Rare "evaluating what they want to do next" says Phil Spencer

We're in an industry where MS produced a Killer Instinct sequel in the year 2013. At this point /anything/ is fucking possible.

Exactly. Keep this in mind too. We're in an industry where Minecraft has sold gangbusters on the Xbox. If Rare didn't slap Banjo on Nuts & Bolts and fleshed out the concept a bit more, Microsoft might have had a Minecraft of their own.

With the 399$ console, a solid looking line up, Phil Spencer seemingly taking Xbox in a better direction, I'm definitely interested in an Xbone. A next gen Viva Pinata would probably push me over the edge.

I would like Jet Force Gemini HD port from 4J Studios (they did the Banjo-Kazooie and Perfect Dark HD ports for 360) and sequel from Rare.

Jet Force Gemini lead designer Martin Wakeley has left Rare but composer Robin Beanland is still there so the sequel could be awesome (JFG development team).

Just listen to this: Jet Force Gemini 2:39:40 SPEED RUN [N64]

The soundtrack and sound effects are so good. Those goo and body part splattering sounds and screams are so satisfying when the ants get blasted.

You'd think that if anything was up Microsoft's alley, it would be the Space Marine shooter IP.

You're saying this as if Microsoft is incapable of doing this because they have to appeal to a 'demographic.'

They're not incapable, but that doesn't mean they're itching to do it anytime soon.
A semi-realistic hard core fighter appeals way more to young western men than a cartoony 2D platformer staring a bear and a bird who speak in gibberish.
:/

How to explain all those cartoony games Microsoft have been publishing recently then? Games like Max, Powerstar Golf, Project Spark, Tentacles, Twisted Pixel's output, all the avatar and Kinect games, even their partnership with Mojang? Let me guess, you haven't touched an Xbox console in years. It seems that some of you are still living in the past, Microsoft haven't been catering to just angsty young men in ages, and most of their new(-ish) studios (Twisted Pixel, Press Play, BigPark, Team Dakota, Good Science, Soho Productions, Lift London) clearly show a desire to expand their reach.

A semi-realistic hardcore /console-exclusive/ fighter that hasn't had a sequel since 1995 that's already selling itself to a small
cheap
competitive playerbase? Do you know how much fighting games sell compared to these other games the targeted demographic plays?

Banjo would get more sales than KI.

MS should just turn rare into a fanservice studio. Don't know why they were ever corralled into kinect stuff. They have too much history which MS should use to their advantage

I'm not sure RARE is even capable of making a good core game anymore, even for those that used to like their output. They are a shadow of their former self by all accounts.

Illness is the doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge, we make promise only; pain we obey.
IPs and a logo does not equal a game. Rare is a re-animated corpse of its former self. All the parts have been changed and the only thing that remains is the husk. I wish that they'd show themselves some respect and make something brand new. Something that isn't Kinect or old IPs that none of them have never had any connection to.

Small attempts at trying to capture an audience that they were planning to half serve??

Fine, they're both niche genres on MS platforms.
I still believe that a semi realistic game based around violence is a much better fit than Banjo, and would be more successful in the long run. :p

No core Rare games confirmed at E3.

They let another team do Killer Instinct. I think more and more games from old franchises they will source to different teams and not just let "Rare" make the old Rare game sequels.

If there is no Rare series at E3 I'll be pissed.

It's really strange that people keep pining for the Rare of old, considering the Rare of old has been gone for a long time.

1. Perfect Dark 2
2. Banjo Threeie
3. Jet Force Gemini 2

should be enough to keep Rare busy for a while.

Just because old Rare is mostly gone now doesn't mean the new staff aren't capable of making a good game based off an old ip. Ya never know.

Any company around as long as Rare is going to have staff changes, we're talking decades here. However the director of Tooie and his brother are still at Rare for example.

Killer Instinct turned out brilliantly and that was a totally different studio, so I have no concerns with Rare themselves handling a new Banjo or Perfect Dark.

I know it isn't the original Rare team.

But with Phil Spencer and the new Kinectless SKU coming out I have
a strong feeling they will be allowed to make a new game for a classic Rare franchise like Banjo or Perfect Dark.

A Banjo Kazooie game that's actually a Banjo Kazooie game would be nice. Knowing Rare they will probably make a Perfect Dark kart game or a Conker RTS or something.

With her British accent back as well.

I didn't get a 360 until 2007 so never played PDZ, did she not have a British accent?

A next-gen Viva Pinata or similar would sell the Xbox to me, I'm not sure the team is there nowadays that could do it justice. I would love to be proven wrong though.

Anyway its not like Rare were being mandated to make Kinect games, doubtless they'll just continue as they have the last several years despite the change.
