[Polygon] Mario Kart 8 likely to be the worst-selling game in... what is that chart

wishes it were bannable to say mean things about Marvel
Doesnt the opposite of what pachter says always happen?

Im willing to think Mario Kart and Smash will help Wii U.

They will help the Wii-U move some systems for sure, but not enough to make much of a difference. There is a very good chance that Polygon is right here, and that's terribly sad. :(

I think the only piece of actual gaming press I go to is stuff on NovaCrystallis.com and RPGsite.net.

Stopped listening to every major gaming news site because of stupid articles like this. No need to have issues when I can find what I'm looking for with GAF + Twitter anyways.

True in UK and I think Japan? But Knack is bundled with every PS4 in Japan.
I believe Mario outsold Knack in USA though.

No idea about worldwide.

Nope, 3D World outsold it in Japan.

It's only true in the UK, but people believe it to be worldwide.

No shit. In other news, water is wet.

The install base is small. Everyone knows this. What else would you like to tell me?

They used ******** with supplementary sources lol.

Edit: I can't even mention the site they used here.

Their projection doesn't take into account how attach rates for Mario Kart dramatically increase for the consoles that underperform. And look at the attach rate for New Super Mario Bros. U, I doubt Mario Kart will do much worse when all is said and done. It is also unfair to compare a system that is on the market for 1.5 years with those with at least 5-6 years.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
"People are hyped for Mario Kart 8! What do we do?"
"Make an article about how it will be the worst selling game in the franchise! We'll be rolling in ad revenue!"

No shit this will be a low seller...

It literally cannot be anything but the lowest selling, unless Wii U triples in install base suddenly.
It looks like it could overtake sales of the GBA Mario Kart if they sold a copy to every single Wii U owner, but barely.

Edit: It looks like they cited ********, nevermind. Even a 100% attach rate still wouldn't likely do it.

So is this how we are doing "WiiU is the dommz!"-articles now, game journalists ?

The article has it all, Chartz numbers, Nintendo´s financial difficulties and self made graphs with chartz numbers.

*yawn*

Polygon examined the last 22 years of Mario Kart games sales. Based on our research, an average of 20.37 percent of those who purchase Nintendo hardware also purchase Mario Kart games. If Mario Kart's trend continues and Nintendo sells Mario Kart 8 to 20.37 percent of its existing 6.17 million user base, sales of the game would reach 1.26 million. If Nintendo's console predictions are correct, and assuming the average of 20.37 percent remains, Mario Kart 8 sales would reach 1.99 million units by the end of March 2015. Meaning this latest Mario Kart would sell a bit more than a third of the copies that the worst-selling Mario Kart, 2001's Mario Kart: Super Circuit for the Game Boy Advance, sold in its lifetime.

That is some shady ass math. Why are they mixing consoles with handhelds?

I like Polygon, enjoy watching their reviews, enjoy the besties. But, the Wii U doomsaying & constant articles about feminism (as much as I agree with most of them and the overall point they try to make) from Polygon are getting very, very old.

Anyone with common sense can see that the Wii U hasn’t been selling will, which by assumption will mean that this game will not sell too well. We don’t need click-bait articles every day about this stuff.

It certainly is Nintendo's fault with the console, but nothing they can do now can turn it around. Still getting the game! Don't matter, my Wii U needs games!

Not going to happen. Mario Kart is a system seller and will increase Wii U hardware sales by a 2 handful millions. Smash Bros will push it to 20+ million and Mario Kart software sales will increase as a result.

What the heck kind of pie graph is this supposed to be?

I think a realistic guess is that this will sell a few million Wii Us by the end of the system's life and end up selling about 7-8 million units, again, by the end of the system's life.

Here's what they're idiotically missing

Two months before Mario Kart 7 came out, there were only 6.68 million 3DSs sold. Yeah, it was likely higher than that by the time it came round, but it helped sales. Do they honestly believe things will just sit?

For reference, end of 2011, there were 15 million 3DS consoles sold. 9 million added in just 3 months thanks to Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.

That last comparison makes no sense. MK8 is only on WiiU, while Sonic ASRT is on a myriad of platforms. Plus it has been on sale time and time again (just recently it was £3 on Steam).

The former comparison though.... makes me wanna puke.

True, but MKWii sold over 35 million units which is significantly more than most multiform game releases.

*staring at text editor*

"Well, that can't be right. I've written two sentences and my article is done. Mario Kart 8 will sell the worst. But... the editor will probably think I'm lazy as shit if I don't have anything else. Do I... do I have any charts? Just... let me throw some numbers in the chart maker. Is this how charts work? I think so.

"Okay, I've got a whole page now. I think that's good."

Did it? I need to see a source because I've never heard this before

IIRC it was only in the UK.

That's a shame, it looks great. Really tempted to pick up a Wii U for it but I imagine the price of it will only go down between now and Christmas.

Assuming you are North America, the $200 refurbished unit from Nintendo is probably your best bet. If they do drop the price this year it probably won't be more than $50. I actually expect a price drop at E3 for the standard package. MK8 bundle will probably remain the same price, it is that bundle's existence that actually makes me think a price drop could happen considering what a ridiculous value it is - deluxe console, two games, Wii remote + wheel for $20 more than the standard system? Okay.

Glad to see Polygon continuing to be a gaming journalism eyesore.

What happens when you have a poor selling system? The games sell poorly! Who would have guessed?

Broken Joystick

At least you can talk. Who are you?
From Ben's Twitter: "Mario Kart 8 Will Be The Worst Selling Game In Kart History"
Headline title: "Mario Kart 8 likely to be the worst-selling game in its history"
Article body: "If every current Wii U owner bought the next installment, Mario Kart 8, it would still be the second-worst selling game in franchise history."

No idea about worldwide.

It was true in the UK for the first month during the PS4 launch, haven't seen any updated LTD figures since end of 2013.

It is not true in Japan, Knack sold about 392.427 on the back of being bundled in the initial shipments of PS4. Knack last charted on Famitsu on March 10-March 16 week.

Mario 3D World was at 542.177 this week according to Media Create.

Man, I don't even get paid for this, but let me try:

Attach rates for console entries, because they matter:

Super Mario Kart: 5,61:1
Mario Kart 64: 3,34:1
Mario Kart DD: 3,13:1
Mario Kart Wii: 3,01:1

(5,61+3,34+3,13+3,01)/4=3,77 is the projected attach rate. Let's say Polygon is right and there are 6.17 million Wii Us out there, MK8 should sell around 1.64 million units.
