the conference, so the negative backlash from last year may not be all that applicable.

It didn't get ignored last year. Ustream shit the bed when 1.5 million people were attempting to watch the US stream all at once.

The Press doesn't care about Nintendo in all honesty and Nintendo is tired of caring about them as far as spending millions to put on a song and dance for them.

Nintendo flew tons of Press up to see the Wii U a week before it was shown at E3. Those same people at E3 started the whole derp is it a new console or addon schtick.

You would think the Press would be happy they don't have to sit and listen to PR speak for 2 hours and instead get to jump right into the games. I mean afterall that is why they are there to play games and give gamers an idea of what they played.

Don't be so damn sensible, man.

Don't wanna be a party pooper, but has Nintendo ever confirmed when they were going to show their next Zelda? People have in the past assumed, and it's got out of hand, sorta like with the long road to Skyward Sword.

Aside from the fact that they could have talked about it at last E3 and shown some visual in any of the previous Directs, Aonuma said they'll talk about it more at E3 2014

Here's what I don't get.

Why is Nintendo not hosting a live conference, when they're hosting the Smash tournament in the exact same stage they would the conference?

I don't get the logic, why does the tournament take priority over the conference?

Who cares about the actual content? I watch for the canned applause and padding in between reveals.

Aonuma said there would be more information about Zelda at E3 and the logical assumption is that it will be shown in some form because it's been years in the making and Miyamoto said they were close to showing it at LAST E3.

When Nintendo has said in the past "We'll talk more about XYZ at E3 2014," the precedent is that Nintendo shows off some kind of trailer for the game.

Combine that with the fact that Nintendo is trying to minimize the lag between announcement and release, and we may get a good bit of information about the new Zelda title.

This approach is just as weird as it is modern. For how many years have we been talking about how irrelevant big shows like E3 and gamescom have become? Nintendo is moving away from the outdated "sender (Nintendo) - intermediary (press) - receiver (us)" model for quite some time (so is the whole media industry) with Nintendo Direct, not holding an E3 press conference is the next step within that logic. Iwata has been quoted that Nintendo does not care about "winning" E3 (anymore). So instead of (at least how Nintendo sees it - for now) burning money on a press conference they'll just stream their information over the internet. That sure is not as impressive as a press conference with live audience. But they will get something trending on twitter and tech press will cover it. Maybe the mainstream press will not cover it or not to the extent they'll cover Sony and Microsoft, but I guess Nintendo believes that even those outlets will have to change their way of covering events, maybe Nintendo believe they can educate that "mainstream gamer" themselves at a later date, when the products hit the shelves and it really matters.
In addition to that they're transforming E3 with their Smash Bros. Tournament and continued In-store promotion to a more community specific event, following through the new Nintendo Direct mentality. Same thing goes with their daily live streams. That could be huge. I remember from my print magazine days that getting access to Nintendo developers was near right impossible, I hope we'll see some new faces on those streams. (I love Iwata Asks for that specific reason.)

However, yeah, E3 press conferences (DONE RIGHT!) are really special and magical.

During E3, at Nokia Theatre, Nintendo will host the very first Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS tournament. 16 high-skilled players will compete, and fans can go to watch it in LA. It'll be broadcast live too.

So Press Conference?! :O

Yeah, I'd be shocked if it was playable but the odds of a trailer are very high.

Matter of logistics, really. A tournament has far less that can go wrong with it than a presentation that has to cover several different titles, especially with live demonstrations. We saw that in action last year with the ridiculous delays for the BF4 demo at MS's presser and the insane stuttering on the AC4 demo at Sony's presser.

What wasn't successful? What should they have learned? What difference does it make to you personally that it would upset you?

Can you elaborate?

Sure, no problem.

The Nintendo Direct last year for the the E3 press conference only received 1.6 million views on Youtube. This is a paltry number compared to the amount of exposure and viewership they would have received from third party networks in the past.

What this means for Nintendo:

1. No coverage on national television on networks like Spike TV because of the lack of lives press conference.

2. Headlines relegated to small news stories on major sites like IGN, Gamespot, Gametrailers etc, instead of the hundreds of thousands of viewers who watching the live streams daily.

3. And finally, a lack of excitement/energy and buzz of the crowd reaction, or "being the talk of the show".

It's pretty disappointing to be honest.

They're building hype for an upcoming game. I don't see how hosting a tournament means that it's taking priority over the conference.

Because they feel that dedicating a live event entirely for fans is more important than having a live event primarily aimed at press and industry.

I'm hyped for this. I hope they stream as much as possible from their E3 presence. All I heard in the video was "new games" and Nintendo already hyping their E3 6 weeks before it means they have great things to show. It must be worthy. I'm so looking forward for this.

That´s the point. Nobody knows they won´t be doing exactly that. Nintendo digital could be a more elaborate direct with actual good cinematography and cut ins from the audience in the theatre. We don´t know.

Wasn't there a comment about Zelda being 'almost ready' to show last year? Maybe I just picked that up from forum gossip, I dunno.

On YouTube. Do we have metrics about the amount of people who watched it from the Nintendo site / Ustream, or Nico Nico?

When your desperately trying to gain traction with the mass market and not just the nintendo fans with Zelda tattoos how in the world does a subdued conference make sense.

I'm totally fine with these plans, but after seeing how IGN decided to cover it I can't say I'm looking forward to a repeat of last year's "Nintendo are skipping E3" rubbish.

What is important is a good press release, especially in great network. Since one year Nintendo only communicates to its fans. That's a problem because the wide public does not care about Nintendo Direct and stuff like that. The lack of big events with huge games is a problem. From launch date till now we only see games with poor HD environnemnts. Where are Metroid Prime, big Zelda as OOT, big Mario 3D Game, big F-Zero, big Star Fox? Nintendo only launches interesting and funny gameplays like Nintendoland, Pikmin 3, SM3DW & DKTF. But if they want to competitor this is not enough. It deals with you because you are fanatics (as me).

As the wii U has a creepy CPU it is very hard for third party games to be good looking. The wii U failure come from bad choices. The gamepad stuff is a feature for true gamers only, not for casual gamers.

What is necessary now is to show bigs games, AAA games, as a massive open world. X could make the difference but when will it be released? Nobody knows.
MK8 seems to be very attractive even for a large public. What games will be launched immediatly after? Smash U will certainly be released in the early 2015.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.

I think the format will be important. If it's literally the same as last year- just another Direct with Iwata in front of a white screen, I think that yes it will not come across well. If the format is engaging and the software shown off is impressive, I think that's a different story.
