Why are so many gloomy about Metroid? Just because we haven't seen a game in a while doesn't mean the series is dead. Look at Punch-Out!

I agree it's a matter of time. I'm hoping for a 3rd person 3D Action Adventure Metroid set after Fusion, and I'm probably the only one.

Metroid didn't have a Nintendo 64 game, but that certainly didn't make the series dead; the games that followed that particular hiatus were among the best, if not the best, in the series.

They aren't going to make a high budget Metroid game for Wii U after the bomb that was Other M. Not enough time has passed for them to take a chance on a new Metroid, especially not on a struggling home console like the Wii U. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if there were no more high budget Wii U games announced from this point forward. It just doesn't make any sense.

3DS is our best bet for a new Metroid game. Think NSMB or LBW, but for Metroid.

You know, you guys have given me hope. We know Metroid is not dead, neither is any other Nintendo franchise. We might still get a new Mach Rider, we could get Star Tropics 3.

No, I'm not trying to be little miss sarcastic smartass, I am being serious; there is hope.

A 15 year wait between entries sounds pretty gloomy to me.

I agree. People are acting like it's dead. It hasn't even been that long since the last game.

Well the previous game was a massive bomb on all fronts, and the series has been in sales decline since Prime/Fusion. That doesn't sound optimistic for the future, particularly with Sakamoto indicating that he will not be returning to the franchise anytime soon.

Isn't nintendo's financial results and investors meeting this week? If so we might get some more info for their E3 plans.

it's even weirder to consider that we are as far removed from twilight princess now as twilight princess was from ocarina of time when it released.

Pokemon's release dates get me harder than Zelda's. We're now farther from the firered/leafgreen remakes than the remakes were from the originals.

Makes sense...problem is, Nintendo never makes sense

Watch Pokemon Tekken, or whatever that Lucario thing is supposed to be that everyone is saying is Pokken, turn into Urban Champion X Tekken.
Honestly.. deep down I feel that pokemon game was a new pokemon stadium of some sort.. Or some other kind of pokemon other than pokken (fighting game)

Yeah I think it is. I know that the Financial results is on the 7th, and then the Investors one will come some time after. Great. I almost forgot about it. We learnt about the E3 Nintendo Direct during last years one, yeah? I wonder what kind of goodies will come from this one.

metroid still gets tons of promotions, its not like they forgot about the series or anything, it still gets alot of shoutouts by nintendo themselves for it, you people are making it worse than it is.

I'm honestly very surprised to see how many people think it's a fighting game. It's pretty clear to me that it's a new Stadium/Battle Revolution type of game.

Metroid isn't dead. We just don't know of any new games in development right now. People who build an argument for why Metroid is "dead" need to look closer at Nintendo's history of IP management.

5. Case: announced stuff+ Zelda U+ 3D Metroid + new IP² + F-Zero + Starfox+ big surprise = MINDBLOW Nintendo destroyed everything!

Best case scenario, just replace WiiU Metroid with 3DS sidescrolling Metroid that makes great use of the 3D for depth: moving diorama.

According to GF that wasn't an actual game.

Yet they trademarked Pokken Fighters. I believe it's an actual thing in development at Namco. That fits with Nintendo's current strategy of cooperating with other companies to create games for their well know IPs (Metroid and Team Ninja, Zelda and Tecmo Koei, Smash and Namco). I think Iwata himself aknowledged this modus operandi in the investors' metting (or was it financial?).

If Pokken Fighters even ends up being something it will probably have nothing to do with the thing he was talking about. That honestly didn't even look like a fighting game and the explanation they gave made sense.

Do you mean this: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=83685285&postcount=1

Because to me it seems dodgy as hell, if anything it reinforces my beliefs.

Also to you this doesn't look like a fighting game?

It looks like a normal Pokemon game and according to GF its just a look at what Pokemon could look like in the future(which makes snese given that it was shown at the end of a timeline video). People just assumed that it was related to the Pokken Fighters trademark because of how close we saw the two and how it looks it looks like a console game graphically.

To me it looks like how a mainline pokemon game could look on future hardware. I can totally buy it as just a concept video or a future Wii U game. But the camera angle is definitely the typical pokemon battle angle. In fact that kind of 3/4th camera angle isn't even good for fighting games.

It's not in a stadium though, it takes place in the streets and they chose two humanoid pokémon to show, nothing cute or weird.

I suppose that wouldn't be the way the camera is placed in the game, in fact you can see it is circling around them in the gif, probably to show the models and stage from multiple POVs.

Besides versus fighters are something Nintendo always lacked, having a Pokémon versus fighter would do wonders for WiiU and Nintendo in general.

Well it dont have to be exactly a stadium

You seem to be mistaken here. X isn't "MHey" because I say it isn't, it isn't because it isn't. That's obvious to anyone who's played Xenoblade and/or MH for even five minutes and isn't caught up on flimsy and superficial similarities.

Oh no, I was going to write an explanation on the things that felt similar to me from the trailers, but I can already feel history rewriting itself to account for me not having played either MH3 Wii or xenoblade for "5 minutes".

Either I get lucky and when history is repaired, I'll have invented a machine capable of creating a time dilation field and be rich, or forgotten everything about both, as I've not played them for even an hour, apparently.

Damn.

Other M flopped because it was a horrible game. Though Metroid Prime bombed too iirc and the WiiU's install base is really low, Nintendo has done crazier things like Sin and Punishment lol.

In fact I think this could be the perfect opportunity to reveal a new shiny Metroid game.

Would be really GREAT if the 2011 Japanese Garden tech demo turned out to be a title in development!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Shch7LNkVXw

There is a slight air of mysteriousness to it as when questioned who made it Reggie wasn't allowed to say, but was kinda grinning the whole time. At the 6 main mark. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7jk-O-RETk#t=357

We know from the sonic boom reveal that even after a while - what looks like a tech demo can be a title that no one was expecting (and is well known!) It was shown at GDC 2013 as a cryengine tech demo.

metroid was never super popular. the top-selling game in the franchise is either the first metroid or metroid prime at 3 million units. everything else comes in between 1-2m units or slightly less.

i feel that the expectation for metroid on console would be to have it be sakamoto taking cues from uncharted again with its dumb cutscenes and unlikeable characters, and that a handheld version of the game would allow for a smaller game, similar to how a link between worlds was fine being a classic 2d zelda.

I want them to stop pretending Wii U isn't a stupid name that has severe impact on its sales and actually do something about it.

Are they back to doig on stage demo this year? Or will it be just a direct like last time?

why? the wii brand is dead so why put energy into turning it around? nintendo had their chance not to fuck things up and we are now about 3 years removed from that time.

it's not a direct but a 'digital event' at 9am pdt. the difference between that and a direct? who knows. they're also running/streaming interviews about demos all day every day at their booth.

Pokken Fighters, and Pokken Tournament got trademarked, not long after this clip was revealed. Ken means fist in Japanese. You can see a fist in a logo in the background. Both pokemon are in fighting stances, with clenched fists. The backgrounds look like something that suits a fighting game, not any stadium game ive seen before. You can see a short barrier, preventing the pokemon from leaving the area. As in, that'd make more sense for a fighting game, then a stadium game, where you can't move the pokemon on your own.

The camera angel is irrelavent. If they were to have the typical fighter camera view, it'd reveal that it is a fighter. I'm sure they didn't want to give things completely away.

Iwata has spoke about doing collaborations with 3rd party developers. Namco has been close with Nintendo and developing games.

I'd actually be surprised if this wasnt a fighter, and the trademarks that were filed never came to be anything.

I mean renaming the console to something else (with or without the word Wii in it), repackage it with a different look and kick off a new marketing campaign. It will definitely add more confusion to certain degree but considering how the mainstream still sees Wii U as a peripheral it's a risk worth considering.

Good post, The "fist" thing brings credibility about link of these trademarks and this short video.

I was about to edit, but...

That logo in the background with the fist, also has a crown on top of the fist, as well as a pokeball underneath it.

So Pok(pokeball/pokemon)ken(fist) Tournament(crown) sounds like it fits that logo well.
