NFC confirmed for Smash Bros for Wii U

As a kid everyone knew and owned Smash Bros. Melee. The oldest one being around ten. Though things have changed over the years it is still very much a big game for children.

I suppose. It's just interesting that Smash Brothers is a T rated game while Skylanders and Disney Infinity are rated E.

I really hope this is only for vanity items like trophies or something and not gameplay connected. There's no way in hell I'm buying little Nintendo toys.

God, i really need to play my copy. It's still shrink wrapped. Been trying to finish DS2, but it's taking forever.

Maybe vintage toys, but I would think something like this would be mostly bought by children.

These NFC devices aren't toys with moveable parts.
They're figurines.

Something like that would mostly be bought by teens/adults for themselves or for their children to use.

I've actually wanted figure versions of Smash Bros. trophies since before Brawl, so I'd be all over this, depending on how they're used. High quality and relatively cheap Nintendo figurines? I'd buy them even if they didn't have extra content.

Probably this. But also: use your "Charizard" (with its stats or experience or whatever) in future Nintendo Wii U (and 3DS) games too. So for example, Pokken.

Yeah cuz smash and pokken will have a standardized exp and stat system (wut?)

Yeah, i really doubt it. Other games might be able to pick up that you USED the figure on smash bros, and maybe unlock rewards that way? NFC can read and write, correct?

Money at the ready for Lucina and Palutena figures.

She's already leaked to be playable.

I honestly can't see the figures being used for anything other than DLC character distribution or unlocking trophies. It won't be used to unlock characters that are already in the game.

Smart business decision.

On the other hand, as a consumer, RIP my wallet.

I'm also confused as to why people are so glad about this.
If it's not necessary to play as certain characters or vital to the game, then that's fine, but I have no desire to have a SSB skinned Skylander's game.

It is official that figures will be cross games. That was just an example. Plus we dont even know if pokken dxist..if so, the name suggest namco as developer..

because it is unlikely that smash will turn into skylander..it was also statee clearly in the iwata interview

I'm happy to see Nintendo is serious about their NFP initiative by making Smash Bros. a part of it. Hopefully many more games will follow.

Smash brothers is nintendo's Avengers, which will lead them into whatever their 'Guardians of the Galaxy' is, where some people only buy it because they like the avengers/already bought the NFC figures for smash.

I can't speak to the quality of the Skylanders figures, but I know that $20 when you're looking for a figure that isn't puke worthy is dirt cheap.
I'd say if these things are $20, $25, and are at least on par with the $20 figures I have, I'll buy em all.
Action figures with high articulation and great detail perhaps.

20 bucks for a tiny statue is highway robbery.

Were we not told at one point that the toys would be usable between multiple games? So, it's not like whatever these are, they're only going to be for one game.

Someone will be pissed at this news. Let's see who it will be.

Chiming in.

I like playing video games. In particular, ones that are released as complete products, where I don't have to buy additional shit to get the full game experience.

I don't like buying DLC and I especially don't like collecting figurines. (I have nothing against people who do.)

Yeah. NFC will be cross game. Essentially its own platform. I won't be surprised if you can unlock trophies, assists, costumes etc. if you have data from other games stored on the figure.

I don't understand this line of thinking. Where did Nintendo imply that the Smash Bros roster will be unlocked via a figurine model? Nowhere.

Nintendo as per Investors Meeting:

The figurines, which consumers can buy and collect, are going to work with multiple software titles to be released in the future, and we are aiming to develop more software titles compatible with the figurines. You will be able to customize your NFP to raise or train your own Nintendo characters, for example.

Nintendo is implying that these figurines will be used as saved points data, customizable move sets, and so forth.

The figurines are an extra feature being implemented. It is not necessary to purchase the figurines in order to enjoy Smash Bros.

Yup

Example would be a mario figure:

Used with smash bros: Save custom moveset, unlock trophy
Used with Miyamoto's NFP (non-mario) Game: Unlock mario as playable
Used with pokken fighters: Unlock a mario hat for pikachu
Used with Mario 3D world 2: Store powerups on the NFC figure so you can use them later when you need them
Used with hyrule warriors: *This NFC figure is not compatible with Hyrule Warriors*

Etc

You could have a link NFP figure give you 100 rupees in the next zelda if you use it
You can choose what games support what nfp figures

Who knows what they'll use them for. They're basically pretty looking memory cards with a bit of information that says 'i'm a mario shaped memory card.' The game looks at it and says 'Do I like mario shaped memory cards? Yes? Ok, let me do this mario thing then.' or 'Nope, I'm a zelda game, i don't want a mario NFP figure.'

If it means characters will be locked out without figurines, or some other elements of the game require me to buy figurines, then yes, I'll be pissed about that. Is there a reason that shouldn't piss people off?

That's not being pissed at THIS news, that's being pissed at something which MAY happen.

We have no idea how they will be used. From what we already know, it's likely for storing player data.

Question regarding the NFC tech - is it locked to a particular console, Nintendo id (yeah right), or are these share-able - ie can I buy an ultra rare figurine and pass it around GAF? I'm guessing you can't share but how are they tied to a gamer?

Yeah, this is how I kinda saw it as well. Maybe it could also save some data on it where if you play 10 matches as Mario with the Mario figuring activated it would "unlock" the figurine to then give items to the other games. Kinda like avatar achievements from Xbox.

I'm assuming it has its own protocol. If other consoles know how to read the protocol, then sure, they can use them. It's very likely that nintendo makes the protocols proprietary, so it'll take some decrypting or something in order to interact with them. I'm no expert on the tech, so it's just my guess.

There are three games I want coming out this year. Wii U has been such a disaster that I don't even expect them to announce anything good at E3. All Nintendo had to do was not fuck up the games that I already wanted. They couldn't even do that.

Actual human translation:
Question: The Wii U has suffered a lack of games over the past year, with releases being quite spaced out from one another. The beginning of 2014 has similarly been calm; what will release after Mario Kart 8?

Answer, from Nintendo France's Stephan Bole: Lots of games will have their release details made official at E3, but you already know that we'll be releasing the action game Bayonetta 2. From now until the end of the year, there'll also be new Skylanders, new Disney Infinity, Sonic Boom, Watch Dogs, or Zelda Hyrule Warriors. And in terms of games produced by Nintendo, there'll obviously be Super Smash Bros. E3 will also be the occasion to show how the NFC technology (technology used in Skylanders and Disney Infinity, which allows one to use real objects -- here, figurines -- in video games) will work in Nintendo consoles. Super Smash Bros Wii U version will use NFC.

If it was any other game, I'd expect a disaster. But cards in Kid Icarus Uprising have proved to me that Sakurai can do this without fucking up the game.

Still confirms NFC for smash. Thread still valid, despite the minor slip up.

Gonna buy a Yoshi figure.

Gonna buy a Rosalina figure.

Gonna buy a Captain Falcon figure

Repeat for over half of the remaining roster

I like physical things? I don't buy everything day one and if one or two figures look to become rare I'll pick those up sooner rather than later. It's fun.

There's no reason to ruin a digital game with plastic crap though. If you like buying physical stuff that you'll throw away by age 30, what does that have to do with video games?

It's completely arbitrary to the game, and the only reason to tie it to Smash is to get people who want to play the digital game to buy the dolls. If the dolls were worth it on their own merit, they wouldn't need to tie it to the game.

So only the WiiU version uses it.
That should aleviate fears that you need them to unlock charactera or anything.

From my understanding, Stump is saying don't make a thread/post based on an iffy translation. In this case the translation worked out okay, but it may have not. He is basically saying don't do it in the future.

There was no chance of it being required to unlock significant content like characters, stages, and etc.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
New characters would be shitty for the competitive scene. Having to spend money on character figurines just to have every character in the game for tournaments would be a travesty. Also, Sakurai has already gone on record saying that the character roster would be the same for both the 3DS and Wii U version so the chances of NFC actually giving you new characters are slim to none.

At most it'll be for trophies, at least I hope so.

But I don't buy this as fact yet anyway. It wouldn't be the first time a subsidiary of a company says one thing but it's actually wrong.

I could not care less about "the competitive scene."
