NPD Sales Results for April 2014 [Up2: XB1/360 hardware, PS4 #1/XB1 #2 best selling]

So for all this talk about Call of Duty's demise...still holding on at number 2. Do we have any sales on how it's tracking compared to BLOPS II? I know it was less after launch, but maybe it's gaining now since Ghosts is on more platforms with the PS4 and XONE versions driving new sales.

Why is the PS4 underselling good for Sony, but the XO underselling bad for Microsoft in a known slow month?

Please explain.
Underselling? It's way past the PS3 at this point in both lifetime and first April sales, right?
It's beating out the Xbox One right? It dethroned the last-gen king on Day 1, right?

Things will only get better as these consoles become more affordable and as last-gen is finally put to rest. I say 360/PS3 will be completely dead by Holiday 2015.

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
The months of April-August are always going to be lower selling months. This isn't an issue at all. Historically, there's been very few instances of 360/PS3 exceeding 200K for April.

The uptake on next-gen consoles has far exceeded any other generation. I don't think EA or other publishers are worried about adoption at all; in fact, given that many titles are still cross-generational, I suspect that publishers are quite surprised at how much quicker the core audience has transitioned to the new generation.

360/PS3 aren't really selling anywhere close to the PS4/XB1 versions of new cross generational games.

Plus, with the early lull in software, it's not really surprising to see sales fall within historical norms after demand has been satiated.

PS4 doesn't need a price drop, it just needs more content that furthers widespread adoption. Destiny is going to be pretty huge for them, because friends will want to play with eachother online, and people stuck in last-gen will be forced to upgrade.

Someone else has seen the light!

And by light, I mean truth.

I don't think cross-gen is a major issue, the sales driver is better versions of those titles. And adoption is moving fast enough without pulling last gen support. More releases would probably help be they cross- or current-gen only.

It's not like the Japanese market for instance where there's an absence of even cross-gen and the publishers are essentially setting themselves up towards a transitional failure (again).

Just got into the thread.

Crap numbers all around for hardware, lowest month yet for both the XBO and PS4 since their respective launches.

The concern spouted by other members about the PS4 performance is somewhat justified, 199k is hardly numbers to be happy with when you're meant to be leading the race and picking up the slack of the other lower selling ones.

When the huge drop in January happened (~270k), it could be excused due to the PS4 being supply constrained. The same numbers were seen in February further lending credence to the limited supply situation (~270k) and the rise in March (~370k) brought hope that things were picking up. But now?

It is a slippery slope though. Without dedicated next gen software those devs are just adding reasons for consumers not to purchase the next hardware. Why buy a X1 for Titanfall when you can get it for 360? Why buy a PS4 for Metal Gear 5 when it is on PS3? So on and so forth.

2015 is going to be the real breakout year I think because of so much next gen only software but for now the Ps4 seems to be handling the transition the best. Sales are staying steady and the stream if titles is very steady even heading into the usual summer droughts.

That depends on how next gen consoles do this Fall. If numbers aren't that great or good that means the market has drastically changed, the ball game won't be as easy to play or predict the outcome of.

As of now these console manufacturers are depending on a few developers to entice people to make the jump, that is a scary situation no matter how you cut it.

The thing abut PS4 that is is still selling everywhere, I wouldn't say the same thing for Xbone or WiiU>

Remember how people were saying the console market is dead? Then the PS4 and Xbone launched and sold really well and we all laughed at those pessimistic idiots?

Maybe they weren't so stupid after all...
I think some of the worry was that the Wii U represented the best they could do, or at least not FAR behind. While that isn't the case, it does look plausible we'll instead instead enter a sort of scenario where we have numbers that might've been good for a less advanced generation but with budgets too high to support the install base now. Maybe it's partially the economy or partially the fact there just aren't many compelling reasons to get new hardware, but it does leave me to wonder if minimizing the cost of these consoles and selling them at a very low price ends up being the most practical route for a long, long while on consoles.
I think this is probably the best argument for cross-gen:

"-Xbox One sold 447,000 games.
-Xbox 360 sold 2.2 million games."
Yeah, now I'm really wondering whether this is because 360 having the game too disinclines people, or if people really aren't ready for next-gen on average. I think we'll see once games like Arkham Knight hit and if they can force a stronger push to next gen, we haven't had this many games be cross gen before I think, certainly not the higher end games.

It's not an issue yet, its only been 6-7 months from launch. As long as publisher realize where their audience is and let go of last-gen, this generation should be very healthy for the big publishers(and a dozen or so indies who catch lightning in a bottle).

That's a much more positive way to look at it.

Thing is, historically speaking hardware sales of 360/PS3 are already those of a dead platform. Xbone at 115k, PS4 around 200k, these are not impressive numbers relative to consoles of the past. Heck I bet Gamecube sales for it's first April were similar to these numbers.

If possible some overview of how last months big games did this month would be nice, stuff like MGS, Dark Souls, South Park they all vanished from the list.

Yeah, I'm not worried about Second Son's performance. It's not a game that had a huge team or bloated budget. It's probably already turned a profit.

Even if we were to just say it sold a million copies that would put it at $40-$50 million gross right now (take out the retailer cut), which likely means they have already turned a profit after just 9 days or very close.

Both consoles need system sellers now that the initial rush has tapered. And both consoles need feature parity with the predecessors. What we have right now isn't going to cut it for very long.

Each time that i see news about tales of zestiria i think

"are they really going to release that in the future, on ps3!? so theres not going to be a tales of game in ps4 until... ... wow"

And why even talking about persona 5. Coming to ps3 in 2015!?

Haha it's amusing to me that practically no one takes my attempt at meaningful discussion seriously unless I post a number or two to go along with it.

Priorities people!

Sales peak during the first quarter (Feb-March). Starting in April, they decline substantially and stay fairly low until September. Again, 200K in the month of April was seldom accomplished by either PS3 or 360 throughout its entire life.

Combined April sales for XB1/PS4 in April 2014 (115 + 200 = 315K) exceed those from the first April both previous gen consoles were on the market (175 + 82 = 257K), so I don't quite understand the "concern", to be honest.

Last-gen we had PS3 doing miserable out of the gate and Xbox 360 did well. What's interesting is that the fortunes of both consoles is reversed now in the US. PS4 is basically the new 360, doing really good numbers in NA. Xbox One isn't struggling as much as the PS3, but it's still doing comparatively worse. So you're looking at a situation where XB1 is doing better than PS3 did, and PS4 is managing to do better than the already successful 360 was.

Where's the cause for alarm? Things will get better now that Microsoft has dropped Kinect and lowered the price.

This. Not that it'll effect the shift to handheld in the slightest but they could atleast try to maximize what leftovers from portables they've got. Stop catch-22-ing yourselves and your Japanese consumers J-devs get out some PS4 games and maybe you'll be able to ride this cycle way longer in the relatively good "late PS3" times where Tales etc. was reportedly doing rather good (Namco/Baba's own words) rather than having to push the PS4 out of "early PS3 times in Japan" first again by getting the PS4 there at least a little earlier. You don't have to wait until Final Fantasy tries to do it for you every single generation.

Hypothetical scenario time.

I have a base of 12MM consoles I can sell on with the same development pipeline in only 6 months, with less competition than ever in the market for your dollar - what do I care how that 12mm breaks down?

Unless of course someone is hungry enough to give me money haha.

Anyway yea, if I we're a third party publisher I'm not scared till I see trends. People are freaking over one month and there weren't even any games out this month! Page me after October and let's have this chat for real.

(Also you can't include wii u in your analysis, it's a total non factor for my hypothetical pipeline and would require you to compare it to wii at this point last gen and that will not be replicated this gen, and I'm not set up to monetize against that audience anyway)

Agreed. Now with the new development of the Xbox One price cut in June, the sales trajectory of the console is up for question. It's too early to distinctly hammer down a trajectory in the USA because the console is still in its infancy and Microsoft is reacting to changes to find a healthy equilibrium.

No wonder that developers continue to cling to the old gen for the time being.

i was thinking this gen might be front-loaded by the hardcore. The ps3 and 360 are still very serviceable devices for most people.
