Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

I disagree with most of those scores for the older Mario Karts. Hmm.

I still think MK8 will be a great game, but just sayin'...

I haven't played any handheld iterations, but I think 64 (it's one of my all time favorite games, but not because it was by any means perfect or without major flaws/limitations) and Wii are spot on. I would have put Double Dash slightly above Wii probably.

Well, Double Dash is one of my fav Mario Karts, and they gave it a 5, lol. I didn't care for MK Wii that much, though, so I'm fine with their score of that one. :P

It wasn't leaked. Some quotes:

9/10 like Mario Kart 7 and Advance. DS and 64DD 8/10. Mario Kart Wii got 6/10. Double Dash 5/10

That Double Dash score makes me wanna weep

Mario Kart Wii a 6 out of 10? eeeeeh

At least Advance gets the recognition it deserved for being a massive, difficult, rewarding and nuanced game. One of the best but nobody ever gives it the credit it deserves.

Mario Kart DS, though. 8/10? That game was something else, more than twice as much solid polished content as any Mario Kart game before it. Still isn't beat to this day in the content department except by Sonic Transformed

The more I read about this the longer the wait seems.

Now I have to decide whether or not to purchase the pro controller or just use the gamepad....

This is gonna sound crazy, but I think I may be leaning more towards using the CC pro over the Wii U pro controller. I have both, I just like the feeling of the CC pro for Mario Kart. Who with me?!
I might or might not get a U pro by the end of the month, so if I don't, I'll be CC-ing, not even pro, into MK8 full speed ; )

I believe that's right. The time in Paris is 6 hours ahead from EST. 9 hours ahead from PST.

So I guess we should expect reviews midnight (west coast time)

LOL. Edge do love to exaggerate. Both were perfectly fine games.

In isolation Double Dash is good, in comparison to other MK's, it really is pretty bad. As is the N64 one. Mainly because of the terrible handling in both games. Wii one is an 8 for me. Courses were too wide and there were way to many big items coming out, destroying the balance and making it completely randon who won, instead of only slightly random.

Delightfully early embargo for us europeans. I haven't even finished my first cup of coffee at work when this hits - lovely.

Yup. I'll be waking up to a good time here in FL. All will be said and all will be done.

I'll predict a meta score just cause

90% aggregate

My metascore will be 95% aggregate possibly highest we will see this year (Unless The Last of Us Remastered destroys it).

SM3DW came in at 93%.. And I think this game is even better than that. The only knocks ive seen on this game are Gamepad Integration, Battle Mode, and Character selection.. I personally dont think the Gamepad integration (splitscreen tv / pad) should even be an issue considering off screen support is included, but I know reviewers will knock on it. 2 of the 3 knocks are personal gripes IMO... Battle mode is the only real downer on this game.

Rating it on pure gameplay this game is a 9.5+ IMO.

Taking bets for negatives:

– No use of GamePad besides off-TV play / map display / motion controls; could have implemented 2P local multiplayer on TV+GamePad screens separated, 5-player mode or other features
– Shallow solo content; not even a Mission (MKDS) / Tournament (MKWii) mode to make up for it
– Antigravity is just cosmetic / “gameplay has not fundamentally changed” (I CAN SENSE THIS ONE ALREADY)
– Voice chat limited to lobbies; no free text chat input
– Too much luck-based (other words for “I suck at the game, but it must be its fault”)
– Character roster inflated by clones
– Feels too slow
– New items aren't new enough
– No battle arenas / still a time limit for battles / only balloon battles / battle mode sucks
– Framerate is stable 30fps with 3P/4P instead of 60fps which is totally unacceptable
– Only 720p / no anti-aliasing / no antianiscoptroniwhateverfiltering

Really don't see the importance of this one. One of the great things in local multiplayer is looking at the same screen, peeking where are the other players, laughing at others failures. If one of the two just looks at the gamepad, it's like playing online.

Oh man, I couldn't disagree more about the handling. It felt good in MK64, got somewhat downgraded in DD, then drastically downgraded again in Wii. Everything but the sport bikes handled like fucking dumptrucks.

I guess if you enjoy driving on ice I could see MK64 being your favorite.

So if those ARE listed negatives in the reviews, you will... feel justified? I don't get it. Most of those are real negatives, so it's assumed that at least some of them will pop up in some of the reviews.

I'm sure reviewers are going to bring up the limited use of the game pad. They do it for almost every WiiU release(Sometimes it's a valid critique, sometimes it isn't.). I think we'll also see how it's perceived ability to "Save the WiiU" effects it's score.
:P

I really don't know what you would use the gamepad for with a game like this? Might have some interesting uses in battle mode but in the racing mode, I dunno. I'm not sure we can fault Nintendo

maybe a rear mirror...i dunno, can't think of anything revolutionary.
my dream was a track editor you draw with your finger/stylus, maybe next MK...

I don't understand this comment. The vehicles turn a hell of a lot better in 64 than Wii (again sport bikes notwithstanding).

I don't understand this comment either. Sure if you exclude the best handling vehicles of each MK you could also say all Mario Karts handle like shit.

Mario Kart Wii has the best handling of the series thanks to the inclusion of the new inward-drifting bikes. Period.

So I played Mario Kart 7 to refresh my memory...
Good:
+ The game is graphically outstanding. It is easy to miss while racing, but I looked more closely and the game has great detail.
+ Cart customization is neat. I cannot wait to see bike customizations!
+ Retro tracks are fun.
+ Coins are a neat callback.
Bad:
- Glider and propeller feels forced. Many tracks are not designed with the abilities in mind.
- Original tracks are more miss than hit. Many are easily forgettable.
- Lack of cool down for Blue Shell. Got Lightning right after one.
Ugly:
? That roster, why?

Anyways Mario Kart 8 cannot come soon enough!

One of the most exciting things about Mario Kart 8 has been seeing them fix this. Every element seems to work in perfect harmony this time, in addition to the newer anti-grav stuff.

Going a bit off topic, would you guys recommend Mk SNES over 64? I'd like to play some of the old Mk games in the series as a pound of reference.

Agree with you there! Gliding is such a good idea and from previews it seems to be fixed. Here is hoping!

Are you being deliberately obtuse? I clearly said everything OTHER than the sport bikes handle like shit. Some of us want to be able to use more than a small percentage of the vehicles. My original comment made clear exactly what I was talking about. You just seem to want to start an argument for some unknown reason.

EDIT: Didn't realize it was not the same person breaking my balls both times. Anyway, my comment stands. While MK64 might be like driving on ice compared to MKWii sport bikes, what the hell then do you call MKWii's other vehicles? Driving on teflon with tires also made of teflon?

Super Circuit is better than those two :P

But if you have to chose between those games, I'd go with 64 since it does have more varied and better designed courses

While I don't really care one way or another what MK8 scores (since I'm pretty sure I'll love it), I'm not expecting super great scores. I'd say average will be 7.5-8.5 from all the major outlets (not including Nintendo-fan sites). There's a lot to love about MK8, but I won't be surprised if points are taken off for lack of gamepad features, lack of modes, poor roster, and a subpar battle mode.

Well I'm going with whatever is on virtual console. If Super Circuit is there I'll get that. I never got to play Mario Kart SNES (my mom got me a genesis), so now that I'm a grown ass man, I'd like to go back and play it.

I'm expecting mostly 9s and some 10s.
