Did Resistance 3 take some notes from Half Life: Raising the Bar?

Loved all of the Resistance series especially the lore and even R2 because its MP/Coop was great....except how they decided to end the series, which ruined it all for me.

Don't want to get into another Insomniac rant about some of my favorite games, so I'll keep it brief and with minimal spoilers:
All of those hints throughout the lore, that amazing R2 ending
(even with who they killed off)
, so many pieces of collectables hinting at
a massive alien world to be explored
and more.... only to be completely thrown out of the window with how R3 ended.

The
"happy"
ending they went was just a cop out to not make another game in the series in my opinion. I guess it didn't help that the marketing/SCE were throwing the game under the bus especially since it had the first online pass for SCE.

Edit: Just realized that what I said above is not exactly HL2 related (unless you think of how Resistance reached its third game and HL didn't yet I guess)

You're not crazy, OP. There are a lot of similarities between the two games and Yahtzee made mention of them in his R3 Zero Punctuation episode.

Resistance 3 has the best single player fps campaign on ps3 and everyone should check it out. Sony should really put it on psn i have no idea why it's not up there yet

Sounds like I need to get a copy of R3 as soon as...

I loved R1 but disliked R2.

I wouldn't call R2 a 'bad' game, but it was just so incredibly different that you have to wonder why on earth they made some of the decisions they did.

Never got around to R3 because I thought it would be more of the same of R2 and I was away from home when it came out so it dropped off my radar completely.

I skipped Resistance 3 because of 2 which felt like it was influenced by the modern day shooter to it's detriment (enjoyed the co-op), the first Resistance felt like Ratchet and Clank-ish with specific enemies going down easier with specific weapons and a WEAPON wheel.

The first 2 Resistance's have slowly made their way on the PS Store so I may pick up R3 when that pops up eventually, because the amount of praise it gets even now comes as a surprise to me tbh.

Resistance 3 is one of the most underappreciated gems of last gen, stunning graphics and art style, fun gameplay and game mechanics that resembled old school early 2000 shooters. It really felt out of place and refreshing during a time of CoD and BF domination. A shame the series never got popular.

I'd happily buy a remaster.

So much wasted potential. Insomiac didn't know what the hell they wanted to do with Resistance. Complete lack of focus and direction.

Resistance 1 is still by far the best resistance.

Resistance 1 was bland as hell, only got recognition due to being a launch title. 3 was far and away the superior game.

Resistance 3 remastered would be a day one purchase for me. Game was amazing in every facet besides the blurry sub resolution.

R3 was so underrated and unloved it breaks my heart, this is a legit good game and one of very few shooters with a good SP, Awesome weapons and decent MP

What a shame, it had more potential than Killzone

Tried to play Resistance 1 for a second time last month but the stench of generic cliches and blandness stopped me a few levels in.

R3 however I started and finished not long afterwards. Whilst it doesn't aim to do anything particularly bold or new in most areas, it was a fun and enjoyable campaign, and a brooding sense of atmosphere was apparent throughout. One of very few FPS campaigns where I actively made use of the entire arsenal of weapons too.

It's a damn shame the online was killed after less than three years.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Loved every single thing about Resistance 3. I have played it multiple times.

Can't believe it came from Insomniac Games.

While I agree with the sentiment, I would rephrase the last line to "Can't believe its a part of the Resistance franchise".

The quality is far beyond the first two games.

slightly off topic, do i need to play the first two games before playing resistance 3? i bought the game but havnt played it yet and the first two just dont look appealing to me, how vital is it to the story + is everything explained properly in resistance 3

I actually never minded Resistance 3's blurriness. Maybe that's because I'm a little nearsighted in real life, and I tend to wear glasses only when watching tv/playing games, driving, or taking notes.

I played this game in co-op and got the Platinum. I *totally* love this game, one of the best FPS campaign of the last gen.

I've never played the first 2 and had no problem following the story.

Always loved the Resistance series, 1, 2 and 3, for its weapons, gameplay and humans vs chimera story.. never understood why it got so hated back then .... and loved right now =)

Most ppl seem to hate 2 , but i loved it, the grand settings (huge chimera in the city) even the multiplayer (which i really loved even though it was like co-op)

But after FUSE i really hope insomniac gets it stuff together with Sunset Overdrive, even though i dont have an xbox1 nor plan to buy one, FUSE made me think insomniac lost all that made their games great and fun..

Resistance 3 is probably the most under-appreciated PS3 exclusive. Shame Insomniac doesn't want to continue the series. They had finally found the sweet spot.

So right.

Sad that it took three games to do it, and by that point, it seems Resistance lost its steam. Thought it also came out at a busy time.

I wasn't completely into Resistance until Resistance 3.

R3's single player run was just so fun, and the guns were incredibly diverse. Situations confronted gave freedom in terms of how you approached killing enemies, which was so refreshing. Of course, the health model was perfect.

I'm sad that we may not see shooters like it for a while. Games like Killzone continues to get better attention, but that game's single player has flopped twice.

As burnt out as I am on shooters, Resistance 3 was different. I'm unaware of Half Life's cues, because I haven't played Half Life, but if that's what the game's inspiration comes from, I want more of it.

Why, Why.... I just got over the fact that Insomniac no longer wants to make these games for Sony. I just really hope Sony can give the IP to Bend or someone capable to make a proper extension of the franchise. R3 was a really great step forward in SP gameplay, and as I've said before, now they need to take it to the Chimera homeland...... Perfect PS4 title...

i just remember not being able to jump over two foot ledges, because they represented arbitrary cutoff points.
So just like 99% of linear FPS SP titles then?

I mean what of you expect? The map stops somewhere. Only other option is open world Crysis / Far Cry which is a different beast and would ruin the heavy narrative flow of something like R3.

Resistance 3 was fantastic. I couldn't get into the first or second one, so I was pleased with Resistance 3 when I played it. I recall at the time playing a lot of FPS titles and getting a bit bored with them, and this one stuck out.

i dunno, i just played Wolfenstein 2009, and they never limited the maps really.

it was over the top in Resistance 3 to where i would see the cutoff point by visual cues, and know full well, id be unable to turn back and search for ammo, or diary entries, or whatever.

or an even worse pet peev still, is being at a crossroads, choosing the wrong way, and being screwed out of collectibles. the game itself was a decent blend of R1, and R2, with more of the former, but overall this is one of the most dull FPS series i've played.

R3 is HL2 with better gunplay

madness.

As far as single player campaigns go Resistance 3 was the best of the series by far.

agree.

I don't understand the love people have for R1, is it the multiplayer that I never touched? The single player was just bland. Loved R3.

Any chance we'll see a PS4 re-release of this? If not I'll probably just buy it right now. I've heard good things about it, but never picked it up simply because I thought the 1st and 2nd were downright average at best.

On the second level of Resistance 3 my 60gb PS3 got the YLOD. It also crapped out a friends 80gb model. I kept the game but haven't touched it since.

It took notes from crysis as well. You fight cloaked enemies in a forest area. Of course it wasnt as good though...

Game was a mash of crysis, half life, metro and some others

I love the Resistance series, even 2, which I think is under-appreciated. It had a long, diverse, interesting campaign, and an awesome ending. The 8 player co-op is some of the best I've ever played.

Resistance 3 just continues the trend of quality sp. Overall, I think the entire series is underrated, as is Insomniac in general. They just make fun games. I'd have loved to see Resistance on PS4.

Nearing the end....I dont know how they do it, but you really do use your entire arsenal......yes the arsenal is far and above HL2 and just about any game ever....so well done...and gun leveling is so much fun

R2 sold best because R1 was great. R3 sold worst because R2 wasn't good.

Huh? I thought Resistance: FoM was the biggest seller in the series, with over 4.5 million sales. Last I read Resistance 2 was around 2.5 million sales, and Resistance 3's sales were plain dire.

So much wasted potential. Insomiac didn't know what the hell they wanted to do with Resistance. Complete lack of focus and direction.

I definitely agree with this. It was such a confused mess; each iteration with a different tone, redesigned art or elements and very different gameplay aspects. It's a shame, because they had hit a nice balance with Resistance 3, and I would have liked another game to follow on with the story.

I wanted to play this but it came at the wrong time and when Insomniac were using this wretched engine. I hope they just remaster all the resistance titles for PS4. Seriously, they deserve it. The PS3 could not handle those games properly and Insomniac's engine was terrible for IQ.

The Resistance games were all pretty ugly, which is even more befuddling considering how pretty the Ratchet & Clank games were. A Crack in Time is one of the nicest-looking games of last gen.

I just played R3 for the first time last week. Really good game and it's kind of a shame that the series is dead now. R1 and R3 are both among the best console shooters.

That alone will get me to do a ng+ since I didn't even get to level out half of my guns. I ended up loving the mutator and marksman. I also liked the shotty; it had a BioShock vibe going on.

That would explain why I didn't like Resistance 3 at all (apart from the Widowmaker stampede, that is an awesome scene). I enjoy Resistance 2 a lot more.

I disagree, FUSE is a fun game and a fun coop experience. Nothing mindblowing but it's a solid game. The reaction on GAF towards that game and the hate piled on was fucking embarrassing Resistance 2 however is fucking terrible and a real piece of shit. Not just a bad game but one of the worst FPS from last gen full stop.

Resistance 3 is without a doubt the best Resistance game and a major turnaround from Resistance 2 as well. Yeah it riffs on Half Life 2 majorly but in a great way, I really enjoyed my time with that game. Might play it again someday.

I think I am the only gamer on the planet that liked R2 and didnt see it as a complete piece of dung. I mean the first and third are definitely superior, but i still liked 2

I liked R2 as well. It's clearly the black sheep of the series, but it's a fun shooter with a fast pace and some cool level design. It tried a bit too hard to be Halo crossed with COD, the mechanics are definitely a step back which made it feel shallower and it's not as good as the other two, but I find the hate for it crazily over the top.

I like R3 initially, but later on I realized it just wasn't a memorable game. I feel that everything was average about it. The HL2 influence was very strong too. I'm glad they moved on to something else, because they're just not good at making fps games

Nope! See my above comment. Resistance 2 is criminally under-appreciated here on this board and elsewhere.

I thought the story, level design, visuals, and gameplay was very good. That sequence where Hale is going through the pitch black hotel with only his flashlight lighting the way, grims everywhere; some of the scariest, most tense shit I've played in a game that wasn't a survival horror game. R2 gets a lot of shit, but its campaign was still infinitely better than the vast majority of other FPS single player campaigns out there. The 8 player co-op was incredible as well, and if Resistance 3 had it, R3 would be the best FPS of last generation in my opinion. I was absolutely addicted to the R2 co-op. I rocked the Medic the vast majority of the time. I was so disappointed that Resistance 3 didn't bring it back. It's the main reason why I held off on buying R3 for as long as I did. I finally picked it up last year on sale from Amazon, and had a great time with it. Never touched the MP, though.

Resistance 2 is my favorite in the series. R3 may be a better made game but I prefer 2's art style, scale, and lore. Along with the awesome coop mode.

The ending to Resistance 2 was also excellent. I mean, I didn't think much of the story overall, but I thought it was
very brave for killing off the protagonist in the final shot
. Although Hale was forgettable overall and they did a terrible job of introducing Capelli
considering he was the protagonist of R3
. He was so
different in that he may as well have been a completely different character
.
