Nintendo Launching NFC (figurine) Game for Wii U/3DS, Details @ E3

At the same time, there are not only going to be decorative boxes for video game hardware and packages for software, but also Nintendo character figurines displayed on store shelves. This will provide exposure for Nintendo, play a great role in raising our brand awareness and create more opportunities for consumers to play video games.

frankly i'm not sure if retail will be thrilled about ANOTHER set of plastic toys next to the video games

If these NFC figures help bring more exposure to Nintendo and their characters, I'm all for it. It sounds like it's being used as a platform for many games, not just one specific title, which is cool. Maybe all future Wii U and 3DS first-party games will feature NFC functionality and if you own certain figures, you unlock some content, but the games themselves aren't focused on the figures. How cool would it be if whenever a big Nintendo title is released, some figures are released alongside it? Zelda Wii U with Link, Zelda and Ganon figures released on launch day. I could see myself getting pretty addicted to these things.

The thought of Samus, Fox, Captain Falcon, Ness, etc. figures in my house gets me pretty excited.

Do they still sell?

Honest question. I have no idea where skylanders and friends are in the cold, godless cycle of being Tony Hawk'd to death.

Skylanders sells quite well on its own. Disney Infinity is a little trickier, since there's specific figures that sell really well (the Frozen characters, Sorcerer's Apprentice Mickey), but a lot of it languishes until its on sale.

So if Nintendo is careful with who they release, it could do alright. Cool.

*Cue metal mario and gold peach figures*

I'm thinking the next 3DS revision will have NFC built in to utilize these figures and have a minor spec bump for the purposes of improving the interface speed and/or multitasking with miiverse.

Performance on the latter is pretty awful on the current model. It's difficult to use when the load time is so damn long and cuts into the limited time I have to play.

Literally, just today, I was thinking: Nintendo is probably the only company that could get me to buy little figures to use in video games.

You magnificent bastards.

No kidding. I have held off this kind of stuff for so long but Nintendo is going to be the tipping point for me if done right.

I think it'd be cool if the figurines unlocked costumes in Smash Bros. All about finding the right reward balance.

you speak so well
I'm definitely interested in some figures, but only if there's an interesting game attached to it.

This is potentially one of the smartest things Nintendo has done in ages. A figurine Pokemon or Smash with some ultra rare collectibles, for example, could be a license to print money.

I just saw a huge stack of Skylanders Wii U junk in the clearance bin at my local Walmart today.

Generic characters that lost their appeal. Nintendo characters have withstood the test of time, and are still popular, after 25+ years.

How is that cool? Seriously, please explain it.

It's content that they created, and then if you want it, you buy a doll. In no way is that doll necessary.

You could say, "Well, it means they're creating a 7th alternate costume instead of just 6." But in that case, it'd just be cool if they included 7 costumes in the game. Again, no need for the doll. And that's the most benign example, since costumes don't affect gameplay.

I've read a lot of the posts in this thread, read the announcement on a separate website, and I still don't understand exactly what this is. Keep in mind, I also have no clue what kind of games the Skylander or Disney games are.

Right, and its not like we have two behemoths (or soon to be perhaps in the case of Disney Infinity) already on the market with tons of figures across multiple game platforms. I'm not sure if Nintendo will even be able to compete in this market between retail space and consumer interest given that one of the two platforms this is designed for can't even move games let alone toys.

It's a set of games that you can use a Nintendo figurine in to store and transfer data.
We don't know what the games will be like yet.

Did they confirm an actual NFC centric game/new IP ala Skylanders? Their report only states that NFP stuff will be compatible with current and future titles like an extra feature or something.

Animal Crossing U with NFP up the wazzou

all 300+ Animals represented.

Nintendo can distroy many wallets, but like pokemon rumble proved maybe they are too lazy to see how this could work.

issues I had tow pokemon rumble toys they sold out day one, were too tiny so I did not bother to go and try to even get one of them even though I own the game

I get why they're doing it, but I can't muster up a whole lot of excitement for more toy/DLC things on the market.

Really curious what type of game they go with. I don't think this'll work if it just ends up being exactly like Skylanders or Disney Infinity. They're gonna have to do something new.

Thanks man! that was useful but i've got another question, hope you dont mind

What kind of gameplay is it(i mean skylanders cause its the closest we can releate this nintendo nfc game so far), is it adventure? brawler? story driven?

and how much content does the digital stuff has?
Skylanders is...I guess platform and brawler is probably the best way to describe it. Adventure too mostly. There's a beginning and end goal for each level, with certain requirements to "complete" a level; do this, don't die, find all of X collectable etc. Swap Force refined the levels and added 2 extra modes; Time Attack (finish in a certain amount of time) and Points (rack up points for attacking, etc).

The game as a story that spans across each level; some of the games have you doing something to stop an enemy, get a piece of a Macguffin, etc. With the last 2 games, they added in boss battles too.

The figures add a character and the more of an element you have, the stronger Skylanders of that element become (ie stat boosts; speed, health, etc). Adventure and Battle Pack figures add a new level and battle arena respectively. Usually they also can be used as a weapon in the main game. For instance, there's a Catapault Battle Pack. It gives you a new arena and follows your Skylander around launching blasts at enemies. Another item, Dragon's Peak adds a new level, new arena (first 2 games) and rains fireballs from the sky for a short period. That is sold with a special character plus 2 magic items. These are mini figures that do something as well; in this case, the Winged Boots makes your figure faster and Sparx is...Sparx the Dragonfly from the Spyro series. He shoots little fireballs out.

A little late, honestly. You've already got two bigger competitors; one with far, far more name recognition, and one who's been at it far longer (long enough to be rejected by Nintendo once already, in fact).

I'm sure it will do OK, but Infinity and Skylanders are already far and away the leaders here.

animal crossing neighbors figures... geez

That would be amazing.

only buy the neighbors you wanted to keep in town the other would move away muhahaha

if you really like one Animal but they did not live in your town the figurine would cause them to move in, muhahahahaha

this shit is EVIL man evil :(

I want tiny, little NFC enabled Pikmin :3
They transport your data from Wii to Wii U and 3DS to 3DS anyways!

If We somehow get some NFCfigures being backwards compatible with released games....

Screw NES, SNES, N64 remix, etc.

We're getting WIIU and 3DS REMIX

The games are completely secondary to me: I just want to cover my desk with a mound of plastic
and ensure that I can stare into King Dedede's soulless eyes every night before I go to sleep.
Personally owning figurines of some of my all-time favourite characters is my DREAM, man! I really hope that The Big N is able to correctly gague the market and release these in just the right quantity - I want to be able to walk into a store and pick one up rather than being forced to trawl eBay, but sustaining interest amongst the non-hardcore fans is crucial to ensure that the Platform survives long enough to reach a second wave.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
I'm out. Collect-to-play games frustrate me as they're a transparent cashgrab. Maybe Nintendo will price it (or the figurines) accordingly and the game itself will be something special, but eh, I'm not interested. My interest in video games does not come from plastic trinkets and I find no entertainment in heading to a store to buy a tiny little Super Mario Guy.

Will be following to see how it pans out though. I don't necessarily believe a Nintendo NFC game has no place in the market, but I think they're starting on rough footing due to the Wii U's awful market penetration and rapidly decreasing shelf space. Not that they intended for it to be that way, of course. 3DS might be the saving grace there.

Both. If I read it correctly.

I don't doubt they could have one, but I'm not seeing where they state that there's going to be a reveal of a new NFP-based game at E3 like OP claims.

"At E3 to be held in L.A. this June, we will announce which titles are compatible with NFP, display NFP products and disclose more specific information about NFP, which will be launched during this year-end sales season."

Sounds like they're talking about already released games being compatible, and maybe future titles like smash bros.

I really hope a good game isn't attached to this, I really have no interest in collecting figures to play a game. I already buy everything digitally to avoid more physical clutter!

If skylanders and Disney can make bank with figurines for garbage games, I'm sure Nintendo can make some decent money also.
Skylanders are good (Swap-Force is darn great); Infinity is a mixed bag as a game, but the Toy Box to create stuff is really nice.

One can hope Nintendo makes something as great as Swap-Force at least.

That and the fact that they've stated multiple times that they want to start alowing the use of credit cards through NFC. So it could be talk about Rumble, some about Skylanders Trap Team and Disney Infinity 2.0, some mention of some internal projects and a late 2014 eShop update to allow credit cards that use it.

I know what you mean. The idea of having to design a game around these little trinkets seems a little obtrusive and limiting in scope from a development point of view etc but like you say I'm willing to see how it goes. I don't mind buying them for collecting purposes in any case but that's not everyone's cup of tea so having to spend extra on little bits of plastic to proceed in a game can be unappealing to most but with Skylanders and DI, the general audience seems to like them. I also think Nintendo will ponder long and hard about how to execute all of this in a way for it to not be obtrusive for the player. Who knows really. E3 is soo close :0

Would you still have this stance if the characters were Mass Effect action figures?
:D

I don't know how well a 3DS iteration of this will work if you need a separate dongle; either take lower margins bundling it in with figurines or hope an accessory sells. Will be awful if it needs to be plugged into a power outlet as well.

IMO they should scrap the idea of an NFC dongle on the 3DSand just use the cameras/AR codes on the figurines for the same purpose...

It won't need an outlet. The Skylanders one doesn't.

Now I dont think they would do this in a million year, but what if they included this into FE x SMT. AND further what if made a deal to market SMT figurines. Just throwing ideas out for them.

Yeah, the idea of a Nintendo NFC game makes a modicum of sense, but I have to wonder if they're kneecapping it by launching it exclusively for Wii U.

Skylanders and Disney Infinity include portals that use batteries and interact with the 3DS through IR.
