Mario Golf: World Tour |OT| Bring Cursing to the Fore with Mario and Friends!

I finally got it back on the fairway and then the ball dropped behind one of the posts holding the Koopa balloon after getting the coin :'{

If you want to try something different, what I did was this: just hit the ball onto the fairway on the right where the hill is, make sure it stays in the fairway. Then use the shroom and a 9I to just hit it normally, you should be able to reach the coin with just a normal shroom shot if you positioned yourself correctly (at least I was able to just now with Star Peach).

Hey guys. Where do I find "Challenge Mode" to get all these badges I'm reading about?

Check the FAQ in the op, but it's in the Mario Golf (quick play) single player mode~

Protip: Always have mulligans on hand. Always. If a challenge is taking you a while then enable them because digital coins are worth nothing compared to your sanity. :p

EDIT: Or what Jascii said

Thanks everyone but I finally got it completely by luck because one of the bushes stopped the mushroom boost in the perfect location on the fairway.

I haven't bought any Mulligans yet but I may before trying that 18 hole one put challenge :/
After some experimentation, you need to use that thwomp to your advantage. If you shoot an 7 iron or so straight at it (from around where you get the note blocks at least), the position of the note block will change so that your shot won't hit it and go over it, and conveniently also give you enough height to get the coin!
OK, that's what I remember happening but I didn't realize it was critical to the strategy.

Speaking of stumped, hints for the first Star Coin challenge on Bowser's course would be appreciated. After getting the note block (don't see how you'd do it without it), I can't get the height for the coin, and spending a shot to get some distance nets me the coin on shot 3, bu makest the subsequent (final) shot very difficult.

I used the note block to get it with the 2nd shot but it's been so many days I can't remember how. Have you tried every shot/distance combo to get the extra height? Or maybe you're not getting close enough on your initial drive for some reason.

I can't do it. :( I mean, clearly you have to use the thwomp, as otherwise you don't get the height, but I really can't do it. If I hit the front of the thwomp, the ball just bounces off (the coin is next to the thwomp, though). Hitting the top of thwomp would maybe do it, but I don't know how/from where I would reach that (the ball either goes over the thwomp or hits the front). Hitting the side is hard as you'd have to get to the left of the thwomp, but since you need the item, you're usually either right in front it or maybe on the left edge, but not in an angle you'd want.

It's weird how the challenges are either a) laughably easy or b) obnoxious Star Coin challenges.

Edit: Did it on my first try after posting this. Never. Again. Don't even know how it happened, the curve showed something else entirely.

Hmmm I don't know quite how to explain I guess... let me try again.

When you shoot a shot using the note block item, the game will position the note block in what it thinks is the best place to give you the most distance on your shot. It will, however, try to avoid any obstacles. So if you shoot your shot so that it would hit the thwomp from the front, it will put a note block in front of the thwomp, your ball will hit the note block and go over it. This lets you get the extra height you need to get the star coin.

I made a video trying to illustrate the point, will upload if you haven't gotten the star coin by that time!

Edit: OK, awesome! It took me a few tries to get it so that I even had the opportunity to see how to get the coin, so you may just have been in a bad position before, too! I guess you guys don't get to see my blurry explanation video after all~

Thanks, Jasc, I think that's exactly what happened (note block appearing before the obstacle). Sorry that you had to go through the trouble of recording it, I appreciate it! :)

Got my first world gold and beat the 18 holes 1 on 1 in. It's been a good day.

What do you mean "world gold"? Is that getting all eagles or better on a given course?

Personally just finished all 120 Star Coin and all 120 Moon Coin challenges. The Moon Coin for getting the back nine of the one-on, one-in challenge was brutal. Just the 18 hole version and the challenges given out by the Toads in Castle Club left and then I'm good until the DLC.

I didn't realize that it was a range, I assumed that you had to post the lowest score or tie to get gold. I was wondering how often people were getting those :lol
Top 10% get Gold

Next 20% get Silver

Next 30% get Bronze

So top 60% for trophy, and getting a trophy in Americas Tournament 1 or 2 or World Tournament 1, 2, or 3 qualifies you for the first Major.

Nice, now that I got all 120 star coins I might start on that instead of tackling these moon coin challenges.

Ugh, I could not take advantage of any of the par 5s in that world tournament. So frustrating that I made it to the green in three on almost all of them and kept having to settle for pars :/

Coin rush tourneys on my favorite course this week.

Got a -7 first try with Luigi.

Game is still really fun in short bursts just doing tourneys.

By far the worst part is checking results for all these tourneys though. I'm in a ton of private ones with friends from other places and then if I'm in GAF tourneys and then the regular Nintendo tourneys it's like 7 or 8 results to check every week.

Does anyone know if there's a way to clear data on a physical copy of World Tour? I let my friend play my new copy of the game and I want to get rid of his progress so I can set my own handicap/go through the tutorials etc.

Hope I'm not too LTTP for GAF tournies... some of these scores are ridiculous.

To delete: Hold XYAB when starting up.

For tourneys, the big ones are Robin's and the GAF Tour.

So you can sabotage your handicap by just giving up on every hole in a tournament a lot of times.

What made us think you couldn't lower your handicap is that the game is programmed to prevent a few bad rounds from killing your handicap. You'll have to do multiple shitty rounds for it to start dropping, and then the pace will pick up drastically.

Is there a generally recognised 'best' character? I quite like star daisy but her hook/slice can be frustrating. Any others? I've been trying to get my Mii up there too, but hit a bit of a flat spot where my outfits aren't getting me much improvement

Oh my god having to watch all the tournament ceremonies to get your payout is so incredibly tedious. Is there a faster way to do it?

Well if it helps you can skip to the end once they begin. It doesn't help get rid of all the loading screens though. Probably best to do it when you have no intention of playing. Just check it every so often and mash A or start to skip.

Anyone want to play in the NeoGaf community? I'm in the lobby now.

*edit* Thanks for the game.

I didn't actually expect to find anyone in there lol. Good game.

If you play perfectly, Bowser is the best character.

For practical (read: sane) purposes, apparently Mario is the best one.

Cheaters have invaded the handicap tournament leaderboard, that's it, I'm increasing my handicap.
I'm ok for letting bad players win but just go look at that leaderboard to understand... >.<

On a better note, I'm actually 3rd in the GAF hard tournament!
Yeah I know, that won't last long :p

How do people with a 9.0 handicap end up with a -30 net score.

I'm a 9.0 handicap and ended up with a -3.0 net score. I'd have to shoot an 18 hole round of about 30 to shoot that low.

Hmm...
So... I kept forfeiting/giving up holes so my handicap would get higher, until I got 10.6, then I said to myself, let's win a tournament, right, so it will decrease...
But I ended up with 20.7 0_o
Alright, let's do the medium handicap tournament!
...
...
Did -22... My best score ever... And I f*cked up the last hole, could have got -23...

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
So I hope we end up getting that 2nd round of DLC this week. Need to give it some breathing room for me to play it before MK hits the following week.

Anyone else getting the 018-0512 error code when Quick Searching for community matches?

Happens to me every single time, and very frustrating since I end up waiting 10+ min in a lobby to get a round going with 4 people playing.

Edit: Also, I wish there were an in-lobby option to say something like "Will wait for 4 players" or "Will be leaving after 30 seconds" or something along those lines. I feel like I get 2 or 3 people in a lobby and then while waiting for a fourth one person will back out and then the other one will follow. I wish people would just wait!

It would have been nice to have any kind of chat system in the lobby.

Or something like having a start timer would have sufficed.

How does this game compare to Mario Golf on Gamecube? Is it different enough, or just more of the same?

I'd say very similar but so far I hate how hard it is to power up your Mii character. I loved how the GBA version allowed you to create a ridiculously powerful character that you imported into the GCN version. Just the thought of insanely powered Mii characters battling it out online has me drooling.

I'd still say it's different enough at the same time. Loving it.

Really? I actually liked that Miis are really balanced characters. I initially thought that the clothes you can buy would make the Miis OP compared to the rest of the cast and would make playing as the Mario characters useless. I was pleasantly surprised.

Speaking of OP Miis, any "perfect" builds out there? By that I mean max distance, but still practical.

I'm at 136m with decent sweet spot/control. Wish they were a little better, though, honestly. My timing can't always be impeccable, so I need some leeway.

Edit: I meant _2_36m, of course.

You usually either go for a 248 to 250Y drive with a straight shot or you go all-in on power. So it's either control and consistency or power. Not much good stuff in-between, really.
Yeah.

Are people really tanking their handicap to do better at this tourney?
Not at first, but now that we know how... of course people are doing it. For a lot of us we would have to get like a -25 or something dumb like that to get a gold medal without sabotaging our handicap.

I understand what you're saying as it balances the game. I mean it in a selfish way. :lol

Hm, that's probably a sensible way to handle it. Not much fun from a "selfish" perspective, though, as cube puts it, haha.

I don't have that much more to unlock, so I hope I can mix and match something together soon that's maybe around 232m with some more control than I have now.

Oh, that's good to know. Don't have everything unlocked (do on the right side, but the left side is maybe 30-40% unlocked), but have ~240Y, straight, with tons of sweet spot and control. Probably don't need as much sweet spot or control, but I don't want to hamstring myself if I'm stuck in a bunker or something and need to get out without having to be *perfect* on the shot.

Well, I might as well also point out that guys going for the absolute #1 spot seem to be going the all-power route. The straight shooting route is the better one for getting a solid gold in as few tries as possible, though.
