My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Season 4 |OT| Twilight Princess Returns

While I do agree the purple jesus route is.. lame.

On the other hand , it makes sense for the other princesses to not necessarily help.

One they might want to let the other horses handle it themselves.
dos, for them epically moon horse princess , it would be like shooting an ant with a shotgun.

It makes no sense, just read the comics to see the proper way to still keep the focus on Twilight and the others, but not marginalize and dumb down the other.

Kinda've a bad episode v_v

Not the worst this season though.

My only real disappointment is that this big, two season build up to the Equestria Games comes down to being the backdrop for a Spike episode. A great Spike episode, but there should have been two or three episodes about the games given the build up. But that would have gotten in the way of another two part finale. I'd love another, more mellow, finale like Best Night Ever.

That actually is pretty weird, now you mention it. I wonder if they'd originally planned something different; a two-part story where the games are crashed by a new villain might've been neat.

I'd be up for that. They could even shift the big two-parter back into the middle of the season if they still wanted one. No reason why it needs to be a finale.

My theory is that the Equestria Game was originally going to be the season 3 finale, with the two episodes before that building up to it. That got changed when Hasbro requested an alicorn princess finale so they pushed it to season 4 without rewriting the script.

That said, the spotlight stealer is this: Season Finale Teaser!

I know this thread runs on a free-fire spoiler policy, but... I'm marking this one.

THEY BLEW UP THE PONYVILLE LIBRARY?! Nice Death Star shot reference, though.

And is that... Tirek? G1 Tirek? Is he gonna get brutally murdered on camera by the Rainbow of Light again? And threaten to decapitate Spike for old times' sake?

Ugh, that doesn't make me feel any better about the finale. I agree with DrForester that Meghan is imo doing a terrible job with Twilight - she really is becoming Mary Sue.

Why do the Time Turner/Derpy shippers bother you so much? I know Rose was a companion on Doctor Who and there is a pony who is Rose, but the Doctor has had multiple companions throughout the series. Derpy and Rose can both be his companions... Sorry for the rant, but this obsession you have with Derpy and her fans (lol she isn't with Time Turner or lol Dinky isn't her child - see she is with Carrot Top) is unhealthy...

I'm not sure I buy the Mary Sue argument about Twilight. Sure, she's gotten powerful, and she got to be a princess, too, with all the perks and responsibilities that came with that. But that's not the entire story of her. She's visibly chafing at the princess thing for one.

Take this episode, for instance, she gets to sit in the royal lounge with the other princesses, but how does Twilight see it? She doesn't get to sit with her friends. She does what she has to... because Twilight is that kind of pony, but she'd much rather be down there freaking out over medal counts with Pinkie. But, duty calls, and Twilight, as always, responds. Whether she wants to or not.

I kind of hope that this becomes something, at some point. There's apparently one lesson in friendship that Twilight is still lacking... and that's saying no. To Princess Celestia, in particular. I mean, sure, Celestia's requests usually come down to Saving the World, or similar, but still... I do hope there's a big solid "No!" coming up at some point. If they're supposed to stop being Master/Student, somepony has to break that old bond so they can build a new one. And it will hurt. But... Twilight will have to do it at some point if she wants to become her own mare, princess and all. Unless she's happy being groomed into somepony she's not.

I've been waiting for this since the end of last season. It's time for Twilight to take that WWCD bracelet off and start deciding who she wants to be, not who Celestia says she should be.

That was a really nice episode. I think my favorite part was Spike singing and how out of that awkward silence you hear Pinkie yell "NAILED IT!"

Looking forward to the finale.

As for the Doctor/Derpy thing, I'm surprised it took so long for them to really acknowledge the whole Doctor Who references, I think they should've paired Doctor and Rose a long time ago, but I'll always have a soft spot for the Doctor/Derpy pairing. Not so much romantically, but with Derpy being a companion like the show.

It was kind of telling that in the S3 opening episodes, Twilight's worst nightmare was to disappoint Princess Celestia. I mean, compare to Spike's whose worst nightmare was getting abandoned by Twilight. Makes you think, doesn't it?

In all honesty, a conflict between Celestia and Twilight about who Twilight should be would be very brave of the show to do. But it would be very good for Twilight to finally step out of Celestia's shadow, think about this whole princess thing on her own, and deciding what she wants to do with herself now. I wonder if Celestia is keeping Twilight on a short leash to avoid another Nightmare Moon kind of scenario. Where a princess starts asking herself questions that lead to bad places. Of course, if this means keeping Twilight too busy to be with her friends, well, I see a backfire coming up...

The first issue of the current comic arc hints that conflict may be seen before it wraps up.

Conflict in the comics or the show?

I've been waiting for something other than blind loyalty from Twilight since the Canterlot Wedding when Celestia couldn't be bothered to ask Twilight what her problem was with Cadance at the time...

In the comics. The first issue had Twilight confide to the others that she expected to go down a path more like Starswirl the Bearded than Princess Celestia.

These are both terrific posts.

The Twilight/Celestia conflict angle is an interesting one, especially in light of how both the characters have been characterised up to now. Celestia has always been the sensitive, conscientious mentor, so imagining a scenario where she pushes Twilight against her wishes (especially without a really good reason) is difficult to picture.

Likewise, Twilight sees Celestia as both a beloved teacher and an almost infallible leader, so I'd almost expect her to follow Celestia to the ends of the earth without question if she were asked to.

I guess the upshot of all that is that it'd have to be something pretty remarkable between the two of them before either one would refuse to budge.

The only thing I can see that would cause not just a conflict, but a rift between the two would be if Celestia demanded Twilight abandon her friends from any reason. But I doubt Celestia would do that. Both because she'd never do that to Twilight, and in the interest of national security, those six ponies must be kept friends.

It would probably be over time, Celestia easing Twilight into the princess thing, giving her more and more duties until Twilight begins to miss her friends due to being on duty so much. Also there's still that little detail that Celestia used magic to alter Twilight's body without giving Twilight the opportunity to refuse. I mean, she'd have said yes, no doubt there, but... what Celestia did when she turned Twilight into an Alicorn wasn't done with explicit consent from Twilight, now, was it? If the princess thing gets too hard on Twilight, there's only one pony to blame, and the outburst will be in the form of an "I never asked for this!" rant. And she'd be right, Alicorn Twilight was Celestia's idea.

The more I think about it, the more I kind of want something like this to happen. Twilight is outgrowing her mentor. Other than practical stuff in ruling a nation and such, what is there left for Celestia to teach? And, well, seeing Twilight getting lessons in politics would be rather boring for a cartoon...

That could definitely be an interesting scenario. Having Twilight torn between loyalty to Celestia and the realm and her own wants and needs as an individual would certainly make for some compelling MLP.

I'd never thought about the whole ascension-to-Princess thing like that either. Twilight went from being a promising student of magic to a high-ranking public official so quickly and with so little warning that it's amazing she handled it as well as she did. I could definitely understand if there was some resentment towards Celestia for taking the wheel on her life on that.

Good Spike episode, not how I expected the Equestrian Games to be shown off. Throughout the ep, I couldnt help but think the real reason the crystal ponies are praising Spike is cause they're afraid of him, especially considering dragons eat diamonds and the sort. Also neat to see the AJ Spike lighter animation again.

Oh and Spike being dang cool

Strange how his fire was orange instead of the usual green. Guess the animators forgot to switch it to green or something.

Oh boy, things are heating up now. TV Guide has a clip from the finale, complete with a song from a character
who hasn't sung on the show before. Equestria Daily has an image of Luna as the header for the story, but surely they wouldn't blow the surprise with something that obvious?
I'm making an effort to avoid spoilers, so I've not watched it.

Maybe orange is hotter? Wouldn't want to burn those scrolls rather than send them by using the wrong colour flame.

?

Clip gives me some hope that maybe the Princesses getting kidnapped in the previous clip was just the villain fantasizing. In which case, maybe they actually get to DO something and I happily eat crow for thinking Meghan's a hack.

I wonder,

I do. I'm just not a fan of Meghan's two parters. The same formula has gotten old. This clip gives me hope that maybe she's going to do something new with them finally.

Maybe I can express my frustrations better this way. Celestia has always had a role in the show similar to other mentor figures in literature. Gandalf, Dumbledore, Obi Won, etc. These characters while never the main characters (forgetting that nasty prequel business with Obi won) had their roles in the story. At no point did these characters have to be nerfed and/or marginalized to make the Hero looks good. I am of the belief that a lazy writer is one that has to marginalize other characters to make the hero look good. A good writer (again, look at the MLP comics) keeps the focus on the main character, but makes use of those other characters as characters. Not as tools. I don't expect Celestia to be a main character (a single episode in a 5 season show would be nice though), but since Meghan has taken over the only thing she does with Celestia is have her spout exposition (sometimes in lovey songs) or get defeated/kidnapped. Wouldn't be so bad if this didn't happen in every two parter she's done. She had Celestia and Luna get kidnapped in the S4 premiere. Doing it again in the S4 finale would be lazy.

Another example. Using the Harry Potter films. Because they were lazy and couldn't actually fit in pesky character development for Harry into the films, they decided to make Ron a joke character so Harry would look better.

Speaking of which, Meghan and Tara are doing a press conference in a few minutes.

Would like to know who's voicing the baddy.

I think I'm becoming a broken record, but I agree with what DrForester has said. I loved Meghan as writer during season 1 & 2, but I feel she just can't handle being in charge. What was the purpose of going on and on about the Equestrian Games during both Season 3 + 4 if the games themselves just ended up being a Spike episode (although it was a good one)? DrForester is right about the two parters under Meghan... Sombra could have been a great villain - he enslaved an entire race of ponies, but he ended up being smoke that growled in his 2 minutes of screen time... We kept hearing about Princess Twilight, but what really changed? They have an episode here and there where they reference it, but it seems to be largely ignored otherwise....

From what I've read of the comics up to Issue # 12 (SA + Cadance), they do a much better job of getting all characters involved. The show is Friendship is Magic, so why is it that only Twilight can do anything? They even got rid of the Elements of Harmony so what good is the rest of the group?

They can be cheerleaders.
They can be comedy relief.
They can partake in musical numbers.
They can collect rainbow doodads to power up Twilight's magic.
They can get kidnapped and brainwashed to attack Twilight (yay, plot devices).
They can capably be used as filler padding for all of the episodes between the premieres and finales where Mary Sue Twi saves the day.

Countless uses for the rest of the Mane 6. (Or should that be Supporting 5 plus Spike?)

I will say this for my expectations from the S4 finale. By the very nature of them almost certainly opening the box to defeat the new baddie, I do expect the other 5 to actually help out this time. At least, I hope we get more of a team effort like S1 pilot and S2 premiere.

If that isn't Nicole Oliver they've found a fantastic soundalike. Thought the song sounded pretty good overall, particularly that Tri-Princess chorus. Looking forward to hearing the rest on Sunday.

Last-minute twist is about to rectify the Mary Sue Twilight premise.
Power sacrifice imminent. Rainbow doodad box will save the day thanks to Discord's key.
Day will be saved by the Mane Six working in tandem wielding rainbow doodad powers.
(Unless the box just gives Twi a power. That would suck.)

That last fight ripped off Man of Steel.

Let the rainbow remind you... we have new Rainbow Pony toys to sell!

Episode 1 was pretty awesome. Great set up.

Episode 2 was pretty meh. The fight was really cool, but the logical hoops that were jumped through to get there were just stupid.

-Celestia and Luna don't think Tirek knows about Twilight. This comes right after saying Discord betrayed them, and saying that Tirek has been lose and gathering power since Season 2's "It's About Time"

-Princesses get captured, AGAIN.

-Discord really did betray everyone. it wasn't a long con. Fluttershy is now canonically a fucking idiot.

Yeah, that was pretty bad.
Hopefully next season gets better again.

I wouldn't call it bad, just not extraordinary.

And I'm not sure that 'Let's transfer all our powers to Twilight because Tirek doesn't know who you are.' ploy was the smartest idea.

So that means Cadence was around the time of Tirek?

I'm confused.

That's just her nature. Besides, they rectified that by making Discord a fucking idiot for trusting Tirek. So, if anything, their bond will be stronger now.

That whole bit made no sense. They are assuming that Tirek has been on the lose since Season 2. He would know about both of them. Meghan was so determined that only Twilight do anything that she just decided to have Cadance get captured along with the other two.
