Yoshi has been my "main" since the SNES. Very rarely will I switch to another character just to try something new. I guess that's why the roster being "bad" or "meh" was never a big deal to me because I can't imagine a MK game without Yoshi.

I really only used Yoshi for Mario Kart too

but then 3D World happened and now see Luigi as an awesome character. I'll probably be using him a lot too.

Usually Wario, though later games I used Rosalina and Funky Kong a whole lot. I see myself maining at least one of the Koopalings in MK8's roster.

Medium: Peach
Cruiser: Ludwig
Heavyweight: Rosalina
Metal: Pink Gold Peach
Super Heavyweight: Wario

But my main will be Rosalina

Edit: I misunderstood the question, those are the ones I plan to play as! But I usually gravitate towards those characters if they are available in the games. Rosalina and Shy Guy specially

the roster leaves me a bit cold, tbh. I hate the babies and only two out of seven Koopalings are cool in my book, still, Shy Guy is in so I'm not complaining much

I expect a hella lot better DLC/unlockable characters, tho

yea... it sank in once i watched the test chamber video. Hopefully we get free DLC characters (ill pay as well) but ill be mostly playing as babymario.

I really don't know what you would use the gamepad for with a game like this? Might have some interesting uses in battle mode but in the racing mode, I dunno. I'm not sure we can fault Nintendo

Yeah.
I mean, Nintendo definitely should have produced more gamepad exclusive games(Like gamepad centric equivalents to the "Wii Series" or something.) but they don't always need to use the damn thing in every one of their traditional franchises. Especially when it would serve no real purpose.

There aren't many compelling things to do with it outside of showing stats or making it a rear view mirror. I really don't want to look down while I'm racing. :/

Well, if you want to be less technical about it, Iggy and Ludwig share the same vehicle size class as Yoshi, just not the same weight stat. So it can still work out for you.
